Blazer
I sold my tapes back in 2001 to a friend knowing they'd be pretty much redundant in the years to come. If I still had them I very much doubt I'd bother trying to watch them due to the sheer amount, the lack of labelling on some and the quality of some of the ones that I got through trading over the years. So much easier now to watch some on HDD's, YouTube, The Network and DVD. We're spoilt nowadays. I sold most of my tapes around 2001-2002 before I moved and got married. I remember I sold a bunch off on various boards and did fairly ok. I think I got out just before the market crumbled. I had every Raw taped from '93-'96 and tons of other stuff. Happy I sold then and didn't have to throw the stuff away. Now I'm trying to recollect a lot of that stuff on dvd.
Kevin Ridge
The worst thing about tapes was me passing out at night and taping over stuff by accident. Had a really good VCR that was still holding up well but left it at my parents house with all my VHS tapes. Don't have a huge collection but had loads of stuff from Japan from 2001-02 and a few Coliseum videos. I'd probably still watch those if I had my VCR. Strummer
I'm 34 but I remember that quite well. That and "You, all right! I learned it by watching you!"Same age and I remember that commercial so well. Scary thing is we are probably around the same age as the dad actor now when he shot that PSA Another bygone trope of the 80s. The screaming "crazy" shouting shills hocking electronics and the like. For the life of me I can't remember the name of the most famous one there
Blazer
Ah, wasn't there a "Crazy Eddie" who did that? I remember when we first got the home shopping channels around 1986. One of the "Crazy Eddie" types was on Saturday Nights on a local UHF station during that one hour block when wrestling was NOT on that night. Literally, from 5pm until 1:30 am in Chicago, there was wrestling pretty much on continuously on the UHF stations. 5pm World Class 6pm GLOW 7pm NWA Worldwide 8pm AWA 9pm Pro Wrestling This Week 10pm Either Wrestling Challenge or UWF 11pm Either WWF All-American or Spotlight of UWF Power Pro 12:30 am Bob Luce's WWA

Loss
To relate this back to wrestling, I really do think the commercials help put things in context. Wrestling is a reflection of the culture and commercials put in context where the pop culture was at the same time.
goodhelmet
What fucks me up is that I always thought the Aaron Burr milk commercial was a lot more recent than it was.

I always remembered the 11am Sunday slot up to about 88 then it changed to either 5 or 6pm Sunday night on channel 26.

There was a very short period, after it was moved from Channel 26 to Channel 66, where it was bumped around to different times. The channel 26 affiliation ended around May of 1986. The only reason I remember this is because I missed the Hall/Hennig tag title loss to Rose/Somers when I couldn't find it. After it moved to Channel 66, it was on Saturday morrnings in the Fall of '86 and then moved to Saturday nights for a brief spell before settling in at 6pm or 7pm on Sunday nights. thebrainfollower
Got about 80 Coliseum Videos including all the PPV's up to Wrestlemania X. Every now and then I pop one in with friends for nostalgia's shake. My best friend keeps a copy of the 45 minute Hulk Hogan video at his vacation home because that was his favorite as a kid. Loss
The Turner Home Entertainment releases that would start with a block of ads for all the shows was so great. I remember watching that over and over, usually more than the actual show that was on the tape.

Sidebottom
One of the best part of watching on VHS via a tape trader for me was seeing what was on "after" my purchase. Say I bought a Dynamite Kid comp, usually the tape wouldn't be a brand new one and there would be another recording straight after it. Whether it be wrestling related, porn, Star Trek, there was usually something else.
pantherwagner
For me the best part of watching on VHS was hoping that commercials would be there. Especially if it was Japanese wrestling.

Haha, I loved it when you'd get a Best of Liger or Best of Les Kellett comp, and for some inexplicable reason it would be followed by two minutes of some Joshi tag match that looked absolutely phenomenal but you had no idea what it was, then that cuts off early to some exploding barbed wire death match that was not in the slightest bit stylistically in keeping with the rest of the tape. pantherwagner
I have found porn maybe a dozen times at the end of Japanese women wrestling tapes. Not a surprise. Someone once told me that the possible biggest AJW collector in Japan is a fairly prolific Japanese fetish tape trader too, whatever that was supposed to be. That also explains all of those unwatchable AJW handhelds from the 80s and 90s where the camera was focused 90% of the time on the crotch or ass of the wrestlers, even if they were Devil Masami, Lioness Asuka or somebody that wasn't necessarily attractive. donsem43
Wasn't there a tape dealer who had a website listing a ton of 80's AJW, but every description was super creepy. When I was a kid, my uncle would tape PPVs for me and usually put cartoons to fill up the rest, but there was one time that he forgot which was when he used one of his old porn tapes. Let's just say my mom wasn't impressed.
Steenalized
Sometimes. If/when I go back to my mom's house, I'll sometimes search the basement and the mountains of junk down there to see what I can find. There are at least a dozen boxes of VHS tapes down there. Most of them are family gatherings and home movies, some TV, some boxing matches and NFL games, and then there are probably a couple dozen PPVs from about 94-98. Mostly WWF, some WCW. A guy my dad worked with was a wrestling fan, so he'd get the PPVs, tape them, then give me a copy. When I find one I'll usually watch at least a bit. Kind of a moot point since they're all on the WWE Network in much better quality, but you know, nostalgia.
Smack2k
The Turner Home Entertainment releases that would start with a block of ads for all the shows was so great. I remember watching that over and over, usually more than the actual show that was on the tape. Holy shit yes....The 4 ads for Bash '86 / Bash '87 / Starrcade '86 / Starrcade '87 were fuckin great...could watch them all the time....with Flair knocking on the screen.... Also, I cant get over that so much music changed on newer releases and that hurts things for me...plus, the cases are so damn cool.. some of my favorites: 1. Bash '86 Tape with Dusty covering Flair (and the extra sticker if your tape had Flair vs. Hawk added) 2. Bash '87 Tape with those terrible drawings of everyone in War Games One other thing (I realize I am in the minority here, but fuck it, who cares) - CLAMSHELL cases....Love that shit and still do....those cases were so damn cool when I was a kid... I also agree with seeing what else was the on the tape...once after some WCCW shows I got ended, it cut to a Spanish Version of Dusty and Tully for the National Title in '86 on TV
WrestlingPower
I'm still semi-actively converting stuff but that's the only time I use a VCR. I have 4 or so, one I got at a yardsale recently. Some stuff plays better on different machines so you just never know when you need other options around for VCRs. I still convert them onto a DVD recorder with hard drive where you can shorten/edit/divide whatever right on there. I never bothered to figure out capturing stuff onto the computer. I have 3 of the Panasonic HDD recorders in the house. I've done a fair bit of converting lately for yearbook projects and I've recently started in on the RF white box shoots since those are easy to do. Getting rid of the old VHS is rather hard to do though. The only stuff I'm keeping is my original TV comp tapes and anything I filmed myself.
