Wrestling Fan New Years Resolutions For 2016

I need to be more of a motor mouth as I tend to post once a week and sometimes its a sentance long. I suffer a lot from a sense that what I have to say isn't worth saying most of the time due to low self-esteem. So I need to put that behind me and move forward in my life in order to actually produce content.

A-1 on the list is to go to a live show. I haven't been to a live wrestling show in years. I might take the plunge and spend way too much money on a ticket for NXT in Detroit.

I gotta finish the Horsemen set. I'm almost halfway through. I'm also working my way through the 94 set.

If the NWA 80s set comes out this year, I'm gonna grab that and participate in voting.

I'd also like to delve into a promotion, time period, and a wrestler that I'm not all that familiar with. Maybe Buddy Rose, maybe something a little more current. We'll see. I've got a lot on my plate this year.

I'd also like to participate here more. My depth of knowledge doesn't come anywhere close to a lot of the guys here, so I often don't feel that I have much to add. Fuck it.

My resolutions for this year:

Now that I'm working again, finally get hold of some of the compilations and sets so often discussed on here. In particular the 80's Lucha set and the Memphis and Mid South sets.

To check out the local wrestling scene in my adopted hometown of Newcastle Upon Tyne in England. I get the feeling that things are not quite as advanced in this city as some of the other big British cities when it comes to promoting wrestling but there are a few groups - notably Main Event wrestling who seem to book a lot of ICW guys for their shows - that I hope to check out this year.

I've also been toying with the idea of seeing if I can actually get involved in the business even on a small level - helping at the merch table of a local event or doing promotional stuff for a local promotion...

Let's see if the WWE Network keeps uploading that stuff but I'd like to get through the entire Saturday Night/WCW run until at least 1990.

I also want to go through the entire SMW TV and commercial tape run. Let's see if that stuff stays on youtube long enough for me to go through it.

I want to watch more Memphis but I find the TV incredibly frustrating to watch because the "payoff" matches and feuds the TV builds to are all over the place.

Also need to watch and rewatch more old lucha.

2015 was probably first year since age 5 that wrestling wasn't my main hobby. I'd shifted to movies (watching 706) and tried to keep up with current wrestling but allowed myself to miss a few shows here or there. This year I'm wanting to cut way back on the binge watching of movies to watch more wrestling. Definitely staying up on all the current TV (Raw, iMPACT, NXT, Lucha Underground, SmackDown!, Superstars, Main Event, and ROH -- certainly not the best wrestling of all-time but I like keeping up with the ongoing product for the soap opera-like following of storyline development, feuds, etc.) and also digging back into my crates and making a small dent in the giant stockpile of DVDs I've amassed the last decade+ (which is a nice blend of everything, esp. indies of the last decade and a wide variety of puro).

You watched 706 movies in a year? :o

Yeah. That includes features, shorts, and it allows WWE & UFC PPVs, too (never been sure exactly why? Because they're produced? Either way I always figured that was 3 or in the case of UFC sometimes 6-7 hrs. with prelim fights, that I wasn't spending watching movies so logged 'em.) 115 was in theaters so roughly every 3 days I was at the multiplexes or art house cinemas.

Already up to 102 this year. Man, that three-hour Raw seemed crushing last night and that's coming from someone who watched Bela Tarr's Sátántangó in one sitting with no breaks (and it's seven hours!).

Past GWE (and my GWE focus is Classic UK primarily), I want to keep the 3x a Week lucha posting for Segunda Caida up until at least April. That'll take me to two years and 300 matches reviewed and that feels like a pretty substantial footprint. After that I'll likely look at other things.

I'd like to catch up on Lucha Underground too.

That's it though. Work is busy. Life is busy.

Well, I did this. Now i have to catch up on Lucha Underground again though.

1. Watch 80s Ric Flair. I haven't done this seriously in years. Its time to reconnect. This is a bit of a cheat as I confirmed the request with Jewish Santa and have quite a bit of it on the way.

2. Convince my friend in Dallas to go to Mania if I feel like spending travel money, or convince another friend to come watch it here. Its our Super Bowl and none of my friends are into wrestling. Someone will have to suck it up and join me.

3. Write my GWE ballot in pencil, on carbon paper and revisit it at least once later in the year after ticking through some older material.

4. Get to the Garden or Barclays for a show this year. Its a few minutes on the train so no excuse. Will owe the wife a musical or something. Glad I didn't go to the Christmas show though.

5. Post more about what I watch. Made great headway in the '92 MDA and stopped midway through '93 even though I'm now near the end of '94. Must correct this.

6. Not be overwhelmed by what's on the to-watch list. Will get there eventually and nothing wrong with having things to look forward to.

Happy New Year, mf'ers.

1. Done. Made great headway into the Horsemen set and the rest of it is in rotation with other goodies so that I don't plow through anything too quickly.

2. Yeah, that didn't happen. Likely have to wait for it to return to NY.

3. Submitted it. While I haven't thought about my ballot since then and can't say I want to think about rankings, I have thought about certain wrestlers who I've seen a lot more of since then -- Jack Brisco and Terry Funk in particular.

4. Made it to MSG for the Christmas show last week and had a terrific time. Definitely getting back there again this year, perhaps March even if I'm a little lukewarm on a Raw house show.

5. This did not exactly materialize as planned. I watched more wrestling -- old and new -- in 2016, then likely any other year, but stayed so busy moving to what's next rather than stopping to comment on much of it. Hopefully that changes but I enjoyed the hell out of what I watched.,

6. Once again took care of this. The watch list is bigger, but I made it through a ton this pastyear and very much look forward to what's to come.

Finish watching the complete run of SMW on TV. I've got somewhere in the region of just over two and a half years to go.

I didn't manage this. I got towards the latter part of '94 and then got burned out. Tried coming back to it a couple of months later but couldn't even finish an episode. Maybe by this time next year...

Go to one of the indie lucha shows that run here in Dallas.

Did this over WrestleMania weekend - dragged my friends out to a former roller rink in south Fort Worth. It was packed, and we had a great time, even if La Parka went out in an ambulance. Also had elotes for the first time!

Watch more Lucha.

Keep up with NJPW .

Catch up with Lucha Underground and Progress Wrestling

I am moving to North Carolina this summer so I want to find some Indie wrestling in the region.

Finish my dissertation by the ROH 14th Anniversary show so I can enjoy the show free of immediate professional responsibility and spend the last month of the GWE project binge watching wresting.

Lucha - Check, I watched a lot more lucha

NJPW - Nope, unsubscribed to NJ World and more or less stopped watching anything modern Japanese

LU and Progress - Check-ish, not really. I watched more but I am not really caught up at all.

Indy in new region - Check - again - ish. Between the move and starting a new job, I haven't been able to make it to any shows, but I am checking out some upcoming stuff. I at least have my eyes on some schedules.

14th Anniversary Show - Check. Had a great time free of grad school responsibilities in Vegas for the weekend.

Not terrible. I also got a lot of wrestling related stuff in that I hadn't planned on.
