Oh man it's great to see Siva and Cocoa teaming again!

The new Horsemen get in a great interview. However, I don't think they're as united as JJ would want them to be. The Starrcade Cup has added intrigue, along with Hansen making sure he gets his world title shot. You've got something big happening here.

The Brutha's have moved on but Slick rebounds quick by bringing in Los Cubanos. The tag team division keeps getting stronger.

Adias gets his shot but Smiley proves to be the superior wrestler. I'm looking forward to Smiley's reign.

Johnson and Anderson kick off the Cup with an exciting TV match. Thanks to that sneaky JJ, Arn gets the win.

Rhodes and Haystacks give the fans a hard hitting fight. I loved that finish.

Judging by the first 2 matches, the Starrcade Cup is going to be a lot of fun.

Worldwide,

Damn! Ox Baker managing the Islanders! Havoc is coming!

Can't wait to see how Smiley handles Boone.

I can't imagine who Ox is bringing in for the Cup.

Great promo from the Horsemen. Love the explanation for Hansen joining which leaves so many interesting possibilities for how this all will play out.

Just like that Slickster has a new tag team in Los Cubanos.

Excited to see the Islanders with Ox Baker, as Kevin mentioned Ox is a great promo and a scary presence at ringside for Haku/Tama.

Starrcade should prove to be very fun to watch it play out leading to Starrcade!

WWE Network Roundup (Nov. 22-28): Survivor Series, NWA World Championship Wrestling - Cageside Seats

From the Asheville Civic Center in Asheville NC.

Previously recorded/Airing on the USA Network on 9/17/87.

On Commentary Bob Caudle Tony Schiavone.

Ring Announcer: David Crockett.

The Killer Bees (B.Brian Blair & Jim Brunzell) vs Zodiac & Jason the Terrible.

The departure of Angel of Death after the Labor Day Spectacular may have marked the official end of the Celestial Trinity, but Zodiac & Jason were determined to prove they are still a force to be reckoned with. The two masked men were very aggressive as they took the fight to the popular tandem. Even so Blair & Brunzell were riding high from their big win over the DWB's and refused to be pushed around. Though they absorbed a fair amount of punishment, the used their superior teamwork to quicken the pace eventually putting Zodiac away with the double dropkick. Commentary hype the roll the Bees are on & predict a title shot in their future.

"Mr Excitement" Johnny Ace vs Ron Slinker

We get a solid TV match with Ace's well rounded approach clashing with Slinker's martial arts based offense. Ace does what he can but is ground down by a barrage of strikes & throws which culminate in the roundhouse kick for the 1...2...3.

Good & Plenty (Ray Candy & Sweet Brown Sugar) vs The Islanders (Haku & Tama) w/Ox Baker

The sheer fiercity of the Islanders clearly takes Good & Plenty off gaurd & they struggle to get any sustained momentum. With the menacing Baker shouting instructions, the savage duo tear into their opponents with borderline animalistic fury. A double thrust kick on SBS signals the end of the match but the assault continues as Haku & Tama hold both their fallen adversaries allowing Baker to hit them both with the dreaded Heart punch! Baker & his savages have sent a strong message with commentary openly worrying about the arrival of Ox's mystery man in the main event.

NWA World Television Title.

"Black Magic" Norman Smiley(c) w/Ms Linda vs Commando Boone.

Boone uses his size & power to overwhelm Smiley in the opening moments of the match. The fans are up & cheering as the champ is bounced around the ring. Boone seems to be building to something when Ms Linda pulls her own man to the floor for a breather. Smiley uses most of the referee's count talking with his valet before re-entering the ring. It was time well spent as Smiley changes tactic, focusing on using his superior wrestling ability to wear the big man down. Halfway through the bout, the camera shows a tall, imposing man in military fatigues watches the proceedings with an stoic look on his face as he twirls his impressive moustache. Nobody in the ring notices him however & Smiley is able to synch in the "Norman Conquest" to successfully retain. While Smiley celebrates, commentary ask the obvious question....who was the man in the aisle?

Wrestling's 20 Greatest Moustaches – Page 19

Starrcade Cup Block B match.

