Kronus and Saturn get a well-deserved win. They are only rookies, but they are already looking quite promising. Steve Wright vs Adrian Street sounded like it was a great technical display. Big John Studd in NWA is going to be interesting, and pairing him with Baby Doll/Ron Fuller is a good choice to start things off. Jimmy Snuka pins Super Destroyer and may have earned himself a title shot.

The Master Blasters have a great debut and Kurrgan looked very impressive. Super Strong Machine also appears to have the match of the night with a solid win over Rod Price and SSM looks to be in a title hunt as well. Two solid shows for the fans in Georgia and those viewing on the USA Network.

Really thought this was a great week for the NWA.

The quality of matches on TV was awesome...

Valiant vs Koloff, Steven Wright vs Adrian Street, John Studd coming to help Baby Doll and then Wahoo finding some awesome tag partners to face Paul Jone's Army.  I hope Superfly will leap soon!  He is a great addition.

Loved it all!!

Baby Doll with John Studd is HUGE. Literally. Might change the landscape some for her fortunes with Studd backing her up.

Jimmy/Ivan would certainly get fans fired up as the first match out of the gate. Russians are always hated especially in the south. Jimmy Valiant was always good at getting the fans behind him, even he became the old vegan emaciated version a few years from now.

Saturn and Kronus, though rookies have a good look and could make some waves in the tag division. Maybe not title material just yet but they might be spoilers.

From the Civic Center in Fayetteville NC.

Previously recorded & airing on 1/13/89 on the USA Network.

On Commentary: Gordon Solie

Ring announcer/Interviews: Sean Moony

 Match #1

The Lawmen (Billy Joe Travis & Doug Gilbert) vs The Nasty Boys (Brian Knobs & Jerry Saggs)

The popular Lawmen put up a fierce fight but the brawlers from the streets of New York city brute forced their way to victory via a double DDT on Gilbert which Solie calls "a trip to Nastyville".

Match #2

Super Strong Machine defeats Arthur Brown with the "Devil Windmill" suplex.

SSM is joined by his students the Zero Fighters as he hands Mooney a letter. The announcer reads the message which states that the Japanese trio is challenging the Stud Stable for the Six Man Tag Team Titles.

Match #3

The Master Blasters (Blade & Iron) defeat The Carolina Bobcats with the double team move from last week which Solie calls "Welcome to the Wasteland"

Match #4

Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka vs "Black Bullet" Shaska Whatley w/"Number One" Paul Jones

Jones was apparently irate that Snuka was able to pin Super Destroyer last week putting himself in prime position to challenge for the Heritage Championship and decided that Whatley would be the one to punish Snuka for this offense. To his credit Whatley launched an all out assault but ultimately fell to the "Superfly" splash. Jones was most unsatisfied by the result and lectured Whatley all the way up the aisle.

Match #5

The debuting Dynamite Kid defeats The Pearl with a "Dragon" suplex.

Before his match, Manny Fernandez joins Mooney and says that Dick Slater conveniently wasn't there this week but sooner or later he'd learn that when you mess with the bull, you get the horns.

Match #6

"Raging Bull" Manny Fernandez defeats "Ruthless" Rocco Maritato with the "Flying Burrito"

Main Event.

NWA World Heavyweight Champion "Rugged Ron Garvin & "The Doctor of Desire" Tom Prichard vs The Four Horsemen (Bob Orton & Buddy Landel) w/JJ Dillon

A action packed main event with each man getting some shine. Garvin and Orton are largely kept apart before finding each other near the end. That end comes when a shot from Dillon's shoe leaves Prichard vulnerable to a corkscrew elbow from Landel for the three.

On Commentary: Bob Caudle David Crockett

"Boogie Woogie Man" Jimmy Valiant defeats "Beautiful" Bill Beverly with the "Groovin" elbow.

Big John Studd w/Baby Doll squashes Ed Morrison in under a minute before applying a reverse bearhug and squeezing him until he passed out. Suffice to say, Baby Doll looked extremely pleased with her new bodyguard.

The Eliminators (John Kronus Perry Saturn) defeat The Carolina Reapers with the double team move from last week which Caudle calls "Total Elimination"

Main event.

