Two very good pieces of television back to back for NWA as the Starrcade Series rolls on. Can Kamala take control of the A block or will Wahoo McDaniel make things interesting?

I love all the interesting matchups in NWA, you never know what you will get next. Keeps things interesting and I'm sure the TV audience for NWA appreciates as the diversity, especially with the singles matches.

From the Dorton Arena in Raleigh NC.

Previously recorded airing on 8/2/88 on the USA Network.

On Commentary: Gordon Solie.

Ring announcer/Interviews: Sean Moony

Match 1. Starrcade Series Block A match.

"Chief Joe Lightfoot vs Tennessee Stud" Robert Fuller w/"The Mastermind" Ron Fuller.

The fans really didn't have a dog in this fight and you get the feeling they'd be happy if a way was found for both men to lose. Ron's presence proved the difference maker, snatching the "War club" away when Lightfoot went to retrieve it. Lightfoot demanded his property back, getting so caught up arguing with Ron he didn't notice Robert coming up behind for a schoolboy with both hands full of tights for 2 more points for the Tennessee native.

Match 2.

"World's Strongest Man" Bill Kazmaier defeats The Minotaur with a running powerslam.

We see a video package showing highlights of Tully Blanchard's European tour. We see him defending the Ten Pounds of Gold in England, France and Germany!

Match 3.

Brett "Hack" Sawyer defeats The American Ninja with a bridging German suplex. After his win, Sawyer was heard boasting he had the "best German suplex in the business."

Match 4. Starrcade Series Block A match.

"Rugged" Ron Garvin vs "Wildcat" Wendell Cooley.

The two fan favorites shake hands before embarking on a respectful yet competitive match. While Garvin certainly had his supporters, a large section of the crowd was rooting for Cooley to pull off what would have to be considered an upset. While the Wildcat was able to score a number of nearfalls, he wasn't able to seal the deal before Garvin caught him with a top rope sunsetflip for the win. The two shared another handshake to the delight of the fans.

Match 5.

The Sheepherders (Butch Miller & Luke Williams) w/"Number One" Paul Jones defeats The Carolina Bobcats with a double gutbuster on Bobcat #2.

Paul Jones tells Sean Moony that he's done playing around with Indians and Japs and it's time for the Army to start collecting gold. Either Kamala or Super Destroyer is going to bring him the World Heavyweight Title and the Sheepherders are going to bring the United States Tag Team Titles!

Match 6.

Non title

NWA Heritage Champion "Pitbull" Kerry Brown defeats "Psycho" Sid Miller with a Powerbomb.

Main event. Starrcade Series Block A match.

"Chief" Wahoo McDaniel vs "The Ugandan Giant" Kamala w/"Number One" Paul Jones & Friday.

Unlike the previous two block A matches this one had a clear favorite as the fans rallied behind Wahoo as he took the fight to Jones's African headhunter. But no matter how much McDaniel dished out, Kamala just kept coming back for more. Eventually the popular Chief was overwhelmed and fell victim to "Air Africa".

The Fullers out heel Lightfoot to score those Starrcade points.

Congrats to Tully on a successful European tour.

Hack Sawyer is getting some buzz with his new edgier attitude.

Garvin takes down Cooley. Great display of sportsmanship. I liked the contrast of the two Starrcade Series match ups.

Jones sends a strong message as he reestablishes his army.

LOL, love how Pitbull beat a wrestler named Psycho Sid with a powerbomb. Very clever.

Credit to Wahoo for bringing the fight, but Kamala is in full beast mode right now.

Worldwide,

New generation guys like Douglas and Anderson get in good showcases.

The Mastermind has his new Stud Stable looking sharp. Good move pairing these guys together and giving the Stud Stable a fresh look.

Another solid round of Series matches coming next week.

Kamala takes control of the A block as predicted. Can anyone stop him? He looks set to take the NWA by storm if no one does. Also love to see Bill Kazmaier come away with another victory too. Shane Douglas vs Brooklyn Brawler sounded like one of those matches you would never think of but would be a hidden gem on a tape somewhere.

The honeymoon is over, back to work.

I think Cooley's win over Garvin is the bigger upset in the Block so far. Now, will he be able to move on against some of the bigger guys in the Block like a Fuller or Kamala remains to be seen.

