JerryvonKramer
Ha ha. I am sad enough to think I can tell the year and even the time in the year of Ted in his entire WWF run based on the length and colouration of his hair, his costume and other small things. This pic seems like it's from a PWI, in particular this one from Jan 1988: The face he's pulling doesn't seem very Million Dollar Man to me, which is why I think it was taken before. BrickHithouse
I gotta say, that PWI cover is certainly strong evidence in your favor.
flyonthewall2983
It must be from 87 or 88 though when his hair was lighter.
JerryvonKramer
Either it's late UWF, sometime during his All Japan run or very very early WWF and before he was doing the character properly. He did work a bunch of WWF dates in the second half of 87 before ever appearing on TV. That pic could easily be from that time.

The cover date as you said is Jan 1988. that means the mag was done about 6 weeks before the date on the ratings, which is probably a good month to two months before the 6 weeks... so probably from October 87 or so. He wouldn't have had a pic like that done if he was already in the WWF...Apter mags had no access to the WWF guys then. So, it was definitely a pic drawn from their archives. I'd guess UWF at the same shoot they did the PWI Cup or whatever it was called picture with everyone grabbing at the trophy. So it's an older pic, probably UWF era, on that cover. Not that it helps, just sayin'.
BrickHithouse
For the hell of it, here's the first picture of Dibiase in a WWF publication, September 1987 cover date. Subscribers would have received that issue in the mail the first week of August 1987. That's way earlier for a Dibiase WWF sighting than I would have thought. I did not find the photo used for the Mid South cover but am still 90% sure it's a WWF/Tom Taylor pic. Was 100% sure 8 hours ago, so total proof that it's a Mid-South picture should be right around the corner.
flyonthewall2983
Plus I don't think Vince would have ever allowed Ted to do a photo shoot without his ring wardrobe of a nice suit.
artDDP
That DVD cover does, indeed, look awesome and this thread brings back the memories. My dad would find anything wrestling on TV to watch with me back then and introduced me to a lot of stuff. I also would love to know where I can find more WWF Magazine scans. I loved trips to the grocery store to beg my parents for a new one every month.

BrickHithouse
This sumbitch is coming out tomorrow. Can't wait, even though I think I already have all but a couple of these matches. Also Parv, I found this same Dibiase cover picture in a 1987 PWI issue - so it's definitely a pre-WWF picture. So I was wrong 100%. Mark it down, since it's rare, possibly unheard of, for anyone to admit to being totally wrong on a wrestling board.

Lust Hogan
I'll be picking this up at lunch. I won't get a chance to watch until tonight but I'll post thoughts after watching, moreso the talking heads segments than the matches. Al
Maybe an hour into the doc. There's actually a Steve Williams interview clip. Also seen Flair, Terry Taylor, Bill Watts, Dusty Rhodes, Ted Dibiase, Jake Roberts, Jim Cornette, Jim Duggan. Jake looks as good as he's been in years. Just confirming, there is a full blown documentary in addition to the matches? The doc is cut up and shown between the matches. I took the day off to watch this. So far the interviews are informative and the VQ is of course top notch. I'm not even to the epic gimmick match (which I've never ever seen) and already this ranks among the best WWEDVD releases, miles above the WCCW and AWA releases. Lust Hogan
I just finished watching all of the talking head pieces so I will comment. There's not really a documentary but rather history of the promotion broken up into bits prior to the match. Off the top of my head I would think more along the lines of the Saturday Night's Main Event release or the Randy Savage release. They had a segment on the blu-ray talking about the Rat Pack and it gave a brief history on each member of the group (DiBiase, Bourne, Duggan), what they brought to the group, and then how it transitioned into Ted vs. Duggan. THEN you get the matches that correspond to the stuff you just watched. I would have preferred a full blown documentary but this was pretty good. This, IMO, was a way to FINALLY get Ted DiBiase over and give him credit for all of his work in wrestling much like the WCCW release did for The Freebirds. They put Ted over strong as well as JYD. Surprisingly they put Butch Reed over as a guy more talented than JYD who could go in the ring but lacked JYD's charisma. One Man Gang and Buzz Sawyer were also put over strongly as was the Rock and Roll Express/Midnight Express rivalry. Ted got quite a bit of segments but there was no issue with that. I was surprised to see Steve Williams talking with a voice box a few times in there. I thought he would just be mentioned (And he was put over really well) but didn't expect to see him there. Terry Gordy got put over well by DiBiase too. The funniest story was on the extras when Ernie Ladd's father passed away and Ladd wasn't handling it well after being at the wake so he called Watts and asked if he could wrestle that night to take his mind off things. Watts fought him on it but finally relented however Ladd gets to the back and tells everybody how cruel Watts (Ladd called him "The Hat") is for making him work right after his Dad died! Overall if you have NO Mid-South I would say this is an excellent pickup. I had a gift card and paid nothing for it so I'm happy overall. Quite honestly I prefer the 80's Mid-South set to this as it covers the same ground but gives you more matches. All of the talking head stuff was good but didn't tell me anything I hadn't heard or read before. BTW.....can someone tell Butch Reed you don't wear button up shirts and dress slacks to ghetto street fights?? Good Grief!!
Al
Also interesting is that quite a few matches have added commentary from Jim Ross.

Johnny Sorrow
I just popped it in, and it's pretty great so far. It's like a perfect addendum to the Mid-South set. Edit: Man, the Duggan in the gorilla suit deal is still so fucking amazing. They get all the little details right. They don't just say, "Hey, a guy in a gorilla suit is in the crowd!". Since the show was at a fair, Watts says, "Hey, there's the gorilla from the fair, enjoying the show and reminding the fans to check out the fair after the wrestling." Johnny Sorrow
Also interesting is that quite a few matches have added commentary from Jim Ross. And the great thing is, it's not like previous new commentary where guys are talking like they're watching something from the past. Ross is commentating as if he was there live and doing commentary.
