[1991-11-05-NJPW-3 Days Battle] Riki Choshu vs Shinya Hashimoto
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in November 1991
One thing about both of these guys is everything does feel big. The fact they had the crowd at all after that opening is due to that. Once Hash went through his big moves and Riki took over i expected another hash comeback, but literally all I got was lariats. Hash looks like a super tough dude despite losing, so I guess mission accomplished. But I can think of better ways of accomplishing it.- 7 replies

I liked this match. Even with the odd babyface team of Zenk, Borne the Logger and Dustin. Dustin does a pretty good FIP. Ricky Morton continues to be a much better heel than one would ever expect. Makes you wonder if he couldn't have gone better places if this had happened let's say 5 years earlier. I really enjoyed the finish as well, seeing the heels get their come-uppance like that always puts a smile on my face.

[1991-11-03-WWF-Wrestling Challenge] Barber Shop: Hulk Hogan
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in November 1991
Standard fare from Hulk, which is to say I didn't care for it. I'm not thrilled at the feud overlap, but it seems like they did that with Warrior for a while too. Teddy also had some of that going on as well. -
[1991-11-03-WWF-Wrestling Challenge] Ultimate Warrior Slim Jim Commercial
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in November 1991
It's crazy to me that this ever aired. But awesome in a purely humorous way as well. -
I liked this match quite a bit. It had some issues that almost took me out of it, but they kept going back to the overarching themes enough to hook me back in. Shinobu was really, really good at selling the arm injury and changing his offense as the match went on. http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/21900-kengo-mashimo-madoka-vs-mens-teoh-shinobu-bjpw-052308/

I'm not familiar with anyone but Teioh. Madoka is the only guy in the match with natural colored hair, but I still get the feeling he is one of the heels. Teioh and Mashimo seem to be an issue, as do Madoka and Shinobu. I liked the early exchange between Teioh and Mashimo a lot. Teioh was using veteran/technical tricks to get out of Mashimo's offense designed to overpower him and it really worked for me. madoka and Shinobu seem like pretty standard juniors of the time period on offense. Shinobu has a nice dropkick. I really liked how they went to the injured shoulder of Shinobu and he sold it pretty well up until the very, very end where he reeled off a few things that he could have sold after but didn't. For the most part he does a great job changing his offense and selling though. The not-really hot tag to Teioh was fun with Teioh again tricking his younger opponents and throwing great punches to boot. Going back to Shinobu's shoulder for a second, shorter heat was a nice touch too. I loved the Teioh stuff with the octopus hold too. The run of nearfalls was hot, but I thought they got away from the bulk of the match somewhat to do it. Finish goes back to the rest of the match, which does make me happy. I thought this was a good tag with some flaws but a lot of good work. Mashimo is good as the "big" junior and wrestles with the appropriate attitude. He also has pretty good heel mannerisms. Madoka I can take or leave because I'm pretty sure there were about 200 of him in Japan at the time. Shinobu showed me a lot with his selling. Teioh really knows how to play his role well and I dig him as a wrestler even past his prime.

[1991-11-03-PWFG] Jerry Flynn vs Wellington Wilkins Jr
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in November 1991
I liked this for the same reasons as soup. Flynn had the clear advantage at range with his kicks and longer reach. So he uses that to keep Wilkins at bay for a bit. Wilkins is able to weather the storm and get inside where he has the advantage and get some offense in on Flynn. Flynn gets tired and Wilkins has an easier time getting in. Once Flynn gets his second wind it's desperation time for Wilkins as he's been knocked down 4 times and he's just barely avoiding it. Just as you think he might find a way to get inside and make it count he eats the right combo from Flynn to put him away. It really does work from both a story standpoint and a fighting standpoint.- 8 replies

