[2016-01-03-DDT] Isami Kodaka vs Konosuke Takeshita
Bierschwale replied to Loss's topic in January 2016
Absolutely loved this match. Takeshita is already one of the top heavyweights (well, he's tall in a promotion of short guys even he's still underweight) in Japan at 20, and Kodaka was legitimately Rey-like. -
The selling gave the match a really great sense of finality, which I love as storytelling with the Homenaje coming up, the anniversary of their first classic. SIX excellent big matches (mask vs. mask at Homenaje, the Puebla title match in July, the Arena MX title matches in August & December, Fantasticamania, and then Friday's) in one year. Can't do much more than that.

Thirded, thought that Martinez was awesome as Super Mesias and that Lio just totally shined.

8/17/91 AIW Raw Power (live on WGN) Calihan Hall Detroit, MI D) Danny Boy Collins & Fit Finlay vs. Lord Steven Regal & Dave Taylor ends in a time-limit draw (10:00) D) Dean Malenko & Joe Malenko defeat Sabu & Rob Zakowski via submission after Dean Malenko applied a Texas Cloverleaf on Zakowski (6:04) 1) Eddie Guerrero & Owen Hart defeat Doug Furnas & Dan Kroffat via submission after Hart applied a Scorpion Deathlock on Kroffat (11:13) 2) The Lightning Kid & Jerry Lynn defeat Chavo Guerrero & Tommy Rogers via pinfall by Lynn on Rogers after a failed attempt at a Fantastic Flip when Lynn got his knees up, stunning Rogers long enough to apply an inside cradle (8:21) 3) Debbie Malenko & Desiree Petersen defeat Esther Moreno & Mariko Yoshida via submission after Malenko applied a Fujiwara armbar on Yoshida (5:42) 4) Wayne Shamrock vs. Victor Zangiev ends in a no contest after first Takayuki Iizuka and then Boris Zhukov interfered; Iizuka left the crowd to attack Shamrock as Shamrock attempted to apply an ankle lock on Zangiev, but before the referee could officially call the match as finished, Zhukov ran out from the back to assist Iizuka in his beatdown, which only provoked Iizuka & Zangiev to attack him; AIW Commissioner Adrian Street said that he couldn't suspend either Iizuka who was a guest of New Japan Pro Wrestling, or Zhukov who intended his attack to come after the match had concluded. Commissioner Street guaranteed that there would be another Shamrock-Zangiev match within the next thirty days, though he could not specify if it would take place at the next live show, AIW Uncontrollable Urge, in Chicago on 9/8 (4:31) 5) Bob Backlund, Doug Gilbert, Eddie Gilbert, Bob Holly, & Steve Williams defeat Terry Funk, Terry Gordy, Jeff Jarrett, Paul Orndorff, & John Tatum via pinfall by Williams on Jarrett after a backdrop suplex followed by a knee drop by Backlund (12:44) 6) Rick Rude (w/ The Lightning Kid & Jerry Lynn) defeats Chris Benoit (w/ Eddie Guerrero & Owen Hart) in a 2/3 falls match to retain the AIW Heavyweight Championship; Benoit won the first fall via DQ after a low blow by Rude (4:11), Rude won the second fall via pinfall after a sunset flip (10:27), Rude won the third and deciding fall via pinfall after ducking away from a diving headbutt attempt by Benoit and catching the rising Benoit in a front headlock to hit a Rude Awakening (18:24); as Guerrero & Hart picked Benoit up to carry him to the back, the three Gold Club members jumped them and the tag title tournament final immediately started (18:24) 7) Eddie Guerrero & Owen Hart (w/ Chris Benoit) defeat The Lightning Kid & Jerry Lynn (w/ Rick Rude) in a 2/3 falls match to become the first-ever AIW Tag Team Champions; the Kid & Lynn won the first fall via pinfall on Hart & Guerrero respectively after dueling Tombstone piledrivers (6:08), Guerrero & Hart won the second fall via pinfall by Hart on Lynn after a Gory Bomb/top rope bulldog combination (15:23), Guerrero & Hart APPEARED to win the final fall after Guerrero pinned the Kid following a brainbuster, but the Kid got his foot on the bottom rope at a two count (19:12), the Kid & Lynn APPEARED to win the final fall after Lynn caught Guerrero with an O'Connor roll, but Rick Rude inadvertently distracted the