Block B is a tough pick, almost a toss up for a winner though there should be some entertaining matches out of it.

From the Cumberland County Memorial Auditorium in Fayetteville NC.

Previously recorded airing on 9/9/88 on the USA Network.

Ring announcer/Interviews: Sean Moony.

Match #1. Starrcade Series Block B match.

"The Doctor of Desire" Tom Prichard vs "The Gatekeeper" Jimmy Golden w/"The Mastermind" Ron Fuller.

A good blend of brawling and wrestling to start the block this week. The match is pretty even when Fuller goes to intervene. Michael Hayes comes down and gets into an fistfight with Fuller. This distracts Golden causing him to walk into a Superkick giving the Doctor his first win of the tournament.

Match #2

"Crippler" Chris Benoit defeats Will Alphonso with a "Dragon" suplex.

We see  video of another Horsemen tour. This time it's World Tag Team Champions Ole Anderson and Harley Race touring Japan, defending their gold against the best teams the land of the rising sun has to offer.

Match #3

Ace's High (Johnny & Mark Ace) defeat The Appalachian Outlaws with "Pocket Rocket" on Outlaw #1.

Match #4. Starrcade Series Block B match.

The Super Destroyer w/"Number One" Paul Jones vs "The Ace" Bob Orton w/JJ Dillon

A tense feeling to this one with Jones and Dillon trading insults as their clients traded holds. Both men made several attempts at a Super-plex with the Ace ultimately staking his claim to the move as well as two more points.

Match #5

"The Latin Heartthrob" Al Perez defeats Black Cat with a bridging German suplex. Curiously Brett Sawyer was seen observing the match and seemed displeased by Perez's winning move.

We see clips of the Road Warriors and the Beasts of Burden having a number of rematches throughout the NWA's recent tours. The two teams at times seem more interested in beating each other senseless then actually winning matches.

Match #6

The Samoan Island Tribe (Fatu & Alofa) defeat Ken Handler and Bill Jenkins when Alofa pinned Jenkins with a Samoan drop.

Main Event. Starrcade Series Block B match.

"Raging Bull" Manny Fernandez vs"Gorgeous" Jimmy Garvin w/Precious

Bit of a contrast in styles with Fernandez being more of a brawler while Garvin is more a technician. They keep it clean with the finish seeing Fernandez charge Garvin in the corner only for him to move causing Manny to ram his shoulder into the post and fall to the floor. Fernandez barely beats the count but Garvin quickly puts him down with a Brainbuster for the win.

"British Magician Steve Wright defeats The Black Scorpion with the "Octopus Hold".

Non title.

NWA United States champion Col Debeers defeats The Pearl with the face first Piledriver.

Main event.

The Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal) defeat The Sheepherders (Butch Miller & Luke Williams w/"Number One" Paul Jones by DQ when the Beasts of Burden storm the ring and attack the Road Warriors!

We learn Block A will continue next week with...

Kamala vs Robert Fuller.

(Thanks to @LowBlowPodcast for convincing me to use a leaderboard. I had been toying with the idea and him asking for it settled it.)

Bob Orton and Jimmy Garvin get important wins in the Starrcade Series. I'm sure fans are already dreaming of the potential Bob Orton vs Kamala blockbuster.

The Road Warriors and Beasts of Burden continue their rivalry. Who's going to emerge from two of the best tag teams in North America clashing? Looking forward to seeing how the Starrcade Series shakes out with Kamala vs Robert Fuller on the horizon.

The leaderboard definitely helps as a reference point!

Hayes counters Fuller and Prichard picks up the points. I could get into a Freebirds/Stud Stable feud.

The Horsemen continue to ride high in the foreign lands.

The first thing I thought of in the Orton/Super D match was who was going to get their superplex in. Orton does and wins.

Seeds planted for a Perez/Hack program.

Jimmy Jam racks up more points. It could be his time.

Worldwide,

It's cool seeing Whatley still doing well in our game.

Damn, the Road Warriors, Beasts and Sheepherders in the same ring. What a sight!

Yea, love the leaderboard. Easy to keep track.

Taped at the Township Auditorium in Columbia SC.

Match #1. Starrcade Series Block A match.