"Exotic" Adrian Street w/Ms Linda defeats Brad Anderson w/Ole Anderson with the Crossface Chicken Wing.

I am excited to see what we've got going on here with some new faces and I expect some good stuff from Big John Studd. Dynamite Kid makes his presence known. We've also got Jimmy Snuka making the reigns... Adrian Street with a good win... Ronnie better keep his eyes on the prize because I feel like there's lety of people who would like a shot against him. I don't want to stir the shit... but makes me wonder who has the real Horsemen in our world with the two conflicting groups...I see both making a claim to the prize.

The Nasty Boys quickly make their presence known. Welcome to Nastyville!

The Japanese have put the Stud Stable on notice. This is going to be good.

Whatley goes down to the Superfly Splash. No shame in that, but Jones doesn't seem to care as he gives Whatley an earful.

Dynamite Kid is in an interesting setting here. I hope we get a Dynamite/Street match down the road.

Manny gives a stern message to Slater. You have a great feud on your hands.

The Horsemen pick up a big win. Dillion's shoe and Budro's corkscrew elbow is quite the combination.

Boogie Woogie Man proves he can still energize a crowd.

I would be smiling too, if I had Big John Studd as a bodyguard. Awesome debut.

Street's on a roll.

A lot of good stuff going on in the NWA. I especially like the fresh tag teams coming in.

The weekend of January 20 & 21st.

The Four Horsemen.

After spending the last couple weeks touring Japan, Ole Anderson and Harley Race returned on Main Event with a convincing win over a pair of local talents. Afterwards JJ Dillon informed Sean Mooney and announced that his clients would invoke their rematch clause at SuperBrawl 2. Race said the Horsemen would prove once and for all that the Road Warriors are "all that and no cattle" and "coasting on a look they ripped off a b movie". Ole joined in and said that after dedicating his career to bringing wrestling excellence to tag wrestling, it drives him mad to see the titles the Andersons and Horsemen made famous held by two "roided up statues who can't tell a wristlock from a wristwatch".

#1 contender Bob Orton also looked impressive in the main event of Worldwide with a clean win over Steve Wright. NWA World champion Ron Garvin was on commentary for the match and vowed to beat "The Ace" just like he did back in October. Orton dedicated the match winning Super-plex to the champ and the two closed the show with a tense state down.

The Paul Jones Army.

It was announced on Main Event that Jimmy Snuka would challenge The Super Destroyer for the NWA Heritage Championship at SuperBrawl 2 due to his pinning the champion as well as his generally impressive win ratio since returning. Jones was clearly seething about the decision as Shaska Whatley throttled a jobber of the week. Whatley was a good mood following his victory but Jones refused to even look at him as they returned to the locker room. Kamala squashing three unlucky souls later in the show at least put a smile on Jones' face.

Roanoke.

On Worldwide Bob Caudle announced a special show coming later in the week at the Roanoke Coliseum in Roanoke Virginia which will have massive implications for SuperBrawl 2. In Roanoke a one night 8 Man tournament will be held with the winner challenging Junkyard Dog for the NWA United States title at SuperBrawl 2, out of the first round matches announced the one that got the biggest reaction was the first encounter between Manny Fernandez and Dick Slater! That same night will see a four corners elimination tag team match with the winners challenging The Sheepherders for the NWA United States Tag Team titles.

NWA Live @ the Roanoke Coliseum in Roanoke VA 1/24/89.

United States Title #1 Contender tournament. Quarterfinals.

"Russian Bear" Ivan Koloff defeats "Boogie Woogie Man" Jimmy Valiant after ramming his head into a turnbuckle with the "Russian" chain laid across it.

"The Doctor of Desire" Tom Prichard defeats "Black Bullet" Shaska Whatley w/"Number One" Paul Jones with a Superkick. Once again Jones lectured his client on the way to the back.

"Tennessee Stud" Robert Fuller w/"The Mastermind" Ron Fuller defeats "Exotic" Adrian Street w/Ms Linda when Fuller caught Street with his "loaded" boot as the ref was breaking up an argument between Ron and a nervous looking Linda.