"Nature Boy" Buddy Landel w/JJ Dillon vs "Exotic" Adrain Street w/Ms Linda

It's clear that Street heard Landel's comments last week & was not amused. He showed his displeasure with a series of stiff shots that had his opponent reeling. Give Budro credit though, he actually can back up his endless stream of tough talk & he's able to regroup and together the two put on what turns into a high quality back-and-forth technical bout that manages to pull the crowd in despite their distaste for both wrestlers. Towards the end there's an argument between JJ & Ms Linda that sees Dillon get into Linda's face even grabbing her arm. Her shouting gets Street's attention and he goes over, reaches through the ropes and grabs a handful of Dillon's hair. This causes him to release his grip on Linda which allows Street to run Dillon into the ring post. However just as JJ makes contact, Landel runs up behind Street & pulls him into an O'Connor roll with two handfuls of tights to win Block B's opening match.

Starrcade Cup Block B opening match.

Bruiser Brody vs Ox Baker's mystery competitor.

(Brody is stomping around the ring while Baker comes down & demands Crockett's mic which the frightened man wisely gives over)

Ox: I promised that tonight is when the carnage would truly begin & I intend to delever. I searched the darkest corners of this world for a man who I would lead to the NWA World Heavyweight Title and I found just what I was searching for. I found a man, no I found an animal who will stack the bodies to the sky on our path to total domination of the NWA. Now, behold with despair..... ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER!

The crowd & commentary both are in shock as the Madman of the Sudan stomps down the aisle & charges into the ring. What follows can barely be called a match as Brody & Abby seem more interested in tearing each other apart than actually winning points for the tournament. The two spill to the floor several times and it's during the last of these that leads to the finish. The ref is trying to convince the two to return to the ring when Brody hits Abby with a boot which sends him crashing into the post. When the ref goes to check on the Arabian monster, Ox takes the chance to sneak up behind Brody before spinning him around & nailing him with the Heart punch before rolling him back into the ring. Abby manages to regroup enough to follow him back in & hit the Sudanese Meat Cleaver (running elbowdrop to the throat) for the tainted win.

The Islanders and Ox Baker send a strong message with a win over Good & Plenty!

Uh oh....Col Debeers in the aisle is not good news.

A battle between two of my favorites and Landel pulls out the win....can't be mad at that!

Ox Baker managing Abdullah the Butcher is gonna be hell to contend with....even if your Bruiser Brody.

I knew it was only a matter of time before the Bees got into title contention.

Slinker takes the excitement out of Ace.

Damn! Ox and the Islanders send a strong message to everyone!

Props to Smiley for finding a way to take down Boone and retain his TV title.

It looks like Colonel DeBeers is making his debut in our game. This gimmick got some serious heat back in the 80s. I went to an AWA card in Oakland and a fan jumped the ring and started punching him, but DeBeers totally no sold it and twirled his mustache the entire time until Security ran in LOL.

Landel gets by Street thanks to chaos on the outside.

Ox is defiantly making his presence known tonight as he brings in Abdullah to take on Brody! I would've gone bonkers watching this on TV. Not even Brody can get up from an Ox heart punch/ Abby elbow drop combo.

Worldwide,

Spartanburg Vice and Tough Guy Inc prove their contenders.

Hopefully we see more of the Grappler in singles competition.

Cocoa has his partner's back as Siva earns a TV title shot.

Next week's Cup matches will be very interesting.

WWE Network Roundup (Nov. 22-28): Survivor Series, NWA World Championship Wrestling - Cageside Seats

From the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte NC.

Previously recorded & airing on 9/24/87 on the USA Network.

On Commentary: Bob Caudle & Tony Schiavone.

Ring Announcer: David Crockett.

Jerry Bryant vs Sean Royal

The feud between Spartanburg Vice & The New Breed has been raging for some time with no end in sight. Tonight the two sides meet again but this time their partners have been barred from ringside due to previous shenanigans. We get an energetic opener with the two rivals holding nothing back. The tide turns several times and both men get several near falls. The bout is so evenly matched that the two eat up the entirety of the 15 minute time limit. Security has to keep the two apart as the resulting draw is announced to the disappointment of the crowd. These two teams are headed to a explosive conclusion.

