  1. They were hyping Andre at the Royal Rumble pretty strong. This was around the "who will manage Andre" angle was going on. I guess this fits the thread. WCW hyping up Glacier on Nitro only to have him debut on WCW pro on a Sunday afternoon airing
  2. yup Nash played for Tennessee in the late 70s and Magic for Michigan State it's alarming how old Kevin Nash is. You'd think Magic would be quite older but he's not
  3. Strange year for the WWF. Obviously it was a bad year for the company but 1995 had (by pro wrestling standards) logical straight forward booking that built from month to month and show to show. It was somewhat uninspired but at least the company was willing to adapt and try to simplify things. Jim Ross briefly getting the book early in year obviously had something to do with all the strategy and athlete talk. And Bill Watts (!) getting the book for a few weeks in the fall can't be ignored. But it was still probably an identity crisis lying underneath as they still tried to book like the 80s boom sometimes while flirting with a traditional style. with all the other names you mentioned coming into the company and gaining power I wonder how much influence the Clique had on the changes?
  4. I went to a WWF house show in August of 95. Henry Godwin was injured so couldn't work Adam Bomb so he was replaced by Rad Radford. Godwin stayed around ringside to second Spicolli and was heeling on the fans in the front row including a handicapped child. Bob Holly had hugged the handicap child before his match with Skip. So after Godwin heels the child some fan in the front row gets up and dumps his entire box of popcorn over HOG's head. He shouts out 'That was for Sparky Plug you smelly motherfucker!" That probably doesn't sound funny in print but me and my cousins and the rest of our friends were howling with laughter the rest of the night. We still talk about it till this day. Canterburry got security and told him "to throw this fucking guy out of here!" The fan was ejected. on the same show Sunny was getting cheered like crazy and when Candido wasn't looking she would play to the crowd and smile and wave at us. As soon as Chris turned around she would stop and start heeling. Fun night of fan/wrestler intereraction all around!
  5. Brian Armstrong was a great second in this time frame. Hall always seemed willing to put other people over
  6. I still think the gimmick fit the timeframe. Maybe the grunge style was phasing out but there were still remnants of the culture. Cobain had killed himself less than a year earlier I was marking crazy for the character at this time
  7. I had no idea Shawn was married before. Damn. Rock played in the infamous Cottom Bowl game against Texas in 1991. Miami set an all time record for penalty yardage in that game (including several late hits) Miami won the game
  8. I have no problem with Todd having problems with the booking (Cena shouldn't have won, Punk getting a title shot by putting a guy in a submission move) but that man has zero sense of humor. What a fuddy duddy!!
  9. Lawler teaming with Andy made no sense but I'll be damned if Andy's celebration with Jimmy Hart after he turns back heel doesn't kill me every time. I love that angle so much
  10. Gerry Brisco was in the BSK? Or secret Clique member? Awesome
  11. it's been a while but I swear they were hyping up a "Royal Rumble Raw" where they would air the 96 match in length
  12. the WWF aired the match on the 1/8/96 edition of RAW. They aired the hog pen match the week before. they had planned on airing the entire Royal Rumble match on TV before they regained their sanity
  13. Nash's facial expressions and Hunter's "fainting" had me rolling tonight. http://www.411mania.com/411mania_images/wr...angrybs1011.jpg
  14. and Shawn might be returning to TV to get involved in the Nash/Hunter program. They are about to release new DX gear. Looks like Punk will move on to Del Rio
  15. Punk did the job again in the tag match. Yes it was Nash interference but damn
  16. have to remember that Russo hated the Royal Rumble concept. The 99 Rumble was his way of illustrating how silly the concept was (in his opinion) Around 1998 he wrote an article in WWF magazine trashing the match and concept and that it insulted the fan's intelligence. He didn't even want to do the Rumble match on the show sort of the same way Bret Hart hated the Survivor Series concept I guess
  17. who was the old ref the WWF had for years? Dick Kruel or something of that nature?During the 80s boom he looked like he was pushing 75 or so and it was scary trying to watch him keep up in the ring
  18. I actually agree with this. The fact that Punk is starting to act like a traditional WWF/E babyface probably means he's going to be hovering around the top for the rest of his time in the company. I can't remember if it was in the WON or Torch but he is scheduled to get a substantial push in the fall/winter months. Yes it sucks for his character but that's how Vince wants his babyfaces to act
  19. I like how Scott tries reviewing RAW and the other shows once every few years and then goes right back to being ostracized wrestling fan. From his recent tone it's only a matter of time before he quits again. He just can't seem to ever give it up all together
  20. oh man check out Todd's RAW review. He does the whole thing in sarcastic praising tone. Who thought it was come to this?
  21. "an Art Donavan or Rob Naylor"
  22. from what I gather H is just echoing Bobby Heenan's definition of good work
  23. I'm intrigued to se how a Jake/Sting "Cactus/Sting" like brawl would have been. Jake was not one to take many sick bumps or dangerous spots
