[1990-09-05-NWA-Clash of the Champions XII] Sting vs Black Scorpion
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
So I'd never seen it before and I could have told you that the "first" Scorpion was not the guy in the interviews or whatnot. The post-match Scorpion looked a little better, but really, Sting was shocked at this? Ole must have really had a bone to pick with the NWA's booking at this point. -
[1990-09-01-USWA-Memphis TV] Eddie Gilbert goes for a drive
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
Sick and ultimately unnecessary bump by Lawler, but the guy loved the big bumps so I doubt he was going to be dissuaded. How he wasn't more hurt than he was is beyond me. -
On rewatch, this time for the overall 1990, this comes in just a little short of my favorite MX vs. RnR and Dandy vs. Azteca. HOWEVER...it still completely and totally rules. Taue and Kawada start building the hate, which I have been waiting for since they both showed up in 90. Their tag team is my favorite of all time and I'd rather see them together. But damn when Kawada just starts wailing away on Taue it's almost as fun. The above mentioned sequence with Kawada ducking a lariat, leveling Jumbo and tagging in a FIRED UP Misawa was beautiful in ways you just don't see often in a pro wrestling ring. Jumbo's early work on Misawa's ribs was vicious and great. Fuchi lives up to the "MF" on his tights working over Kobashi's nose for sure. Kobashi really establishes himself here as somebody to watch. He's shown flashes of it, but he really and truly shines in this match. Taue continues to grow and really feels like he belongs in this match. One thing I do have to say here is that under 5 months ago, these guys were all midcarders (besides Jumbo) with no real great prospects for the future. And here they are putting on a match as well-executed as you'll see anywhere in the world. It's a real testament to how far the 4 Pillars have come in that time. Fuchi surely had this in him all along, he was never called on to do it until now. But to me this match shows some insane progress from Taue, Kobashi, Kawada and Misawa.

I have a theory about Kikuchi. He doesn't have neck bones like the rest of us. He's got some kind of super-resilient rubbery substance that always snaps back into place regardless of impact or how it's bent. Anyway, great midcard AJPW spotfest tag. Fantastics and Can Ams always knocked these out of the park.

[1990-09-01-AJPW-Summer Action Series II] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Jumbo Tsuruta
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in September 1990
Hard to say any more about this than has been already said. If the 6/8 match was Misawa's match, this was Jumbo's match in answer to that. Not that Misawa (or Jumbo the first time around) is not represented, but this match is about Jumbo staving off Misawa's challenge. And Misawa definitely delivers on a level that Jumbo is threatened, which is pretty amazing when you think that just over 3 months ago he was meandering around the midcard as Tiger Mask.- 22 replies

[1990-08-31-USWA Texas] Jerry Lawler & Bill Dundee vs Gary Young & John Tatum

Fun tag match with Lawler and Dundee working in their comedy spots really well. I have to agree that Tatum was perfect for this kind of thing.- 7 replies

[1990-08-31-USWA Texas] Steve Austin & Jeannie Clark vs Chris & Toni Adams

Good ending to the feud, but I'm not sure the Adams and CVE got near enough payback for the months of humiliation that got them there.- 7 replies

Percy in the dress is just ridiculous, but it works. More heels getting way more on the babyfaces than they ought to in Dallas.- 9 replies

Easily the match of the show. When you're competing against warrior/Rude and a way overbooked Harts/Demo that's not saying much, but this match was way better than expected. I think the rap on Hogan is at least somewhat undeserved. He could work enough to make matches like this work, even dragged something not awful out of Warrior at Mania.

One thing that gets me about some of these NJ juniors matches the more I watch them is the lack of emotion when it's not a rivalry. Once you get to somebody like Koji or Ohtani being a dick to Liger and the response, these matches can get really great. But when it's this kind of match, incredibly well-executed for the most part, cutting edge and fast-paced, but without any real emotion from either guy it loses a lot. That being said, the work was terrific as you would expect from these two.

I think a lot of the time we look for "great" when we see a match like this. We hope we're going to see A-level performances that blow us away each and every time out because of the names. But sometimes you "only" get very good. And this is one of those times. Choshu's comeback is still incredible even if the match that led up to it could have used a little sprucing up. Maybe that takes away from Choshu's comeback though.

Fun match with Lex again disproving the idea that he was never a worker. The more 1990 wrestling I watch the more I think Lex was just in bad with the boys backstage and his name is mud because of it.

[1990-08-25-USWA-Memphis TV] Eddie Gilbert vs Cowabunga
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1990
Eddie Gilbert should not have been involved here, but it kind of makes sense with Kowabunga's obsession with Jerry Lawler. Perfectly fine comedy match but I agree that Gilbert should not look this weak. -
This match was so drab it was hard to really get into it. They never really got into anything overly interesting outside of the whole elbow pad thing. And that never made it past the round it happened in.

1990 is making me into a Bobby Eaton fan for sure. Could have used a lot more in this match, but it wasn't a BAD match. -
[1990-08-31-NWA-Power Hour] Louisville Slugger: Sting & Black Scorpion
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1990
I was wondering if it stood out to anyone how obvious it was that Ole was voicing the Black Scorpion. Anyway, kudos to Ole for more awful booking. Was his intent to dig the NWA into a massive hole they could never quite recover from? Because it seems like it worked. -

[1990-08-25-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Interview: Four Horsemen
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1990
Flair can sell me on just about anything I'm sure. No way I would have believed he could sell me a rematch with Luger for the U.S. belt is important, but Flair does it incredibly well. Imagine what he's be able to do with solid booking. Not that he's going to get that ever again in WCW. -
[1990-08-24-NWA-Power Hour] Louisville Slugger: Ric Flair

Flair is in the middle of so much stuff right now. Ole's booking is mind-boggling.