The Grappler 2 vs Iceman Parsons w/ Slick

Rumor has it that Parsons just barely missed out on being in the Starrcade Cup. Watching his behavior tonight, you get the sense that he is aware of it & is less than pleased at missing out. The Iceman was clearly looking to vent some frustration on the masked man rocking him with some stiff strikes. The Six Man champion isn't one to be pushed around however & makes sure to give as good as he gets. The result is a good old fashioned Texas brawl which the North Carolina crowd welcomes with open arms. Grappler 2 looks to end things with a Lariat but Slick grabs his leg coming off the ropes causing the masked man to trip. Parsons wastes no time pulling his adversary into a Piledriver for the tainted victory. If Parsons was looking for attention, he certainly has it now.

"Shooting Star" Keiichi Yamada & "Super Rookie" Hiroshi Hase vs The Stud Stable (Robert Fuller & Jimmy Golden)

Yamada & Hase have clearly been working on their teamwork and Fuller & Golden are clearly taken off-guard by the teamwork the Japanese duo display. Between Yamada's fast paced offense & Hase's technical ability, the Tennessee cousins have to delve deep into their bag of tricks to avoid defeat. This is shown when the Stud's trigger a brawl with all four men in the ring during which Golden grabs his cousin's towel & nailing Hase in the head with it. Fuller makes the cover & the Stud's manage to eek out a win. Though they lost, it's clear that the crowd has quickly grown attached to the Japanese pairing.

NWA World Television Title

"The Polynesian Prince" Siva Afi vs "Black Magic" Norman Smiley (c) w/Ms Linda

Cocoa Samoa is out cheering his partner on as Afi looks to capture his first title in the National Wrestling Alliance. The challenger is clearly hungry for this success as he blisters the champion's chest with chops & floors him with headbutts. Eventually Linda has to reach in & pull her client out to the floor for a regroup session. Upon re-entering the ring, the champion sets about changing the pace of the bout to one more to his liking, wearing his opponent down with classic British wrestling. While Afi struggles to match Smiley in this are, with the fans & his partner's support he's able to create openings leading to the tail end of the match being a back-and-forth affair. The turning point shockingly comes in the form of Jimmy Del Ray & Chic Donavon emerging from the crowd & driving Cocoa into ringpost. This captures Afi's attention at the worst possible moment allowing Smiley to lock in the "Norman Conquest" with Afi tapping out possibly as a way to check on his friend which he does as soon as he's released. Smiley may have retained his title but everyone's focus is on Cocoa & how the South Pacific Connection will respond to this attack by Radiance.

Starrcade Cup Block A match.

Arn Anderson w/JJ Dillon vs Giant Haystacks w/Ms Linda

Though neither man is exactly beloved by the crowd, there seems to be a contingent that is enamored enough with the thought of Anderson being torn apart by a 7 feet tall, 600 pound monster they can't help but cheer Haystacks. The story of the bout is one of Double A trying with increasing desperation to find anything that's actually effective against his gargantuan foe. Notably the same blonde man from last week is seen again in the aisle way & he seems at least somewhat pleased by Haystacks' performance. Eventually Dillon gets so frustrated he goes over & starts an argument with Linda in a scene reminiscent of last week. Just like last week, Linda's client takes offense to Dillon's behavior with Haystacks grabbing him by the throat and pulling him up on the apron. Arn tries to take advantage of this but Haystacks catches him by the throat as well before banging the two men's heads together before scooping Anderson up into the world's largest powerslam for the win.

Starrcade Cup Block A match.

"The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes vs "Soul Man" Rocky Johnson

Whereas in the previous match most of the crowd had no one to cheer for, here they are able to take in the sight of two of their favorites battling it out. As expected between these two, they have a competitive but respectful encounter with both men getting a chance to show what they can do. The end comes with Johnson setting up for the "Soul Man Shuffle" but just as he goes to throw the knockout punch, Rhodes springs to life to hit the "Bionic Elbow" to go 2-0 in block A.

I said PCW has the advantage with towns and loops but damn your right behind him. Your take on the NWA is extraordinary.  The big tourney going on is something to keep a close eye on. I am also wondering if this is Arn Anderson's shot to become bigger than he ever was. I think he has every opportunity to take his game to the next level.  He is going to have to get past the likes of Haystacks but I think with JJ, they will have a plan

I'm liking the Spartanburg/New Breed feud. The tag team division is red hot and every team has something to do.