"Wildcat" Wendell Cooley vs "Chief" Joe Lightfoot

We start with a match where both men are looking for their first win and the loser will be mathematically eliminated. As a result, both men go full tilt to keep their tournament dream alive. Ultimately it's Lightfoot's willingness to go to the gutter that proves the difference maker as a desperation shot from the "War club" that hands the villainous Chief his first win of the series.

Match #2

"British Magician" Steve Wright defeats The Prowler with the "Octopus Hold".

We see a video montage of Col Debeers and Junkyard Dog having a series of matches in house shows. A recurring theme is Debeers escaping with the title however he has to.

Match #3

The Stud Stable (Rod Price & Tommy Cairo) w/"The Mastermind" Ron Fuller defeat Danny Schultz and Jimmy Jarrett with a double spinebuster on Jarrett.

Match #4. Starrcade Series Block A match.

"Rugged" Ron Garvin vs "Chief" Wahoo McDaniel

It's a tale of two tournaments in this match. Garvin is 2-0 while Wahoo is 0-2. Wahoo, determined to preserve what could be his last chance at a World Title shot, fights with a fire that initially takes Garvin by surprise. There's definitely a portion of the crowd that rallies behind the underdog of the match. Garvin fires up and we get a pretty heated TV bout. Garvin goes for a sunsetflip but the experienced Wahoo grabs Garvin's legs and drops to his knees for the surprise 3 count!

Match #4

The Renegade Warriors (Chris & Mark Youngblood) defeat The Creeps with a double chop to Creep #2.

We see video highlights of Super Strong Machine and The Zero Fighters on a successful tour of Japan. We see many shots of the three receiving hero's welcomes from their countrymen.

Match #5

"Crippler" Chris Benoit defeats "Jumping" Joey Mitchell will a "Dragon suplex.

Main event. Starrcade Series Block A match.

"The Ugandan Giant" Kamala w"/Number One" Paul Jones & Friday vs "Tennessee Stud Robert Fuller w/"The Mastermind" Ron Fuller

The winner of this match becomes the unquestioned leader of block A. Ron and Jones neutralize each other throughout the match with the two eventually getting into a shoving match that gets them both ejected. Fuller tries every trick he can think of but Kamala just keeps coming. Eventually he runs out and finally falls to "Air Africa". As Friday leads him to the back, Solie hypes that Kamala seems all but unstoppable.

Originally airing on 9/17/88 on the USA Network.

On Commentary: Bob Caudle & David Crockett

Brett "Hack" Sawyer defeats B.T Express (Billy Joe Travis in a mask) with a bridging German suplex. As his hand is raised he can be heard telling the audience to "accept no imitations"

Ace's High (Johnny & Mark Ace) defeat The Brooklyn Brawler and The Mongolian Mauler with "Pocket Rocket" on Brawler.

Angel of Death defeats The Pearl with the "Death Sentence".

Main event.

"The Latin Heartthrob" Al Perez defeats Brad Anderson. Ole's still in Japan but Brad handled himself well before succumbing to a bridging German suplex. As Perez was celebrating, Brett Sawyer came up for behind and snatched Perez into a German suplex of his own! Security quickly got in the ring to prevent Sawyer from doing more damage but as he left Sawyer yelled at Perez "that's your first lesson boy!"

In other news...

The updated leaderboard for the Starrcade Series reads as follows....

Block B will continue next week with...

The Super Destroyer vs Jimmy Golden

Tom Prichard vs Manny Fernandez

Bob Orton vs Jimmy Garvin

Lightfoot stays alive and picks up the win by any means possible.

Looks like Debeers and JYD are tearing it up on the loop.

The youngsters are giving the Stud Stable some new energy.

Wahoo is an old pro and picks up some much needed points. He's still got some fuel in the tank.

Kamala is mowing down the competition. I know Tully is watching.

Worldwide,

Hack is out to prove something and he's making an example of Perez. Good story going on here.

More solid series matches coming next week. I'll be tuning in for sure.

JYD and DeBeers is a pretty good mid-card feud that has a lot of leg to it. They could just run the house show circuit and make money.

Big win for Wahoo but Kamala looks like the odds on favorite to win.

Sawyer/Perez is an interesting feud over a move. Will say that Brett's must not be all that good if he got it off on Perez by surprise and Al was able get back up and go at Sawyer.

The assumption is that they were on equal footing as security got between them rather than cutting off Sawyer or doing anything to the aggressor because Perez was unable to defend himself.
