Your fondest Survivor Series memory (1987-1999)?

For the next two weeks on the podcast we'll be looking at the history of the Survivor Series PPV, analysing its struggle for identity and relevance from the beginning, going show by show, and as always we're looking for your thoughts on the former Thanksgiving Ever Tradition.

Question is fairly simple - what is your favourite Survivor Series memory between 1987 and 1999?

It can be a great match, moment, promo, anything - the more detail the better. As usual, the best contributions will be read on the show and you'll be credited accordingly. So whaddya think?

EDIT - The show discussing Survivor Series from 1987 to 1999 and your fondest memories is now online and available to listen to at the following link: http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean.com/mf/web/8t4upi/SCGRadio59-HistoryoftheSurvivorSeriesPart1.mp3

The 5 tag-team match from the second Series is a long time favourite. I watched it at a friend's house in early 92, when wrestling was at it's peak in the UK, and I was just fascinated by it. There were a few guys I knew (national hero Davey Boy, Arn Anderson from WCW on ITV), but so many strange characters I didn't. I became a huge Powers of Pain fan from that match, they looked so badass especially compared to the Demos, who just looked like pudgy guys in silly pants to my 10yr old self. When it boiled down to PoP vs the Conquistadors, it felt like the biggest mismatch in the world. I still love the Barbarian and the Warlord to this day, even if I have to accept one of them is actually a bit crap at wrestling. It's a really great match too, so many little bits I love. Tully tagging in, deciding he didn't fancy fighting the face who had just tagged in, and doing a sneaky walk to tag straight out to the Demos is awesome. It's still my go-to sickday comfort match.

1991 Taker pinning Hogan. This was the first SHOCKING finish I remember watching. Thanksgiving was a damper the next day for this little Hulkamaniac.

1998 the whole show. Really Vince Russo's shining moment and the visual of Vince and cronies skipping away after Shane turns is so awesome.

I rented Survivor Series 1990 so many times as a kid.

I think what stands out the most is how surreal the Hogan/Warrior/Tito Santana promo is. I started watching only a little bit earlier so I think my lifelong admiration of Tito came, in part, because I thought he was still a main eventer.

I was a huge classic horror movie fan so Undertaker I really liked as a kid. So I was cheering like nuts when he beat Hogan, whom this 12 year old had grown on. I had exactly TWO days in school to crow over it (Monday and Tuesday) until Hogan got the title back but that 48 hours I was in my little heel glory.

Loved the first 5 editions of the show. I remember renting the 1987 and 1988 versions of the show, and as a Hulkamaniac I was super upset about Hogan's cheap elimination in the 1987 main event. My family was moving into a new house that my Dad was renovating, and my brother and I as young kids (Dec 1988), watched the first Survivor Series on VHS. We both were hooked on the new show (even though the 1988 edition had just happened). It was a fond memory of mine in my early wrestling fandom.

The show became my favorite concept show, and the two Tag Teams Survivor Series matches from the 1987 and 1988 shows remain favorite matches of mine, especially the 1988 match (Demolition Team vs Powers of Pain Team). I also loved Gorilla and Jesse on the first three shows and thought Piper did a great job on the 1990 show. Gorilla and Bobby were awesome as always, in the 1991 edition. I think that's when my dislike for Undertaker started, was when he beat Hogan. Anyways, those shows are special to me, and I still watch them a few times a year. Jesse's rant in the Hogan match in 1989 is epic, as he was just on fire that whole show. Long live classic Survivor Series.

I just remember the first one in 87. I was 8 years old and in awe that there was a PPV other than Wrestlemania. We had to go to my uncle's house to watch it and the bunch of us watched it in a little cove he had in the upstairs of his house. What sticks out is the tag match and Bam Bam being able to hang with the monster heels in the main event. There was an older relative of my cousin watching with us who was rooting for all the heels and ribbing us the whole night about how awesome Honky Tonk man was and how Andre would crush Hogan. 1990 is also a show I watched on a loop as a kid. Real feel good show

I liked all of the first four and watch them often. Women's match in '87 was great, the Bigelow run but Andre still surviving, the 10 on 10 tag team at '88 and the next step in the Megapowers exploding to end the night, Jake using Damian to get the heels out of the ring in '89, Bossman bloodying Dusty after losing, and then 1990 with the debut of the Undertaker and DiBiase-Bret to end it (first time I saw Bret as a potential singles guy), a brief Hogan-Barbarian showdown to end their match (closest to a singles match they ever had!), and Tito surviving and making the grand finale. Even the Visionaries all surviving was a first time for a whole team.

I am much in the same boat as a lot of the people that have responded. I love the first few shows. My favorite matches included the 10 team tag matches from 87 and 88 because one gets to see how much depth there was in the roster. There was also the post-attack Savage/Roberts promos from 1991 that were quite awesome that set up This Tuesday in Texas. We got to see Owen convince his mother to throw in the towel for Bret in 1994 giving Mr Backlund the WWF Title. Bret wins the title from Diesel in 95 leading to 1996 and a complete turnaround from a terrible overall year of WWF shows (with a few bright spots). 96 gave us Austin/Bret for the first time as well as Sid as a face against Shawn. 97....I think we all know the biggest thing about that (GANG WARZ).

Wow...just looking at those shows just tells how much of an influence Survivor Series was for the first few years. It's a shame how much it has dropped off over the last 10 years or so.

Like I said before, the 87 and 88 shows were probably some of my favorites to watch because of the depth of the rosters at that time. Looking back now, you had tons of WWF Champions, NWA/WCW Champions, Tag Team champs, and future legends. It is just crazy to see what that roster became when compared to now.

1989 is my favourite show ever. From the amazing what you are thankful for open to the great great great Warriors vs Heenan Family main event the whole show is just fun. It might be Gorilla and Jesse's greatest night as well. Plus it's the only night with the perfect format of 4 vs 4 all night with no stupid finals match.

I would also put Team Flair promo from Survivor Series 1991, Flair and DiBiase both on one team was cool then and it is cool now.

One of the oddest ones I can remember as a kid is from that same show: the one where it is Road Warriors and Bossman vs. IRS and Natural Disasters.

Bossman is eliminated early, then Typhoon is eliminated after being accidentally hit with the briefcase and Earthquake bails leaving IRS 2 vs 1 against both Hawk and Animal.

What is really surprising is that IRS lasts a whole FIVE minutes against the Legion of Doom in a handicap match, which I thought was really mental as a kid and still find it kinda surprising now. Weird booking all around for that match.

weren't injuries the reason for koko & the red rooster getting into the main event of the 88 one?

EDIT: and scott casey making it onto the show

Could've swore Junkyard Dog and Don Muraco were supposed to be in 1988 as well, both got fired for drug busts IIRC. I think Casey replaced one of the Killer Bees who was replacing one of the two of them.

oh i didn't know that part, imagine one of them had to be slotted for the main event in the spot koko got then