Slick and Parsons vent their frustrations out on Grappler 2.

Stud Stable pull off another tainted win, but the exciting Japanese duo is getting over as a team.

Siva holds his own against Smiley until Radiance spoils everything. Looks like the start of another hot tag feud.

Distractions are in full throttle as Haystacks puts down Arn. We'll see how JJ and Arn rebound from this.

The American Dream defeats The Soul Man in the battle of fan favorites. Dusty's riding high on momentum right now.

Worldwide,

Good showcases that put over some solid finishers.

Adias gets another crack at the TV title.

I can't wait to see how Landel deals with Abby.

Enjoyed the shows this week.  I think Arn is missing some of his Horsemen that could have helped him fight off Haystacks.  Interesting match as Dusty takes on Rocky Johnson.  These are the type of matches that happen in Pool play.  Nice description of the fans on those two bouts.  I am really looking forward to Landel and Abbie.  Landel is big time but will need some chaos to go over Abbie.  Street and Brody is also interesting.  Street has been able to pull off some big wins in Dawn of War!

From the Memorial Auditorium in Greenville SC.

Previously recorded & Airing on 10/1/87 on the USA Network.

On Commentary: Bob Caudle & Tony Schiavone.

Ring announcer: David Crockett.

Severianus Hallvard Greco vs Col Debeers

Col Debeers is revealed to be the man spotted observing the members of the Commonwealth over recent weeks. The native of Johannesburg South Africa cut an imposing figure as he marched to the ring twirling his mustache & giving the fans a look of barely restrained contempt. He launched a all-out assault on young Greco beating him from pillar to post before finishing him off with what can be best described as a face first Piledriver. While his motives remain a mystery, it's clear that the NWA locker room would be wise to keep an eye on the towering Colonel.

The Killer Bees (B. Brian Blair & Jim Brunzell) vs Los Cubanos (Fidel Sierra & Ricky Santana) w/Slick

Tough test for the newest members of Black Diamond Entertainment as they take on a tandem on quite the roll in the Killer Bees. They give a good accounting of themselves as Sierra's power & Santana's street fighter mentality make a dangerous combination. But Blair & Brunzell wars with the DWB'S have given them plenty of experience facing opponents who like to play rough & they show they aren't afraid to fight fire with fire. Their teamwork proves the deciding factor as Blair attempts a crucifix on Sierra but the muscular Cuban is able to resist being taken down. That changes with Brunzell nails him with a dropkick which allows Blair to take the win while Brunzell holds off Santana. An impressive display by Los Cubanos but it seems there may be no stopping the Bees.

Tom "MegaMan" McGee vs Jason the Terrible

McGee is looking to reset after losing his cherished TV title & has a chance tonight against the always dangerous Jason. The masked terror is himself looking to reassert both himself as well as Zodiac after losing the Six Man Tag Team Titles. The result is neither man giving an inch as they hammer each other with devastating blows. The finish sees Jason going for his top rope headbutt only for MegaMan to roll out of the way. Jason staggers up as McGee climbs the ropes before coming off with a moonsault for the 1,2,3. McGee celebrates with the fans as his climb back up the mountain has begun.

NWA World Television Title.

"Lone Star" Brian Adidas vs "Black Magic" Norman Smiley(c) w/Ms Linda

Adidas has become something of a fixture of the TV title scene despite not yet winning the title itself. Tonight he mounted his second challenge to Smiley who has become something of a rival of his since even before the Englishman captured the gold. As has become standard, these two put on something of a clinic, exchanging hold & counters to those holds with neither man able to hold an advantage for long. This continues to the end of the 20 minute time limit. Both men seem disappointed but they shake hands with each clearly looking forward to their next encounter. As this happens, the camera catches Col Debeers standing in the aisle, shaking his head with a sour look on his face.

Starrcade Cup Block B match.