"Raging Bull" Manny Fernandez vs "The Unpredictable" Dick Slater never got started due to Fernandez charging Slater in the aisleway. The two brawled throughout the arena before security finally managed to separate the two of them which was long after the referee disqualified both of them.

*Intermission*

Semifinals.

Tom Prichard defeats Ivan Koloff with a Superkick. Koloff looked to hit Prichard with his chain but a bandaged Jimmy Valiant ran down and swiped it from him.

Robert Fuller gets a bye to the finals.

Four Corner Eliminaton match. Winners challenge for the NWA United States Tag Team titles at SuperBrawl 2.

The Patriots (Firebreaker Chip and Todd Champion) vs Badd Company (Pat Tanaka & Paul Diamond) w/"The Perfect 10" Baby Doll and Big John Studd vs The Renegade Warriors (Mark & Chris Youngblood) vs The Samoan Island Tribe (Alofa & Fatu)

Order of eliminaton:

Badd Company eliminated The Patriots after interference from Big John Studd.

The Renegade Warriors eliminated The Samoan Island Tribe when Mark caught Alofa with a sunsetflip from the top rope.

The Renegade Warriors eliminated Badd Company. Studd tried to interfere again but The Patriots came down and intercepted him. Badd Company was distracted by the ruckus allowing the Youngbloods to catch them in dual schoolboys for the win.

Tournament Finals.

Robert Fuller w/Ron Fuller defeats Tom Prichard after Ron slipped Robert a foreign object which he slide into his elbowpad which he then used to k.o Prichard.

I loved your SuperBrawl 2 build up.

Ole and Harley have some serious words for the Road Warriors. This is great, we've got two grizzled vets going up against 2 muscled up powerhouses.

Orton looks more than ready for his shot at Garvin.

Big night in Roanoke.

You've produced some epic feuds in the NWA and Slater vs. Manny is going to be another one.

Boogie Woogie Man and Uncle Ivan now have a hot feud going.

Prichard looked great tonight but thanks to the Mastermind, Ron will get his shot at JYD.

I'll say this, the Renegade Warriors really earned their US tag title shot. They should give the Sheepherders a fight.

Another fun week in the NWA.

NWA continues to set the stage for its consistency. I like that tournament... WCW and NWA did these back in the day... US title and US Tag Titles if I remember correctly. Baby Doll next to John Studd is a great image. Superbrawl 2 is on the Horizon... I have a feeling there will be some awesome spots leading up to this marquee event.

On commentary: Gordon Solie

Ring announcer/interviews: Sean Mooney

Match #1

The Renegade Warriors (Mark & Chris Youngblood) vs The Eliminators (John Kronos & Perry Saturn)

Solie hyped the Youngblood's winning the four corners match in Roanoke to earn a shot at the NWA United States Tag Team titles at SuperBrawl 2. The Eliminators seemed to realize the opportunity before them and gave the brothers all they could handle. The Youngblood's hung in there and Chris was able to turn a fireman's carry from Saturn into a crucifix for the three. The brothers were offering handshakes to the Eliminators when the Sheepherders made their way to ringside. While security kept the teams apart the champs had put their challengers on notice.

Match #2

Jamie Dundee defeats Bill Ravencroft with a second rope fist-drop.

VTR- we see a recap of the feud between Manny Fernandez and Dick Slater with Solie saying hyping these two meeting in the main event.

Match #3

Brad Anderson w/Ole Anderson defeats John Arbuckle with a Fujiwara armbar.

Match #4.

The Zero Fighters (Hiroshi Hase & Keiichi Yamada) w/Super Strong Machine vs The Stud Stable (Rod Price & Tommy Cairo) w/"The Mastermind" Ron Fuller

With their "sensei" standing guard, the ZFs are able to give the young bucks of the Stud Stable their full attention. While Price & Cairo put up a fine effort, battering their opponents with a series of power moves, it wasn't enough to overcome the ability of the Japanese duo and Hase was able to catch Price with a victory roll to take the win. After raising his students hands, SSM hands Mooney a note. No more stalling, he and his students will meet the Stud Stable at SuperBrawl 2!

Match #5

Too Cold Scorpio defeats Too Hot Taurus with a 450 splash.

Match #6

Non title.

The Super Destroyer w/"Number One" Paul Jones defeats "Sweet" Stevie Lane with the Super-plex.

