Recommendations for 20 Crockett TV matches to watch
BrickHithouse replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Pro Wrestling
If you're missing any of those 1988 matches, a set that is coming out in a couple of weeks will cover it. /shameless plug -
Just got home from attending the Smackdown taping. I haven't watched WWE programming since 2008, but try to go to as many shows as possible when wrestling rolls through Wichita: Bo Dallas/Neville def Epico/Primo - Pretty sure this was dark. They changed the canvas after this match and a WWE "floor director" (whoever he is, he's fantastic at his job) frantically moved hundreds of people, single file, across the arena to fill seats in camera view. Then he shuffled around some of the ringside crowd. During rest holds and between matches, I watched the floor crew closely. They operate like NASCAR pit crews and are spectacular at their jobs. Not sure about this match order: Main Event: Kane vs One of the Shield guys - Schmoz ending, Usos save. Match set for SD, Usos vs Shield. Sin Cara pinned Wade Barrett clean. Non-title. This was a surprise. A guy beat Cody Rhodes in 3 minutes. Smackdown: Miz had a talk segment with Orton, Show, Del Rio, Henry, Swagger/Dutch, Sheamus. Teddy Long set the main event after this. Two of the Shield def The Usos - Match was about 3 minutes. Kofi made the save, then Kofi cut a promo and the Usos tried to get a chant going. Tensai/Brodus Clay def Prime Time Players - I like these Prime Time guys, Tons o Fun did nothing for me. Really, really short match. Chris Jericho pinned Antonio Cesaro. Fandango jumped Jericho from behind but Jericho dispatched him with no problem. The Miz def Damien Sandow - I dig the Sandow character. Kaitlyn pinned Aksana - Not good. Orton/Del Rio/Sheamus def Henry/Show/Swagger - Good finish. Del Rio was FIP for a long stretch. Mark Henry was one of the guys I most anticipated. It was good to see him but he did little in the match. Sheamus and Orton seemed to be super-over with this crowd. Show got a solid response due to his history with Wichita, but was booed by the kids.

"Bad" like the good beating England gave Australia in August 1938 at the Oval? England won by an innings and 579 runs. Although Steve Waugh's men dealt South Africa the heftiest post-War defeat in Test cricket, they would have needed to hit another 120 runs to overtake England's defeat of Don Bradman's side in August 1938. Or "Bad" like one of the worst sitcoms in history Small Wonder?

Speaking of cricketeers, Sir Donald Bradman, Sachin Tendulkar, Sir Vivian Richards, Brian Lara, and Alan Border would be in the top mix of a lot of lists, and let's not forget Shane Warne - one of the greatest leg spinners of all time. I liken those guys to Cheers, which is one of the top TV shows on my personal GOAT list.

I always thought Northern Exposure was a good, underrated show. Much like Jeff Probyn. Despite coming to Test rugby comparatively late (Probyn was actually part of England’s 1987 World Cup squad), Probyn managed to become a mainstay of the England pack well into his 36th year. Undeterred by being a small prop (approximately 95kg) Probyn was widely regarded as one of the best tight forwards in world rugby, focusing on driving on the opposition hooker.

Wrestlers are all so relentlessly full of shit, every shoot is like watching this over and over again: Lie Detector Decent for entertainment value, but I never go into one expecting to get any real information, and generally forgive the interviewer for not correcting/following up/asking decent questions since the answers are generally going to be 100% bullshit anyway. -
A worst booker thread would be pretty easy, right? On any level - subjective, objective, money lost, bad angles, etc, Russo would get the nod. Is there anyone else on Russo's level, or even in the same stratosphere?

Prefer Bossman but have seen a lot more Traylor than I have Haku. Funny, I just sat through a 3 disc Bossman comp.

I've run into it more used as a badge of honor by people who *are not* bipolar to explain away their own bullshit. Hence my quoted reference. I have empathy for those that are. I'm annoyed by those who aren't and instead self diagnose it on themselves. John I take someone claiming to be bi-polar as the new "I'm retarded" statement to explain away their own bullshit. I don't take either to be self-diagnosis, but do find myself thinking "fuck you" when I hear people throw out comments along those lines to explain away being an asshat.

