WWE cut all ties with Hulk Hogan

The thing is Hogan IS wrestling history, so how can they erase him?

There is no feasible way of discussing wrestling from 1983 to about 2001 without acknowledging Hogan. It would be like trying to do a history of the 20th Century without mentioning Hitler.

It's quite easy. You just don't mention wrestling history on your broadcast. Unless is Mania season in which by this time the story will have passed. He also won't be erased. Everyone knows Hogan, it's Hogan, the references will just be smartly relaxed.

Absolutely terrible play from Hogan. In public or in private, those be dickheadish remarks to make that someone on the role of a company ambassador should avoid.

It's actually quite surprising how the MASTER of backstage politics and image preservation could fuck up quite so badly.

It was in private, banging his mates wife and rat arsed, his etiquette was probably not as the make a wish level that night.

It's the fact that he didn't choose to settle with Gawker under these circumstances.

The comments are eight years old, not recent. He hadn't even gone to TNA yet when they were made let alone an "ambassador" for WWE at that point.

To put it bluntly, he got greedy. Even if he does win the case, I'm sceptical he would win the damages he is seeking. But maybe his lawyers convinced him otherwise.

I wonder how much of this WWE reaction is coming from Vince being pissed Hogan knew these comments existed and never mentioned them. Not that I would expect Hulk to volunteer that info, but I can totally see Vince's takeaway being "how dare you blindside me and my company" and not giving a shit about the actual racism.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking above. Was it Hacksaw who talked about how when him and Sheik got busted, Vince's reaction was to say, "How could you do this to us!?" And that is pretty shitty. It's not just that Hogan got greedy but he had to also believe he was somehow untouchable to gamble that it couldn't leak. That or he's so out of it he thought it wouldn't actually be a big deal.

It also possible that he's just used to sayin shit like that so often in private, it wouldn't have especially stood and he didn't even remember. But there have been rumors before so I wonder if there was ever a time Vince questioned him about it already...

Well asking for way above what you think you can get is kind of standard operating procedure when you sue. You always expect the damages to be reduced from what you ask so you go way high.

That's true, but he's clearly going to lose a lot of money from this revelation (unless Hogan's lawyers can prove that Gawker were behind the leak and he gets a bigger payout as a consequence). Hard to see how the risk outweighed the potential benefits, as this coming out at some point in the trial seemed pretty likely.

Hogan knew what was on the tapes, as there's audio CDs of him watching the sex tapes with his lawyer and Keith Davidson (the man alleged to have been shopping the tape around, extorting Hogan) as part of an FBI sting operation.

My first feeling was that it was either done because he pissed Vince off or it was Cosby-level bad. Firing him from the show and scrubbing him from the website before putting out a statement (which they eventually did, that read rather rote) really felt to me more spiteful than panicked.

What he said was pretty bad, but I and a lot of other people seem to look at it for what it is. Something said in private, as opposed to taking that position before any kind of public. Warrior did exactly that and he was primed to be a spokesperson for the company just before he died, btw. And the company is rightly getting knocked for doing this (as well as their obvious racial stereotypes, past and present) in such a swift manner not befitting the toll of the man's own blood, sweat and tears shed for their profit.

His apology to People seemed pretty sincere to me, no backtracking away or "sorry if you were offended". I believe he'll be able to find a way to redeem himself again, just not soon. And whether it's with the WWE is certainly up in the air right now, but if they have any modicum of respect for what has been done for them they'll welcome him back eventually.

I see it being similar to Dog the Bounty Hunter who was also caught on tape saying something similar. He seemed legitimately sorry and was eventually able to go back to what he did for a living. The only difference was that Dog's rant was prompted by being pissed off by (IIRC) one of his kids and it was more of an "I got upset and said something I shouldn't have" thing. Hulk's rant being seemingly so casual might end up hurting him even more by how matter of fact it seems to come off.

Even with the ratings as they are now, you have to imagine some good number will hit at some point (maybe around Mania), and someone could probably make a few bucks by buying relatively low. Hogan didn't mean a whole lot to their bottom line recently. I get a sense that WWE's stock is more based around BS than a lot of things. There's not a lot of understanding on how the business operates and thus it can get affected both ways by things that are pretty meaningless ultimately or are outright fantasy.

I don't know about him being a master of image preservation... there are the comments about Graziano blaming him for what happened, the suncream photos with Brooke, him dating a woman that looks like his daughter and probably a few others that I am forgetting.

He'll be eventually back... Hogan is truly a master at redeeming himself time after time.

Let's not forget all his failed business ventures (Pastamania, the Hulk Hogan Grill, Hogan's Beach, the "Hulk Hogan Museum" in Florida which bombed hard)......not to mention all his terrible Hollywood flops.....

But yeah, it's Hulk Hogan, all he needs to do is flex his muscles, rip his t-shirt and say 'BROTHA' and all will be forgotten. Ric Flair is in the same boat, and I'm guilty of it, but I can't not forgive and forget Flair's fuckups and will always be a fan of his