[1991-11-02-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Jerry Lawler
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in November 1991
This is all we get from a week of Memphis? Lawler is hyping a match with...oh yeah Jeff Gaylord. If Gaylord really wanted to beat Lawler he'd challenge him to a pushup contest or something. Otherwise he'd know better despite being a complete musclehead. This must have been one Hell of a waste of a Saturday morning. -
[1991-11-02-WWF-Superstars] Funeral Parlor: The Undertaker
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in November 1991
Not sure why you would go from Hogan talking about flair to Undertaker talking about his match with Hogan, but that's the only thing wrong with this. Really well carried off for a guy as young as 'Taker was here. -
[1991-11-02-WWF-Superstars] Bret Hart and The Mountie
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in November 1991
Really well-done angle. The water was a really ingenious idea and it surprised me. -
I liked this match a lot. Harley tried getting off to a fast start, and we see why when she just takes a beating once Kansai is on offense. I thought Harley was an opportunist the whole way through, having to rely on clever takedowns to set up attacking Kansai on the ground and do some real damage. Kansai gets past that and it looks like Harley is finished, but one mistake turns the die in a big way. Really good match with natural transitions and a finishing sequence that doesn't go way too far. I could do with more selling of the leg for a few minutes after the focus by both, but that's a small quibble and one that can be pointed at a lot of matches.

Jeff Jarrett is going to be putting on some wrestling boots soon. It's piss off the heel manager night for Jerry Jarrett. The Russians and the Nation working together is definitely bad news for everybody else.

I'm trying to comment on the things I really liked, but that is everything. Great, great show where evrything matters.

So now Ronnie is going to kill Embry right?

That 6-man AWA challenge match looks like a lot of fun. A Japanese Rumble is an interesting idea. I wonder how the fans there would receive something like that.

That stunt granny was amazing. I loved her kicking at Fuerza's shins and Fuerza standing there not knowing what to do. Loved them going back over to her, especially when Octagon brought Fuerza back to be scolded while he rammed Fuerza's head into a seat next to her. Best I've seen Octagon and probably the only time I've really liked him. Fuerza was amazing as always. Both guys bled big, to the point where I don't think they should be as close to the fans as they were. Octagon's tope was pretty insane, going almost all the way over Fuerza even though he was a row back. Really good to borderline great match with a lot of drama at the end and a very good crowd.

Takano throws everything but the kitchen sink at Tenryu. Tenryu gets in a good chair toss at Takano, but really takes a beating through 90% of this. Then Tenryu hits a few lariats and wins with a powerbomb. How does this make anyone look good?

I liked Yatsu's focus on the head and how Tenryu had to battle back from almost being KOed to get the win. I'd agree that Tenryu didn't really care for "epic" match style. He liked giving and taking a beating. But when you really look at it, Tenryu wrestled well into his 50s with that style and those guys putting on the epic matches made it how far? I thought some of this match could have been better executed and question some of the same things as above. But this is a really good match and probably the best you will get from this style with Yatsu as a Tenryu opponent.

I liked Roop backing into a title shot against Taylor. Stud Stable as new champs is definitely a big win even if it wasn't exactly earned. I see what you mean with Flair not having the title. A 60 minute draw with Mascaras loses something when the big gold isn't there.
-
Fun spotfest. I felt like some of the timing that you need to really get something like this right wasn't there between these two. Small details like Asai running before he is whipped by Salvaje or little pauses where there should have been action. But overall a very good match for both.

[1991-10-28-WWF-MSG, NY] Ric Flair vs Roddy Piper / Interview: Ric Flair
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1991
Good match and I thought both guys worked really hard. They cut a pretty good pace in front of a crowd that seemed more pro-Flair than I would have figured. As much as I agree with garretta's ideas about what should have happened, I would guess Flair himself was fine with the way this ends. It fits his MO to a T. One thing I think that needs to be remembered is Flair liked being the heel that made it look like the babyface should have won. -
At what point does Garvin just kill Embry for all of this shit? Terry and Dory are going to have something to say about this.
-
That was one stacked Prime Time card. The main would have been a huge match on any WWF TV at the time, never would have seen all of that on one night. Much better than the real thing if you ask me.
