  1. HBK defending IC title against Duggan next week. Cheap heat on NYC. No Sherri. Clips of HBK attacking Perfect after Mania. Officials hold Perfect back allowing HBK to get in a cheapshot kick, and Perfect chases him off. Fun promo.
  2. They're riding into the WWF to face the good, the bad and the ugly. But not again on the '93 yearbook.
  3. Prety big crowd here. I thought this was one of the better WWF matches of the year so far. Bigelow sends Hart out with a shoulderblock while Hart returns the favor. Bigelow posts Hart's back and continues his attack on it with a bearhug and Sammartino backbreaker. This was a really simple match but I thought it was very well focused and both excelled in their roles. Hart teases a comeback by scoring a back suplex but he's too worn down to capitalize. Bigelow eventually misses the headbutt which sees Bret work towards the sharpshooter, which is blocked, before the pinfall. Very fun match. ***1/2 Loss touched on it above, but in going through the yearbooks I'm not seeing much that makes a case for Hart as any type of GOAT candidate. I'm sure he'll make my top 100, but I can't see him finishing very highly. Just not a ton of stellar matches.

I think bringing HHH & Steph back is necessary for Mania season as they're solid characters who can factor into numerous storylines that unfortunately simply would languish without them. That being said, this felt like an incredibly weak way to get there as I'd rather it be teased and dragged out for a couple weeks. At least save their first return appearance for the next show and try to build some intrigue there rather than drop it 11:15. On the other hand, DANIEL BRYAN. For whatever reason he makes a mark out of me and many others. People genuinely like him and you get excited and invested in his storylines and seeing him perform. That's otherwise wholly absent and has been pretty much since he went on the shelf. If 1997 Shawn Michaels had this guy on his TV he'd know where to find his smile. I'm cautiously optimistic he's winning the Rumble, but could see other scenarios play out. As long as he's a featured player the show will be a lot more interesting on a week to week basis. I'm happy to have that. If they do run with him this year, its also probably for the best as it'll give Reigns a chance to develop in the ring and on the mic before trying to crown him again next year when he'll hopefully look ready for the part and have people genuinely excited rather than curious about it. The Rollins match last night did zero favors for either but hopefully they can heat it up enough to have that be a hot match going into Mania. A Mania with Bryan/Brock, Cena/Rusev, HHH/Sting and Rollins/Reigns sounds pretty damn fun, and that's leaving aside whatever walking dead/true blood nonsense they conjure up for Bray, along with spots for Ziggler, Ambrose and the inevitable, slow burning Miz/Mizdow.
  5. Thanks for the heads up. This will happen.

The Ryback bit was a lot better when I heard it on Jericho's podcast and I have to think would've gotten over more if delivered as part of a sit down interview rather than in this format. But it was still different from the standard fare, and while the crowd seemed to drift, they popped at the parts designed for it so maybe it has a chance. On another note, Lawler just teased Bryan retiring which means I am now very, very stoked for that part of the show.

So originally I was sure that we were getting some very disappointing news about Bryan because you wouldn't run a presumably hot angle on a holiday week Raw. But if they're opening with a package recapping Edge's retirement due to injury, I can't imagine letting that overshadow Bryan. Not that my guess is worth a damn, but I'm at least optimistic now.
  8. Cactus bodyslams Race prematch and they start brawling outside the ring. Cactus nails him with a chair, while Harley goes up for another bodyslam on the floor and Cactus's elbow. What a trooper. Stiff punches by Cactus, back suplex then Vader catches him coming off ropes for big slam. Hits a couple Vader bombs with punches mixed in, then a dumb spot where he tries to jump feet first on Cactus who obviously rolls away. Cactus goes for a somersault dive but Vader rolls away and Cactus gets the floor. Vader powerbombs him on the concrete floor, which I somehow thought looked reasonably safe given what it was. Cactus is counted out, then stretchered out. Brutal, but more disjointed than the first match. ***1/4
  9. Cactus with 27 stitches following last week's match with Vader where he had the worst beating of his life.
  10. Pre-surgery, Tammy is very pretty and well spoken. Of the New England Sytches, who everyone should've heard of. Filed a sexual discrimination suit against SMW for not employing women. She goes to Wellesley, just like Hillary Clinton did. She'll start as manager, and maybe onto promoting, then commissioner. I already enjoy her more than Cornette.
  11. Gorilla recaps Luger KO'ing Hart at Mania press conference. Xrays show Luger has a steel plate in his forearm following a motorcycle accident.
  12. Lots of punching by both, but nothing too great here. I suppose it plays well for a studio match. Rex King & Steve Doll in to attack Jarrett, Billy Joe Travis seemed to be waiting for the run in and they attack him as well. Pretty poorly done. Lawler eventually saves.
  13. Promo that seems to focus on softball while including a brief mention for a Monday night show and Sherri.
  14. Rewatched the finish of Lesnar/Taker today. Very comfortable saying I've never seen a crowd that shocked at a finish. They weren't yawning after that last F-5, but were simply waiting for something else to bridge things to Undertaker winning. Then he lost and it was the wrestling version of Chris Webber calling a timeout he didn't have, Charles Smith blowing 4 layups or Leon Lett. Just incredible. Were the announcers tipped to the finish before it happened or no?
  15. There was plenty of good to be found in 1993 WCW if you're cherry picking. But on a week to week basis its not hard to see why that TV was excruciating.

