Was the match any good?

I really need to finalize the list of WWF house shows up through 1983 I need to get to fill in stuff I don't have. I've wanted to watch the 1983 Bob-Slaughter blow off in Philly. There are a number of other ones, though Corey's old Bob set has a fair number of them (though the vq is in need of upgrade).

I made a post over at tOA wondering if TNA would actually release Awesome Kong after the incident with Bubba The Love Sponge. It turns out, Kong apparently wants out. I'd be surprised if it happened, because the Knockouts division, and Kong especially, is one of the few things that separates TNA from WWE and that TNA hasn't managed to totally screw up.

My little scenario for the Royal Rumble:

Randy Orton loses to Sheamus after Dibiase and Rhodes botch an interference attempt and KO Orton...

HBK superkicks Taker earlier in the Rey match, to get his attention, Taker Stalks Shawn and Shawn realizes what he's done and scurries away with a "Oh shit" look on his face. He is shown running out to his car and taking off to avoid Taker's wrath.

A series of interviews with Rumble participants airs, and Legacy's Promo is interupted by Orton who berates Legacy and declares he's taking Shawn's spot in the Rumble.

So Orton, Dibiase, Rhodes work as a unit to survive and end up with Cena, Kane, Regal, HHH and Jericho...Cena dumps Kane...Legacy take advantage of Cena's weakened state dump him...as Orton is gloating at Cena, Dibiase grabs him and tosses Orton out!....Rhodes is aghast...Orton is restrained by officials...Rhodes shoves Dibiase so Ted kicks him and dumps him too...Rhodes and Orton re-enter and double team Ted, ultimately dumping him and Orton hits a RKO on the cement on Ted and he is stretchered off...

Meanwhile Regal and Jericho are double teaming HHH, they look like they are about to toss him, when EDGE comes in from the crowd and spears Jericho....Regal chases Edge to the ropes as Edge scurries off through the crowd...Regal turns around into a HHH clothesline and is out...a weakened Jericho then gets a Kick wham pedigree and is tossed.

This sets up for WM

HHH vs Sheamus

Orton vs Dibiase

Edge vs Jericho

HBK vs Taker

I'm reading the WON Awards issue right now, and even though I sporadically watch WWE enough to know what's going on, and read the WON every week, I'm still surprised by these awards. Really, Chris Jericho was Wrestler of the Year? The American Wolves were tag team of the year? Yet when I try to think of who was actually better, I'm at a loss. I guess Punk's summer was more interesting than anything Jericho did, even if I liked the Jericho/Big Show tag team, but that was only really a 4-5 month run. What a nothing happening year 2009 was.

You know how people would like to see Rock vs. Cena? I don't think it's gonna be happening any time soon.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson appeared on Live Audio Wrestling last night, and the following are excerpts from the interview:

"I want to use the platform as a host to literally rip things open. There's so much stuff we can do. We're going to create an incredible show, an incredible Raw. I'm doing another movie, but after that, we're going to create something special, unique, something badass for the fans. Talking to Vince (McMahon), whenever that's going to be, we're going to have a great time."

"I accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish in wrestling, so I wouldn't rule out going back. If the match was right and we could create something really unique and cool for the fans and for my opponent and for the company, I would do it in a second."

"I've never been interested in wrestling John Cena. The guys I wrestled in the past - from Goldberg to Hogan to Austin - were guys who I've really wanted to wrestle. If it can be done creatively but not only that, it's very important if I do back is that the writing has to be ripped open and really be pushed. I came from a time in the Attitude era where we trail-blazed a lot and were fearless in the things we said and did."

"There are a lot of restrictions now on the product, which by the way, I understand, and I enjoy some of the stuff I see and I know some of the writers and they're challenged every week, but if in fact I do go back, it would be an interesting collision of an Attitude time that I loved and the time now, but I'm sure we can always infuse things to make it work."

Part of the problem with Wrestler of the Year voting is that today the draw is more the promotional brand than any one particular wrestler. Still Jericho's a weak choice because he was pushed all year as a supporting player, rather than how a Wrestler of the Year should be pushed, and isn't a big merchandise seller. Really Rey Mysterio probably fits the traditional criteria the best, given that he's the hottest wrestler in Mexico, he's a big merchandise seller to kids and is great in ring worker to boot.

Let me see if I'm reading this correctly....

Chris Jericho is the wrestler of the year.

Chris Jericho spent the bulk of the year working as one half of a tag team.

The tag team of the year is...the American Wolves?

I mean, I liked the Jericho/Rey and Jericho/Steamboat feuds a bunch, but is that really enough to make you wrestler of the year if you think the rest of his year was less significant than the American Wolves? It was a weak year, and I won't complain about voters making a weak pick, but the internal logic looks wrong to me.

If we're going to talk about logic or lack thereof, I find it more amusing to make fun of how Dave acts like the WON awards are scientific proof of something, which has gotten a lot worse with his commentary on them the last few years.

Given the choice between an awards issue and the Dr Death obit, I'd take the Dr Death obit. I skimmed through the awards in five minutes. About the only interesting things were:

"UFC tied New Japan with four straight Promotion of the Year."

"Dana ties Baba with five straight Promoter of the Years."

"Cool! UF didn't win this year. All Japan's record of five straight Best TV Shows lives!"

Not that I loath UFC (though comparing MMA booking/promoting/tv to wrestling booking/promotion/tv is apples & oranges).

But do enjoy at least one AJPW record hold. :)

Anyway, let's hope that someone doesn't drop dead this week so that we finally get the Doc bio next week.

Scott Keith actually gave the Rumble *****.

I must have missed Bret Hart's entry in it

Edge is Canadian and he can sort-of do the sharpshooter. Just imagine in pink and black tights and it works!

I wish they would have let CM Punk stay loner. It was getting great, which meant that they had to screw it up somehow. They made up for it with Miz and MVP and Batista throwing out HBK which put a smile on my face.

The crowd's reactions seem to say they've figured out Hunter's strategy, which he hasn't altered since 2002. He thinks he's keeping himself relevant by inserting himself into feuds with hot acts, all the while he's killing the undercard. You'd think he'd figure out what made Flair, Rock, and Jericho so viable for so long was that they weren't afraid to look vulnerable.