Main event.

"Raging Bull" Manny Fernandez vs "The Unpredictable" Dick Slater

You can feel the animosity as these two stare each other down. Fists are flying the second the bell rings. It looks like the ref might throw it out a few times but lets things play out. Eventually things spill to the floor and neither man even seems to notice the 10 count or even when the bell ringing. Security are able to pry the two off each other but it's obvious nothing has been settled.

Sheepherders put the Warriors on notice, but after their performance against the Eliminators, I think the Warriors are ready.

Jamie got a lot of seasoning in Music City. I think he's tuned up well for the NWA.

Brad will continue the Anderson legacy.

The Japanese have set a date with the Stud Stable.

It's great seeing Super D having a resurgence as US champ.

The feud continues with Manny and Slater. This is going to get wild.

Worldwide,

Wright, Blasters and Prichard get in some good TV exposure.

Uncle Ivan gets the best of Boogie Woogie Man tonight. I'm enjoying this feud between the vets.

Sorry for getting so far behind.  Really enjoyed the Dirt Sheet format for the build up to Roanoke.  I thought Harley Race's comments about the Road Warriors stealing their gimmick from a "B" movie was hilarious.

Great show in Roanoke.  I love when house shows have such huge implications going forward.  From this event we get a Slater vs Manny feud and tow great title matches down the road.  Great job!

You've done a great job getting 1989 off and flying!

Match #1

The Patriots (Firebreaker Chip & Todd Champion) vs Badd Company (Pat Tanaka Paul Diamond) w/"The Perfect 10" Baby Doll & Big John Studd

These two teams originally met at Day One after Chip got a little distracted by Baby Doll (though who can blame him?) They'd meet again in Roanoke where Studd would allow Badd Company to snatch another victory but The Patriots would get some payback by jumping the big man and arguably costing BC a title opportunity. They meet tonight to hopefully settle the score. We get a energetic opener with fast paced offense all around with Champion spicing things up with his power moves. Speaking of Champion, he's seen making eyes at Baby Doll a couple times but it seems the presence of Big John keeps the Patriot away. The two teams are evenly matched the whole way until the bell rings at the end of the 15 minute time limit. The two sides leave without incident but there's definitely more to be had here.

Match #2

The Master Blasters (Iron & Blade) defeat Tom Nugent and Ben Walsh with "Welcome to the Wasteland" on Nugent.

*We see footage of NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ron Garvin's tour of the United Kingdom with him defending the Ten Pounds of Gold against the best Britain has to offer.*

Match #3

"The Latin Heartthrob" Al Perez defeats "Sadistic" Samuel Rothstein with the bridging German suplex.

Match #4

"Raging Bull Manny Fernandez vs "The Monster" Rip Morgan w/The Assassin

Fernandez's chance at payback on Slater went up in smoke last week when his match with the Unpredictable one ended in a doubt countout. Fernandez was in a foul mood and looking to take it out on someone. Morgan is no man's punching bag however and we get a heated brawl that only ends when Dick Slater emerged from the crowd and attacked his rival. Security got the two separated but you can't keep these two apart together. Interestingly some people observed that as the Assassin lead a fired up Morgan away, the masked man shot a look at Slater.

Match #5

"The Ugandan Giant" Kamala w/"Number One Paul Jones & Friday defeats Rainbow Warriors Red, Green & Blue by stacking the three men then coming down on the pile with "Air Africa".

We see footage of the NWA United States Tag Team Champions recent tour of Canada with the New Zealanders bringing their trademark chaos to the Great White North.

Match #6

Non title.

NWA United States Champion Junkyard Dog defeats El Espantoso with the "Thump"

Main Event.

NWA World Tag Team Champion Road Warrior Hawk vs Ole "Roc" Anderson w/JJ Dillon

These two actually have a lengthy history dating back to the Georgia territory where the Road Warriors originally made their name. It seems that familiarity does indeed breed contempt as the two went at it tooth and nail. Hawk seemed to have things well in hand when Dillon waved to the back summoning Harley Race and Brad Anderson armed with a chair(that sharp eyed fans will notice has already been put to work). The heels put a beating on Hawk culminating in Ole and JJ pinning Hawk down as Brad wrapped the chair around Hawk's arm allowing Race to deliver a sickening stomp. At this a clearly beaten down Animal finally arrived and the heels retreated clearly satisfied with their work.

