Smack2k Posted October 8, 2013 Report Posted October 8, 2013 Thought about this last night while falling asleep.. What are some of the best matches where a Tag wrestler before, who primarily works tags, is in a singles match? Not guys that joined tag teams once they were already really established as singles workers. Some of my best that I can think of off the top of my head: Bret vs. Steamboat in '86 - Maple Leaf Gardens was great Shawn vs. Perfect in '91 - WM VII Stars and Stripes Forever Shawn vs. Flair in '91 - On Invasion 92 and really happens days before they break up What else? JerryvonKramer Posted October 8, 2013 Report Posted October 8, 2013 Morton - Flair of course. Eaton - Flair in 90. Did Haku have a singles matches as an Islander? Quote
Smack2k Posted October 8, 2013 Author Report Posted October 8, 2013 Haku was a singles wrestler in some high profile stuff before he joined the Islanders...so I wouldnt toss him in here... Quote
Grimmas Posted October 8, 2013 Report Posted October 8, 2013 I love Savage-Hart from SNME in 87. Quote
JerryvonKramer Posted October 8, 2013 Report Posted October 8, 2013 Both Bret and Shawn had matches with DiBiase as tag guys. Come to think of it, both of those matches would probably make "Ted's Top 10 Matches in WWF" if such a list were made. Quote
Superstar Sleeze Posted October 8, 2013 Report Posted October 8, 2013 RICK MARTEL vs. TAMA!!! MSG 7/87 Quote
peachchaos Posted October 8, 2013 Report Posted October 8, 2013 I always dig when two teams are feuding and split off into singles against each other for a night. Bulldogs-Foundation comes to mind, with Bret and Dynamite having that show-stealer at the Capp Centre. I know the feud and Dynamite in general have fallen out of favor among these ranks, but its still gold to me. The Flair-Morton Cage Match from '86 seems pretty obvious, too. Quote

The issue with those Hart split ups was that the Neidhart singles matches were usually terrible. There's a good Bret-Brunzell match from Maple Leaf Gardens in '86. Quote
Superstar Sleeze Posted October 8, 2013 Report Posted October 8, 2013 You cant really go wrong with Bret. '86 Steamboat, '87 Savage, '89 Perfect, '89 DiBiase, '89 Martel and those are just the ones I would rate as great. Bret is so much better as a singles wrestler. I don't get why his tag matches came off as so cold and mechanical. Flair/Eaton from 01/90 is so freakin' good. Makes me so disappointed in the '91 match, but different dynamics. Eaton was better as a heel. Shawn's big three singles matches are weird (DiBiase, Perfect, Flair). He has clearly progressed as worker as time goes on, but the matches themselves get worse and worse. Valentine/Davey Boy MSG '86 is pretty good also. Quote
khawk20 Posted October 8, 2013 Report Posted October 8, 2013 Bret vs. Steamboat in '86 - Maple Leaf Gardens was great psst....Boston Garden, not Toronto Quote

MSG 7/87 Yes...this whole series I have become a HUGE fan of since your write-ups...I dug through my stuff and found most of it....great stuff.....horribly underrated and not talked about feud. Martel-Tama and Bret-Steamboat are two of my favourite matches. Quote
Loss Posted October 9, 2013 Report Posted October 9, 2013 Pretty much everything in the Ric Flair vs Ricky Morton feud of 1986 gets my pick, but Flair vs Eaton in 1990 is another good pick. I know those have been mentioned, but those are my picks. Quote
Dylan Waco Posted October 9, 2013 Report Posted October 9, 2013 Ricky Morton and Al Snow had an excellent match on SMW tv in 95. OF course that's tough because it's well into Morton's career (basically the end of him being relevant actually), but Snow was getting over as a tag worker at that point and this was the first one not already mentioned that came to mind. Quote
Kil Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 I'm not sure if it's a "great" match, but one that comes to mind for me is the Raw match where Bret randomly defended the title against one of the Headshrinkers. Quote
shoe Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 Morton - Flair of course. Eaton - Flair in 90. Did Haku have a singles matches as an Islander? Eaton and Flair also have a good one in 89. Quote
shoe Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 Barry Windham vs. Bobby Fulton from 89. Quote
Boon Posted October 11, 2013 Report Posted October 11, 2013 Morton - Flair of course. Eaton - Flair in 90. Did Haku have a singles matches as an Islander? Eaton and Flair also have a good one in 89. There were two matches from late 89 early 90 that were very good intact before Flairs heel turn.... Quote

I haven't seen a whole lot of talk about it. It's like one of those Windham specials he had with Regal, and Scorpio where he makes the lesser positioned wrestler look like a star. Quote
