Most Surprising / You didnt expect WM Finish

With Taker losing to Brock in what I think is a "holy shit, I never saw that comnig" moment, it made me think, what is your most surprising finish to a WM Match that really shocked you in a "I can believe he won" kind of way? Most matches anymore you can pretty much tell who is gonna win from things that happen before the big matches, but there are exceptions. WM though, recently, hasnt had many of those exceptions. So what is yours?

Mine:

Eddie Guerrero vs. Kurt Angle - Wrestlemania 20 - Eddie's win at No Way Out over Brock was truly shocking to me, but by the time Mania came around, the reports that Brock was leaving were out and made me think Eddie was a quick 1 month kind of "Thank You" Champion. So when Mania came around, I was sure Kurt would win and be the new main guy on Smackdown carrying the title. When Eddie slipped out of his boot and small packaged a charging Kurt for the win, I was as shocked as Kurt was....

Hunter winning at WM 2000. In retrospect it doesn't seem shocking, but it was literally the first time ever that Wrestlemania ended with a heel victory. To this day, they haven't done it again besides the Austin heel turn at 17 that was treated as a babyface victory by the live crowd.

John Cena beating JBL at Wrestlemania 21. It was his first title win, he'd been built up as the new star of the company, JBL had been champion for what seemed like forever. You expected a payoff of a dramatic match and an emphatic finish. They worked a dull, remarkable match that could have aired on Smackdown without appearing special, and then after ten minutes he hits one FU and it's over, to pretty much silence and bemusement in the audience. I was watching it with about four people and then general reaction was 'WTF??' when the three was counted, a bit like Lesnar/Taker when it takes a while to process because it was so unexpected it would be over so soon. We envisaged the match would start to pick up, there would be some near falls and Cena would win. Should have been a historic moment for Cena that they could replay over and over and instead it fell really flat.

Very strange match and finish, can only imagine they were constrained for time after Angle & HBK went half an hour and HHH/Batista wanted the drawn out bloody epic in the main event.

Eddie going over Angle was obvious.

I never expected Brock-Taker, HHH retaining at 2000 and Rock over Cena like others have said. I thought for sure Chris Jericho was going over Shawn Michaels and was livid when he lost.

I never thought in a million years Evolution was going over Rock-n-Sock.

Well, don't forget, The Miz beat Cena at WrestleMania a few years back.

Mine: Undertaker beating Triple H at WM17. This was before "the streak" was really a thing, and H was on fire at that point.

Certainly not a shock on the level of Taker/Brock this year, but I was surprised.

Christian beating Jericho and turning heel with Trish was another unexpected moment for me.

Oh crap you're right. I really did block that one out of my mind.

The WM2000 main event is probably near the top--honestly neck-and-neck or only closely behind the Streakbuster.

Aside from that, for me...oddly enough, I was totally blindsided by Doink beating Crush. I wasn't an insider yet and thought Doink was going to be a territory-style "come in for a program and leave" character, and that he'd be gone or repackaged after Crush squashed him. I also was starting to think Crush was on his way to taking on an Ultimate Warrior-in-1989 heir-to-the-throne role. I didn't realize the WWF had bigger plans for Doink.

Honky over Jake is a good one. I was more upset by Danny Davis & the Hart Foundation winning the 6-man, though. I had similar thoughts about Davis than I had later on about Doink.

Was Austin's heel turn at 17 expected? I was totally shocked as an 11 year old mark, but I had already started reading some rumor sites online, getting hip to the lingo. Remember the reports that Benoit was being turned face after NWO. But I don't recall hearing anything about an Austin heel turn and never imagined it would happen at that moment.

Honky over Jake is a GREAT choice...I dont anyone saw it coming and in such a strange quick manner

What about Owen over Bret? Did anyone get shocked over that? I was out of wrestling from 94-95 so didnt see it live, so cannot comment.

As I recall the buzz was one of them was going heel, most likely Austin. IRC Austin was somewhat flat when he came back from the neck injury. He still quite rusty and his character wasn't getting the pops that he had in 98/99. He also lost to HHH in the three stages of hell match which didn't help. The run up to WM X-7 he started heating up in feud with the Rock. He started acting heelish towards the Rock which had the opposite effect of getting him more over as a face. It also had a lot to do with the Rock getting stale as a face as well something that kept happening in the rest 01 and really until he turned in 02.

What about Edge beating Alberto Del Rio? Not only was I sure that Del Rio would win, the booking made no sense and I think this loss is why Del Rio has floundered as a main event heel. When a guy is built up for months by talking about how it's his destiny to win the title and loses in his first chance, it would seem hard to find a good direction for him after that.
