Steenalized
I coincidentally watched that Doom/Horseman match last night and loved it. A street fight really shouldn't go long. By nature its supposed to be rough and hard hitting. Weapons come into play. That match shouldn't go 20. Another few minutes might have helped but for the style of match that length was right on. Barry Windham bled about 2 minutes into it and Simmons joined him within the next 60 seconds or so.
El-P
Hashimoto/Zangiev is the greatest short match ever. Oh God yes. Thanks for reminding me how much I loved Victor Zangiev.
Steenalized
Watched that one now too. Zero qualms about calling that the best short match ever. The conclusion I'm coming to is that you definitely can have great short matches but the ceiling is probably lowered because of those time constraints. These matches are some of the best short matches ever, yet I wouldn't call them greatest match of all time material.
ButchReedMark
Chris Masters and Drew McIntyre had a great little match that was what, 90 seconds?
Jimmy Redman
It went about 1:50, but that includes Drew cutting a promo mid-match. There was just over a minute of action.
ButchReedMark
And I loved it.
JerryvonKramer
Hashimoto/Zangiev is the greatest short match ever. Fucking phenomenal
NintendoLogic
The discussion seems to have shifted from shortest great matches to greatest short matches.
Kronos
I had a run where I thought a match had to be 30-45 min to be truly great. Now that stuff bores me unless it's something truly magical, like some of those Flair in Japan Broadways and a few All Japan 90s classics. Nowadays, I think you can tell a satisfying story in 20-25 min if you work it smart. Even 15 min works if you know what you're doing. Isn't Savage/Steamboat only about 15? That one has great action in-ring as well as Steele and fun outside the ring.
Steenalized
The discussion seems to have shifted from shortest great matches to greatest short matches. You say that as if they're mutually exclusive categories.
iamthedoctor
Is there any longer matches than one hour on film? Monsoon once claimed he did a 2 hr match.
Jimmy Redman
That 75 minute Bryan-Aries match. And technically a lot of Royal Rumbles.
JerryvonKramer
Didn't Inoki and Saito once wrestle on an island for 2 days?
GSR
Some of those Chikara Ciberneticos maybe?
KrisZ
Punk/Hero is the gold standard for this era of long ass matches
Childs
Didn't Inoki and Saito once wrestle on an island for 2 days? Yes, but mercifully, the tape version is clipped.
soup23
Hero vs. Punk 2/7/03 - 93 Minutes I'm fairly certain all the Ciberneticos from Chikara except 1-2 went over 60 minutes. The longest clocked in at around 100 minutes IIRC.
Steenalized
The ROH champions vs. all stars elimination tags have gone over an hour.
funkdoc
there was that one AJPW elimination match on fan appreciation day, from the early 90s...i think it had the four corners + baba & rusher kimura lol. was over 70 minutes IIRC
dawho5
There was a full 60 minute AJ match with the 4 Pillars, Akiyama and Hase. It was actually really entertaining.
concrete1992
Didn't Inoki and Saito once wrestle on an island for 2 days? If only I could find this in full. Okada and Tanahashi should recreate this magic. I expect a campfire scene with Okada and a dinosaur.