Big John Studd w/"The Perfect 10" Baby Doll defeats The Enforcer with a bearhug.

The Patriots and Badd Co. have a pretty good feud going on. Looks like the Patriots have somebody coming in to help even things up at SuperBrawl.

Cool seeing Ron Garvin defending the world title in the UK.

Slater gets in an attack on Manny, but the Assassin didn't seem to keen on his interference.

Kamala still proves he's a beast.

JYD is tuned up and ready for Fuller. That should be a fun match at SuperBrawl.

You don't see the Road Warriors take a serious beating very often, but man did the Horsemen give them one tonight.

Worldwide,

Jaime helps his Dad's former partner out. I hope he knows what he's getting himself into. Those Horsemen don't play around.

I'm pumped for SuperBrawl!

Awesome main event with Road Warrior and Ole.  This seemed like Hawk should come out on top but never count out James J Dillion and his men.

Super Brawl is shaping up nicely.  I can't wait for Garvin and Ace.  This one could go either way and this would really push Orton up the historic rankings of Dawn of War!

JYD vs Fuller... such a classic Southern Wrestling bout.  One of my favorite all-time match ups here.

Manny vs Slater.... BRAWL!!

Match #1

Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka and The Renegade Warriors (Mark & Chris Youngblood) vs The Paul Jones Army (The Super Destroyer & The Sheepherders) w/"Number One" Paul Jones

The first of three multi-man tags to hype the major matches at SuperBrawl 2 (with another on Worldwide tomorrow). Jones is extra aggressive tonight and encourages his men to put a hurting on their opponents. Snuka and the Warriors dig deep to battle back causing Jones to call in reinforcements in the form of Shaska Whatley. This backfires as a miscue leads to Miller colliding with Whatley allowing Snuka to roll him up for the win. Jones read Whatley the riot act while the three champions followed behind them glaring at Whatley the whole time.

Match #2

Jamie Dundee defeats "Tough" Tommy Allen with a second rope fist drop.

Jamie joins Mooney along with Adrian Street and Ms Linda. Jamie says that when he signed with the NWA he's father Bill gave him one piece of advice, reach out to Adrian Street. Mooney hypes the history between Street and the elder Dundee including multiple title reigns together. Street says Bill is one of his closest friends so he'll gladly lend Jamie a hand he makes clear he expects the younger Dundee to listen closely starting now. The first lesson is to learn to pick your battles. He appreciates the assist last week but Jamie isn't ready for the Horsemen. Jamie agrees that Street is in charge and the two shake hands to close the interview.

Match #3

Dynamite Kid defeats Chris Huber with a diving headbutt.

Match #4

NWA United States Champion Junkyard Dog, Super Strong Machine and the Zero Fighters (Hiroshi Hase & Keiichi Yamada) vs The Stud Stable (Robert Fuller, Jimmy Golden, Rod Price & Tommy Cairo) w/"The Mastermind" Ron Fuller

Between JYD and the Stud Stable, any attempt by the Japanese trio to have a clean wrestling match is abandoned in favor of a Southern style melee. This chaos works in the heels favor as while JYD is able to hit the "Thump" on Fuller the ref is distracted allowing Ron to pass a title belt to Price which he drives into the Dog's back. He rolls Fuller on top and gets the ref's attention leading to the three count.

Match #5

Brad Anderson defeats Randy Hutchinson with a Fujiwara armbar.

Match #6

"Pitbull" Kerry Brown defeats The Midnight Bomber with a powerbomb.

Main Event.

NWA World Heavyweight Champion "Rugged" Ron Garvin and the NWA World Tag Team Champions The Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal) vs The Four Horsemen (Bob Orton, Ole Anderson & Harley Race) w/JJ Dillon

Hawk came out with a brace on his arm from last week and it seemed that Garvin and Animal were content to carry the lions share of the workload. They couldn't keep Hawk out of the battle forever though and while brute put on a good showing, an arm breaker by Ole lead to a lariat by Orton and a win for the Horsemen.