"Nature Boy" Buddy Landel w/JJ Dillon vs Abdullah the Butcher w/Ox Baker

Commentary explains that the NWA Board of Directors of Directors has decreed that anyone who interferes in the Starrcade Cup matches going forward will face suspension as well as a stiff fine. Landel was clearly cursing this decision as he did everything in his power to avoid locking up with the madman from the Sudan. Making his situation worse was the presence of Baker who in addition to shouting threats at Landel himself also made a point of keeping close to Dillon ensuring he did little more than shout encouragement to his client. Eventually Landel's combination of stalling & other dirty tricks sends Abby over the edge and he furiously pounds away at Landel in the corner. When referee Nick Patrick tries to intervene, Abby shoves him away. A second attempt nets not only a shove but a chop to the top of the head which has Patrick calling for a disqualification. If Landel thought this would save him he was sorely mistaken as the incensed Abby took the opportunity to pull out a fork & start stabbing Landel with it! The Andersons run down to pull Buddy out of harms way and they escort him & JJ to the back as Ox corrals his blood crazed Butcher.

Starrcade Cup Block B match

Bruiser Brody vs "Exotic" Adrain Street w/ Ms Linda

Brody was in no mood for Street's preening & posing, jumping the Englishman as soon as he stepped through the ropes. After several minutes of getting knocked about the ring, Street dove to the floor to regroup only for Brody to follow him outside. We get a chase around the ring but which ends with Street diving back into the ring. When Brody slides in after him however, Street nails him with a knee to the side of the head. Like Hawk before him, Brody gets a painful lesson in how tough Street can be as he's battered with stiff shots & snug submission holds. After a grueling main event, Brody manages to floor Street with a boot to the face before coming off the ropes with the "King Kong Knee Drop" for the hard fought win.

Says those "island savages are gonna regret the day they decided to mess with the most beautiful tag team in wrestling."

Solie recaps the results of the Block B matches from last night & runs down the updated score for that block. Buddy Landel leads with a record of 2-0 Bruiser Brody & Abdullah the Butcher are tied with a score of  1-1 & Adrian Street is in last place with a score of 0-2. He then runs down the final Block A matches which will take place next week with Giant Haystacks vs Rocky Johnson & Arn Anderson vs Dusty Rhodes!

Really enjoyed the Starcade Cup series matches here.  Good booking to have Abbie look really strong but push Landel through with the DQ win.  Same with keeping Street looking strong as Brody barely got by his match.

Also enjoy all the quality matches throughout your TV show.  Bees vs Cubanos, McGee vs Jason the Terrible, Adias vs Smiley along with the Starcade mathes would have been a TV show to remember when I was a kid.

I think this Col. Debeers angle is going to be awesome.  Man I hated him as a kid.  This is going to bring huge heat to the NWA.

I really like your TV format with competitive matches.

NWA better take notice because Col. Debeers is on the scene!

The tag team division is red hot. The Bees and Cubanos prove this. The Bees should be in the title hunt very soon.

Mega Man takes down the monster Jason as he rises up that ladder again.

Adias takes TV champ Smiley to the limit and I'm sure we're going to get more. Looked like Debeers wasn't fond of the good sportsmanship.

LOL, the Landel/Abby match went down exactly how it should have. Very smart and logical booking.

Props to Street for holding his own against Brody. No shame in that performance.

Worldwide,

Radiance shows off their impressive teamwork.

Manny and Dundee get in quality TV time.

Oh yea, can't wait to see Smiley defend against the Candyman.

Sherri gets the heat going with the Islanders.

More exciting Starrcade Cup matches ahead.

On Commentary: Bob Caudle & Tony Schiavone.

Ring announcer: David Crockett.

"The Haitian Sensation" Tyree Pride vs "Lord" Jonathan Boyd

An international showcase to start us off this week as Tyree Pride takes on Syndy Australia naitve Jonathan Boyd who is making his NWA debut. Despite his noble title, Boyd looks nearly feral with his barrel chest and long unkempt beard. He certainly doesn't fight like a gentleman either as he assaults the Haitian athlete with a barrage of brawling and power moves. Pride's high-flying style opens some windows but he struggles to build any sustained momentum. The end comes with Pride going for his flying Bodypress but Boyd sidesteps it & catches Pride in the Iron Claw. The Port-au-Prince naitve struggles with all he's got but eventually succombs giving the Aussie the win in his debut. Curiously, as Boyd is making his way to the back, Col Debeers intercepts him and after a brief conversation they shake hands and walk back together.