referee by hitting a prone Chris Benoit with a chair on the outside of the ring and Guerrero was able to kick out after a visual near-three count (21:50), Guerrero and Hart won the third and deciding fall via pinfall by Hart on the Kid after a sunset flip powerbomb/moonsault combination (24:34); Lynn was unable to break up the pin as he was held up by Rude, who chastised him for not having gotten the previous pin on Guerrero while the referee made the count on the Kid (24:34) 8) Bam Bam Bigelow (w/ Doug Gilbert & Eddie Gilbert) defeats Cactus Jack (w/ Terry Funk & Terry Gordy) in a Loser Leaves Town cage match via pinfall after a diving headbutt standing on two unfolded chairs placed on the top rope; Bigelow broke the canvas and snapped the board directly under himself and Jack, so that Bigelow had to pull him out of the indent before pinning him. The referee opened the cage door and all four accompanying wrestlers ran in, continuing to fight within the cage as live TV time expired (10:05) -
Who from the 2006 SC poll do you see not ranking at all this time?
Bierschwale replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in 2016
He's only 98th to start, but it would be a legitimate shame if Togo didn't make it, after having his true career peak four/five years after the original list. I do think that he'll make it, but it struck me as worth pointing out. -

July 27-August 17, 12:59 PM Central Time 7/26/91 AIW Transmission TV (for 7/27/91 on WGN) Milwaukee Auditorium Milwaukee, WI X) AIW Commissioner Adrian Street announces that after the final two matches in the first round of the AIW Tag Team Championship tournament, a battle royal will be held to fill the vacancy left by the no contest in the Bigelow/Shamrock-Malenko Bros. match, consisting of any tournament entrant to have not been disqualified or taken a pinfall in the first round, with the final two men earning the right to continue in the tournament 1) The Lightning Kid & Jerry Lynn defeat Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers via pinfall by the Kid after a powerbomb/senton bomb combination to Fulton (13:51) 2) Doug Furnas defeats Brian Costello after a powerslam (4:09) 3) Eddie Guerrero & Owen Hart defeat Danny Boy Collins & Dave Taylor via pinfall by Hart after a superplex/moonsault press combination to Collins (13:41) 4) Chavo Guerrero & Tommy Rogers win a battle royal to earn the right to stay in the tag team tournament, defeating (in order of elimination) Scott Anthony, Brian Christopher, Dean Malenko, Chris Chavis, Joe Malenko, and Dave Taylor; Guerrero walks away before his arm can be raised, still showing anger towards Rogers from the Guerreros' rivalry with The Fantastics (5:13) 7/31/91 AIW Transmission TV (for 8/3/91 on WGN) West Bradley Place Chicago, IL 1) Chavo Guerrero & Tommy Rogers defeat Terry Funk & Jeff Jarrett via pinfall after a schoolboy rollup by Rogers on Jarrett; Guerrero & Rogers are joined by their original partners after the match and all four men stand in respect despite former hostilities (9:57) 2) John Tatum defeats Barry Houston via pinfall after an eyerake followed by a California Kick (4:46) 3) Chris Candido defeats Boris Zhukov via pinfall after an inside cradle when Zhukov was distracted by arguing with the referee after refusing to break an armbar; after the match, Zhukov kicked and stomped Candido while asking for Victor Zangiev to come down to the ring; Zangiev appeared at the top of the entrance way and simply stared at Zhukov while shaking his head (3:03) 4) The Lightning Kid & Jerry Lynn defeat Misterioso & Volador via pinfall after a guillotine leg drop by the Kid on Volador (17:52) 7/31/91 AIW Transmission TV (for 8/10/91 on WGN) West Bradley Place Chicago, IL 1) Eddie Guerrero & Owen Hart defeat Chris Youngblood & Mark Youngblood via submission after Guerrero applied a modified Gory Special on Chris Youngblood (8:44) 2) Bam Bam Bigelow defeats Chris Chavis via pinfall after a brainbuster (7:15) X) The Gold Club comes down to the ring, with leader Rick Rude announcing that with the expulsion of Brad Rheingans following his suspension, that the Club would need a new member. That new member turned out to be Paul Orndorff, but the induction ceremony came to a hasty end as Bob Holly, wearing a neckbrace after Orndorff's attack at Add It Up, charged the ring. The four Gold Club members put the boots to Holly until Chris Benoit and Steve Williams cleared the ring; AIW Commissioner Adrian Street would later announce that a tag team match putting the team of Benoit & Holly against the team of Orndorff & Rude would be next week's main event. 