I'm watching the first MNW episode and is there a less sincere guy than The Miz on these things? He comes off as a parody of a talking head.

I had the same reaction. That schtick works the first time you see it, but it quickly wore thin as it kept repeating itself throughout the episode.

WWE's Inbox feature on YouTube this week (fan asks questions, wrestlers answer) is about cartoon characters and starts with a clip from Eastern Championship Wrestling TV with Chris Michaels doing a promo and concluding that "we're not a cartoon."

I mention that to ask why they've clearly got somebody with the encyclopaedic knowledge or an incredibly detailed database to think of and locate an obscure clip based on one word, yet they can't figure out that you need to show World Class from 1983 in chronological order.

I could be completely off the mark here but I get the sense that WWE.com staff (who seem to be quite intelligent and knowledgeable) are different from the people who run the Network, I wish the WWE.com staff had more influence over the network for example next time they make a list like "Best Velocity Matches" and it seems like a no brainier to me, to upload onto the network a special with the said matches.

Brief clips are probably fine. Have them lead into stills for dramatic effect. But the strong majority of people who watch Raw every Monday don't have the network, why give it away for free?

Maybe instead of showing clips or stills they just talk about how incredible the PPV was and you have to buy the Network to see the replay?

Actually, that wouldn't work given how disingenuous the current commentary team seems when selling anything.

Yeah supposedly next week they are putting up 100 hours of Nitro on the Network. If they are putting in order, that covers at least a year of the product. Not sure when Nitro went 2 hours. They are also going to have the next 2 Monday Night Wars shows this week. I saw something about "RAW Attitude week" but not sure when or what exactly is being shown.

I really think leaving the Monday Night Wars until re subscription time was a huge mistake. They should have went heavy on Monday Night Wars stuff from the very start and been hyping original content as the hook to keep you past the initial 6 months.

I pretty much gave up on the Monday Night Wars show after hearing Eric tell about how he threw out two hours of prime time TV as the way to compete against WWF in the belief Ted would never go for it. Despite the fact Nitro was only an hour for the first year or so, there's no way that running against Raw wasn't the idea. Just like how he just happened to offer Lex a deal with no idea it ran out the day before the first Nitro. Come the fuck on.

Also hearing Vince play the "They were trying to put us out of business! How DARE THEY" card is such stomach turning bullshit from a guy who literally put everyone else out of business.

A few people on the F4W board claim they are still able to access the WWE Network, even though their subscriptions expired.

Has this happened to anyone here?

That's a yes for me. Just for the hell of it I went on today before picking up the kids from school and sure enough I can still watch. My subscription expired on Sunday and I even checked to make sure I didn't have automatic renewal on last week. Not sure what to make of it. Are they giving me a free trial? Will they take me going on to watch as an automatic renewal? Strange to say the least.

Eric has been pretty consistent through the years with the Nitro story, though, he has always said that it was supposed to be a meeting to talk about licensing WCW shows in Japan and he did not expect the question.

On these shows it's also funny how they paint this picture of a Southern billionaire that is obsessed 24/7 with Vince and wants to put him out of business at any cost.

The "THEY ARE TRYING TO STOP US FROM FEEDING OUR FAMILIES" line is even worse when it's an obvious lap dog like Michael Hayes repeating bullshit corporate memes.

Some interesting things on the show:

1. I did not really start following the "internet" part of the wrestling business until probably around 2001/2002 but I wonder how accurate the Miz's comment about "It was 1996 the internet wasn't really around back then. You can convince the fans anything" kind of line. For the people around that time how much did people really know before hand that Hogan was turning heel and that Nash and Hall had left the WWE. Guess it depends on the popularity of Meltzer in 1995 - 1996

2. I also laugh at about how Nash and Hall get all this extra money because WCW actually thought the Fake Diesel and Fake Razor Ramon was going to be Nash/Nall. Obviously they have the opinion how about how stupid WCW was in 2014 but it does seem that even at the beginning of the Outsiders it sounds like Nash saw that how bad it was. The story about Nash having to tell Bischoff that it really doesn't look good that 2 guys the fans believe are WWE guys are destroying the entire WCW roster is interesting.

3. Apparently they are convinced that one of the reason the NWO angle was so over because it looked like the WWE guys were kicking the WCW guys butt and proving who the dominant organization. That is a stretch to say the least. If people were so excited to see WWE guys beat the crap out of WCW guys how come they didn't care about them in WWE.

I don't know how they are going to get 20 some shows out of it because they are really going fast in this history.

Every online service at the time (AOL/Prodigy/CompuServe) had message boards devoted to wrestling. In fact, all three promotions of the time would have their guys doing either organized chats or just BS'ing with fans. I remember getting Mortis to send me an autographed photo and acting like a stupid jerk to Stevie Richards and having him block me on AOL.

It wasn't as mainstream as it is now where you have hastags in every commercial, but to say it wasn't really around then is a stretch to say the least.

I will say as someone who wasn't reading "da sheetz" in 1996, I knew Nash and Hall were leaving for WCW but I was shocked Hogan turned heel.

I wasn't TOO internet savvy in 96' or anything, but I can speak at least a little bit for late 97'-98', which isn't necessarily "light years" ahead of 96'.

Specifically, I'll mention Montreal.

It was known, on the day of the show, that Bret Hart was going to WCW by most internet/dirtsheet fans. Like CM Punk's Money In The Bank match against Cena in 2011, there were still some serious question marks, though - does he win against HBK and drop the title on RAW? If he does drop the title to Shawn, is it clean or through a cheap tactic? Does Bret even show up? How can he even work a match against Shawn when the two have legit beef? Going into the show, the internet fans were expecting something historic and possibly even unscripted...but we just didn't know what it would be.

I think, and I could be wrong on this, in 96', there was the same sort of speculation surrounding who Hall and Nash's mystery partner would be. I think people expected someone big...but I don't think people necessarily expected Hogan in big numbers. I know that I personally (and I'm guessing many fans agreed) felt that Hall and Nash were coming in to eventually LOSE to a babyface Hogan, the same way Hogan had steamrolled through all the other monsters in WCW. In hindsight, Hogan's turn made so much sense...but at the time, like today with Cena, I don't think anyone ever thought they'd see the day when the industry's top hero (even if he was getting booed - again, Cena comes to mind) would become a full-fledged villain.

Montreal was a really unique situation because it was picked up by the Canadian media as a significant news story and the WWF was forced to acknowledge the truth that he was leaving. The Internet definitely played a big part in that story gaining momentum, but I think the Canadian media being more willing than the U.S. media to cover wrestling seriously was equally, if not more, important.

The one big difference is that Hogan's numbers were falling across the board, and there really was no reason not to turn him heel. The only thing that would have stopped it would have been Hulk's ego unwilling to pull the trigger.