Off the top of my head, a few I enjoyed include the PPV matches with Cena and Hardy, Michaels on Raw, Undertaker at Mania and Summerslam, Orton on Raw during the rated RKO period and the Backlash '07 four way, I also loved his out of ring work on Smackdown for most of the time he was on top there. One of my favorite characters.
  17. Han is ridiculous. Everything is so smooth, fluid and just looks so natural. But I'm not breaking any ground here. Between his varied strikes and seemingly endless ability to go for submissions that don't look at all ridiculous you get a nice look at what Han can do. Fun and original match that probably plays better on a yearbook than on a show of similar action. ***1/2
  18. While I often wish for Toyota to slow down and let things breathe a little, this was neither here nor there. Action and offense were strong, but it all just kind of fell together and wasn't in any way coherent which resulted in my finding this just good. Also not in love with Kyoko as she seems to be a less athletic & dynamic Toyota with the volume turned down. Not that that's necessarily bad, but you only need so much of that. I liked Kong planting Hotta & Toyota in opposite corners and splashing both. Hotta with a stiff jumping piledriver on Kong was great. They love piledrivers here. More Hotta would've been hotter. Har har. ***1/4
  19. Gilbert blindsides Funk with a chair shot. Gilbert's then in a match where he was bloody and Funk comes and lays him out with a chair. Funk then with a promo wanting to go at Gilbert. Solid set up for that feud.
  20. Bret talks about people counting him down and out but he's coming back. Looking for Luger first, who attacked him right before Mania. This feels a bit awkward and Bret seems uncomfortable on the mic. Also mentions Yoko & Hogan, suggesting something there was in the cards for Summerslam.
  21. Basically punching and a blade job by Lawler. Nothing special here but its no worse than their stuff from the 80s. Then we get to the highlight as Sherri climbs the cage during Lawler's comeback and she interferes for a cage match DQ. A couple low blows before he ducks a shot and she nails Savage and he rips her dress off.
  22. Windham working hammerlock and grinding his forearm into Regal's shoulder and tricep is great, and then bodyslams Regal onto the bad arm. Regal eventually turns the tables and goes after Windham's arm. Good, stiff fun here and Regal's selling is a nice and different look for WCW. As great the limb work was, I wish it was more a part of the entire match rather than just an isolated segment that didn't really go anywhere. This was really good for the time they had and left you wanting more. ***1/4
  23. Bull's probably my favorite joshi star, and I like Devil quite a bit as well so I enjoyed this. But it was too much of a good thing. There's only so long I want to see Bull Nakano working holds on the mat, even if she's competent at it. Going this long I understand why they mixed things up so much, as you had the matwork, suplexes & slams, stomping fingers, brawling on the floor, the whole gamut. Devil bridges out of a moonsault and I won't tolerate that anymore from her than Toyota. I'm usually not as sensitive to long finishing runs that some folks find repetitive, but this one was too much. That being said, everything they did was solid and they had a goal of going this long and it was nice to see them so happy with what they accomplished afterwards. Not bad, just not what you wanted. ***1/2
  24. I still enjoy the Sabu character. Some fun spots from Sabu throughout and Kid spilled some solid blood, but it felt like they took the long road to get where they were going, which was highspots and blood. A more compact version would've been a lot better. **3/4
  25. I love Vader hop stepping. Vader just laying it in with his strikes. Cactus catches Vader and slams him, then a top rope lariat and it goes to the floor for more rapid fire violence. Cactus is busted open and his face a mess from all the stiff shots. Vader sends Cactus to the floor but misses a splash on the railing that lets Cactus win via countout. More brutal than New Japan vs. WAR but not as heated or dramatic. Still, great pace here and didn't leave you time to blink. I slightly preferred it to the rematch which was a little more cartoonish. ***1/2