3) The Great Kokina defeats Brian Christopher via pinfall after a Banzai drop (2:41) 4) Doug Furnas & Dan Kroffat defeat Doug Gilbert & Eddie Gilbert via pinfall by Kroffat on Doug Gilbert after a double shoulder tackle followed by a Tiger Driver; Terry Funk and Jeff Jarrett came to the ring shortly after the match began in order to bait the Gilbert brothers, but wisely avoided making actual contact with either one with the threat of suspension over their heads, and were able to provide the final distraction that allowed for the pin as Jarrett drew Eddie Gilbert out of the ring and allowed for the Can-Am Express's double team attack (10:02) 5) Cactus Jack defeats Terry Gordy via DQ after Gordy hit Jack with a steel chair, at Jack's request. The tag team tournament quarterfinal was the originally scheduled main event, but after its conclusion, Terry Funk and Jeff Jarrett stayed behind, claiming that they had "Cartel business to take care of". The result was the founding Cartel members, Gordy and Jack, coming to the ring and demanding a match against each other. Jack claimed that he had something to prove and that Gordy was the only one whom he fully trusted to carry it out, at which point the two immediately started exchanging punches, with Jack screaming that he "[NEEDED] MORE, I NEED MORE" after every time that Gordy hesitated to hit him. Jack was bloodied by the end of the match, and needed Funk and Jarrett to carry him from the ring, but not before declaring to Bam Bam Bigelow that "if this is what [i'll] do to myself, imagine what I will do to you", and demanding that Commissioner Street make their Loser Leaves Town match at Raw Power a cage match (6:15) 7/31/91 AIW Transmission TV (for 8/17/91 on WGN) West Bradley Place Chicago, IL 1) Mariko Yoshida defeats Desiree Petersen via pinfall with a Magistral (7:41) X) Bam Bam Bigelow came to the ring and agreed to Cactus Jack's challenge for a cage match, because the only thing that it could do is isolate Jack from his running buddies in The Cartel, and the Gilberts will still have his back either way 2) Bobby Fulton & Hector Guerrero defeat Warren Bianchi & Kevin Krueger via pinfall by Fulton on Krueger after a double elbow drop; the other mix of the Fantastics and Guerreros seemed to be on good terms (2:02) 3) Danny Boy Collins, Fit Finlay, & Dave Taylor defeat Dean Malenko, Joe Malenko, & Norman Smiley via pinfall by Taylor on Joe Malenko after a British Suplex (11:26) 4) Wayne Shamrock defeats Scott Anthony via submission with an ankle lock; Victor Zangiev came out after the match, and stood at the top of the ramp, giving Shamrock mild applause for his victory (1:19) 5) Paul Orndorff & Rick Rude (w/ The Lightning Kid & Jerry Lynn) defeat Chris Benoit & Bob Holly (w/ Eddie Guerrero & Owen Hart) via pinfall by Rude on Holly after a Rude Awakening; both accompanying teams couldn't stop themselves and battled with words and eventually punches during the duration of the match, distracting the referee enough that it allowed John Tatum to escape from the back and hit Holly from behind with a California Kick, who fell into the awaiting hands of Rude. After the match, Rude proclaimed Tatum to be "California Gold", indicating that he would become the newest member of The Gold Club (12:03) -
Really waiting for the mid-Feb posts. I think that CMLL had three legitimate MOTYC-level matches in a five day span (the Team Casas-Team Volador trios, Dorada-Mephisto, and Silueta-Zeuxis).