Commando Boone vs Zodiac

The masked man uses all his devious cunning to outwit the big man but Boone just powers through it. As evasive as the former Six Man champion is, Boone is able to get ahold of him and demolish him with simple but effective power moves before claiming victory with the big splash.

The Carolina Bobcats (Bobcat#1 & Bobcat#2) vs The Islanders (Haku & Tama) w/Ox Baker

One got the impression that Ox was still sore about Abby getting DQ'd against Landel last week and had ordered his Islanders to cheer him up by finding out just how many ways there are to skin a cat. Utter domination by Baker's savages with Haku getting several people in the audience to wince as he scooped up on of the Bobcats and delivered not 1, not 2 but 3 backbreakers. Haku would be pivotal to the finish as he wrapped his fingers around Bobcat#2's throat in what Ox informed Commentary was called the "Tongan Death Grip" which earned him the three count as Tama nearly decapitated Bobcat#1 with a savate kick. After the bell, Ox entered the ring and after running off the ref, had his team hold up the jobbers allowing him to give each a heart punch. At the very least that seemed to improve Ox's mood which has to be a good thing. Right?

NWA World Television Title.

"Black Magic" Norman Smiley(c) w/Ms Linda vs "The Candyman" Ray Candy

Though Candy's size and power certainly gave Smiley some trouble, the champion spent the bulk of the match utterly out- wrestling his opponent. He draws the bout out which it becomes clear is a ploy to wear the larger man down & as soon as Candy becomes winded, Smiley pounces and clamps on the "Norman Conquest" earning him a submission for another successful defense.

Starrcade Cup Block A match.

"Soul Man" Rocky Johnson vs Giant Haystacks w/Ms Linda

The two lower ranking members of Black A are going at it. Commentary point out that Haystacks still has a chance to win the block but that would require not just him defeating Johnson but for Anderson to win in the main event whereas Johnson has been mathematically eminated. Rocky certainly is fighting like a man with nothing to lose as he repeatedly throws himself at Haystacks peppering the British behemoth with rights and lefts. Haystacks is determined not to let his chance, however slim it may be, slip through his fingers and responds by repeatedly tossing Johnson across the ring as if he were a small child. After a dramatic fight for survival, it looks like Haystacks is about to finish Johnson off with a massive splash in the corner but the Soul Man ducks out of the way causing the Giant to crash into the turnbuckle so hard people watching swear the ring moved! Haystacks stumbles backwards and trips over Johnson who has dropped down on all fours. Johnson then grabs Haystacks legs and flips over in a jacknife cover for the surprise 3 count!

Starrcade Cup Block A match.

"The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes vs Arn Anderson w/JJ Dillon

Look, y'all know what to expect here. It's Dusty Rhodes vs Arn Anderson! They do hold back a bit as they don't want to give everything away in one go but they absolutely produce a stellar TV main event. After an intense back-and-forth affair, Dillon distracts the ref so Arn can hit Rhodes with a shoe JJ passed him but Dusty boots him in the gut, swipes the shoe and blasts Double A with it. He knocks JJ off the apron before hitting a running elbowdrop to win both the match and the block.

Boyd makes an impactful debut. An alliance between Debeers and Boyd? OH NO!

If you look back at this game's history, Boone has done quite well. He's keeping that up in the NWA.

Ox and the Islanders is such a devastating combo.

Smiley shows off his tremendous skills by dismantling the big man.

I have to admit, I popped big time when Johnson pulled of that win over Haystacks. What a great TV moment.

Dusty vs. Arn always delivers. Dusty wins the A block and is really close to a Starrcade main event.

Worldwide,

Another solid round of showcases with Fuller, Spartanburg and Adonis.

Jump'n Joe gets his shot at Smiley. Smiley's been taking on a variety of challengers.

Fright Night is really shaping up. Hansen vs. Flair! Bees get their title shot. And the winners of the Spartanburg/New Breed feud will be rewarded with a US tag shot.

Next week's Block B matches will be a lot of fun. Dusty is going to have his hands full with whoever wins it.

Great storylines as we head down the road to Starrcade.