Booking philosophies of match sequencing

For an example of a crowd laughing their way thru an entire card in the States, comedy or not, check out Over the Edge 98. They laugh at everything. Struck me as odd at the time. Was Milwaukee a laughing crowd in the AWA days? -

Here is some of the WWF stuff Gordon was referencing: Jake Roberts vowing revenge on Dibiase: Jake was attacked and "put out of action" with a neck injury by Dibiase on Superstars of Wrestling, May 6 1989. This was a cover for Jake needing time off to deal with assault charges. I believe he spent some time in jail, but am not sure. Rude - Warrior: Rude waited for a kiss, puckered up in mid-ring with his eyes closed. Warrior stormed the ring and attacked. This was Superstars of Wrestling June 24, 1989. Bobby Heenan leaving the announce booth: This was a little storyline on Challenge between the announcers. Gorilla and Heenan were having problems, including Gorilla leaving Heenan to announce by himself a week or two before. Gorilla brought in Schiavone as a third announcer and Heenan quit the show, jealous of Schiavone. (I've never actually seen this, but there was a picture and small article about it in a WWF Magazine). Somewhat surprising that Gordon stuck to the WWF storyline when "reporting" these incidents. The Jake Roberts stuff especially was a golden opportunity for him to tell us what was really going on. Well, I guess it was 1989 and not 1999. Gordon's biting commentary and personal opinion gets "better" over time. He'll say something like "This is just my opinion, the Black Scorpion is one mysterious individual". As for the Clash - to this day I haven't seen the entire show aside from the Main Event. A personal story, if you will: When I was 11, my dad begrudgingly took me to my first live WWF show on November 1. Unbeknownst to us, it was a 4 hour Challenge/Survivor Series Showdown taping in the middle of a work/school week. My dad pretty much lost his shit due to the length of this show and imposed a wrestling moratorium in a last-ditch effort to get me to stop watching wrestling and focus on other sports. Suffice to say it didn't work. So...long story short, this Clash was banned in our house and i have yet to see the show. The wrestling ban in our house lasted until around Christmas when my dad finally, once and for all, threw his hands up in resignation. How many people were lined up to meet Dibiase? -
This is likely very accurate. Wasn't Bill Watts doing pretty much the same thing in Mid-South? He'd set the direction, but always (or a lot of the time) had a booker on hand like Bill Dundee, Ken Mantel, and whoever else to fill in the gaps. Exactly how much and what was actually booked by Pat Patterson, George Scott, etc, seems difficult to get to the bottom of. (edit - Nevermind, what Johnny says )

Is it true that Ace's main function in All Japan was to bang Baba's wife? Sorry if it's been brought up before and discussed extensively. -
No! The official/unofficial 78k for WM3 is total bullshit. Leaning against purchasing 29 after reading thru this thread, but there will probably be no other way to get the HOF stuff. Wish they'd put it out on a separate release.

Post-stroke, there's bound to be some deterioration. Academically speaking, let's not forget Jim Ross's excessive mentions of Luger's 3.78 GPA. -
I was kind of on the fence about getting this. Not a big ECW fan to begin with, but reading what's been said about it from people that have it, I will be definitely be ordering. Excited to see it now.

It's a helluva lot more fun to read about now compared to trying to sit through it back in the day.

Is there a general consensus on the Bash 88 Triple Tower of Doom match? Do people here tend to like or dislike this match? -
As far as FO goes, I was glad to see Barnwell go. Mike Tanier is the guy I miss. Seems FO has taken a dive the past couple of years without those two, but it might just be my perception.

Have been watching a lot of 1988 NWA TV lately. Lots of Dusty. His frequent appearances and promos on various shows reminded me of what my dad said about him back in the day: "That lardass must be their version of Hogan".