-
At least Thunder's hurt. And they still have Marco-Mascara to build a good trios.
-
Shootstyle as a gateway for pro wrestlers to start taking up shoot fighting? In addition to how it exposed the business within Japan. I think that that's kind of a tenuous view but it's different from making All Japan the big scapegoat.
-
Remember when Brock used to actually take bumps in his original run? Holy shit, was he a great bumper.
-
Ambrose-Reigns was far better than Cena-Rollins in terms of the "Brock's taking a powder right now" matchup within the triple threat, and it meant no Michaels cosplay, even if there was the lack of foolwrecking that came with J&J. Great, great pace, too.
-
I like that Heyman's blatant misogyny against Lilian is canon.
-
People really need to watch Necro's IGF stuff.
-
Lee and the Harris Brothers were Jarrett's guys. Then Prentice's crew (Flanagan & Wolfie, plus Chris Michaels, the Hot Shots and eventually AMW) and Behrens's Wildside guys (AJ, Rick Michaels, David Young, Killings) and I assume that he was behind most of the Northeast indie guys. Jorge Estrada & Sonny Siaki were Dusty's from TCW. Looking stuff up, I had no clue that Monty Brown was a Sabu trainee.
-
Bischoff was big on Dragon, wasn't he? Of course, Bischoff's in McMahonistan at this point so he (plus Mike Modest, and Daniels to a lesser extent because he wasn't brought in full-time until early 2003) lost their advocate.
-
Bold statement: Super Dragon is way more awesome than Brian Lee. Love Styles-Togo coming up, too, of course. Dragon/Hash/Togo all on one show? This is a Black Terry-Bill Dundee match away from being Phil Schneider Promotions. The FOURTH MAN is interesting, too, of course. It can't be anyone who clearly overshadows Corino but still someone credible. I wouldn't say who I'm guessing, but he'd make a good amount of sense in a Horseman-esque group and was around a lot in RL TNA.
-
I think that Sid's pure magnetism is unparalleled. He couldn't sustain it, though MAYBE he could have with a long-term face push, but whenever Sid has debuted, people just always turn their heads.
-
Ambrose's US title return match, right? I legitimately think that Meltzer goes ***** on that exact same match if you change Ambrose-Sheamus © on SmackDown to Ishii-Makabe © at Dominion.

JvK reviews pimped matches from late 90s-10s
Bierschwale replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Megathread archive
The video says that it was taped in Jackson. Did Power Pro/MCW ever actually run out of the Coliseum? I'd love to be wrong. -
Well... Dillinger's knee injury makes him questionable, but Itami will be back by then either way. Gable's sub-205. So are Enzo & Xavier, though they seem less likely to be in it. I think that Breeze is only a pound or two over and can easily be a kayfabe 205. Kendrick's apparently rumored as wanting to work in it; don't know about Jacobs, but if he's going to wrestle for WWE, this is a perfect opportunity to use him. So that's a decent amount of contract guys. And then there's no real point in not counting Gargano and Hollis/Skyler as non-regulars.

JvK reviews pimped matches from late 90s-10s
Bierschwale replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Megathread archive
Bryan's last ever singles match against Sheamus is pretty awesome, too. Important for role consideration, Bryan-Regal in a high school gym for Memphis TV in 2001. I think that you're out on Regal, but there's nothing to lose by seeing Bryan as a 19 year-old pulling out his tricks for a classic audience. -
The best way for a new heel (who stays a heel) to make it would be to make it clear that they don't really like wrestling and only treat it as work. It was never their dream. It's just something that they're good at doing that can pay pretty well. Embassy-era Jimmy Rave to its most extreme. Hell, don't even have them interact with fans, because that's not really part of the "job description". If Bryan's retirement was the greatest RAW segment ever, then a true heel has to be the antithesis of everything that he said in his address. One of our esteemed PWOers, either Dylan or Loss, said it on Twitter; nobody cares more about "respecting the business" than smarks.
