Jetlag
Interesting. Nothing at all from the past decade in the top 100 for Japan? Any reason (not disputing, just intrigued) Too hipster. You wait until I release my Top 100 consisting of nothing but pre-1992 JWP and WING handhelds.
BigBadMick
Basically, the only time I watch my fave matches is if I'm showing them to someone who hasn't seen them before or I happen to watch one for a podcast I'm watching footage for. Otherwise I'm all about watching stuff I haven't seen beforeI was going to comment on the fact that I'm not sure how far back I trust my opinion on favourite/best matches, but the last comment above caught my attention too. Ricky, was it a conscious decision to avoid rewatching stuff? I agonize with myself over whether I should do less rewatching and more brand new to me stuff all the time... KB8
KB8's post reminded me of something I think about periodically. How often do you guys watch your favorite matches? I generally only watch the matches at the top of my favorites list about once a year, if that. Part of that is an attempt to prevent the matches from seeming less special due to overexposure. If I'm really into a song, I have a tendency to listen to it repeatedly until I get sick of it, and I don't want that to happen with matches I like. Also, I'm all about the thrill of discovery and reevaluation, and there's basically zero chance of my opinion of 6/9/95 or Hart/Austin changing meaningfully. I'm more or less the same. I've never tended to re-watch matches unless I'm going through a comp or something. Most of the 90s heavy hitters I'll hold off on re-watching until I get to them on the yearbooks. Like yourself, there are matches I've seen enough times to know that my opinion of them won't change much either way, but cases where my tastes have shifted from being a huge fan of the broader style makes me wonder (90s All Japan being the main case). I only really have so much free time to watch wrestling at this point and I'd rather spend the majority of it watching random WAR or RINGS or Battlarts shows than going through things I've seen before. Just not enough time to rewatch. Between work, life, new wrestling and other interests, I have to prioritize
elliott
Sorry to disappoint but the only Funks/Arabs tag from that year is 12/78. The version that had been on YouTube was of really poor VQ so that may account for the difference in opinion on rewatch. Clarity breeds contempt. First world problems. Well shit, I feel like I need to rewatch it then. That's so strange because when I first heard of it it had the 9/78 date. Parv has that listed in his 5 star matches list and then I found an AJ Classics disc on Lynch's list with the same date. I'll rewatch it. It should probably be on there anyway. Its Funks vs Abby/Sheik.

Its Funks vs Abby/Sheik. The 78 match was on Dec 9th and it was on the 9th day of the tour. This could have lead to some of the confusion. Anyways, was Shiek hurt in the 78 match because he didn't finish the tour or was it kayfabe, seeing as how Dory stabs the fuck out of him in that match. And Elliot thoughts on Han vs Yamamoto from 6/17/95? That's probably my fav RINGS match and one of the few hyped shoot style matches not on your list. . KB8
I made a list after all. It led to plenty of gaps, but I tried to limit it to things I know I've seen since the turn of the decade rather than going on vague memories, as this is obviously a vitally important venture. So a goodly amount of heavy hitters are missing. I also found it morphing into more of a desert island/favourites list than a straight up best of list, but I would most definitely consider everything there So So Good. JerryvonKramer
You will know which match it is because it ends with Dory seeing red and Sheik doing an all-time epic sell job on his wrist. Bell-to-bell the 79 match is better, especially as a study in heel psychology. But as a complete spectacle and package, and as something that hits Magnum-Tully levels of transcendence, I'd always cite that 78 one, whatever the date is. It's listed in a lot of places as 9/19/78, including on Highspots DVDs and Mid-Atlantic Gateway, but the date could be 12/9/78, which I think it probably is. I have the match here somewhere, I could throw it up if anyone is interested.

elliott
I know I owe some folks some responses. I haven't forgotten, I'm in the middle of moving. I'll respond to things next week
joeg
The previous year the heels had stabbed the fuck out of Terry's arm and pretty much gotten away with it. This one Dory get his hands on some scissors and gets his revenge. joeg
Are the matches from July 78 and 1980 from All Japan or Detroit? I want to say there were even more matches with this foursome in Detroit and Amarillo.
peachchaos
I want to say there were some Funk Brothers clips in We Like To Hurt People. Everything I've seen from Big Time TV has been clips from Japan.

fxnj
The full Funks/Arabs series and just about every other noteworthy pre-split AJPW match is on the AJPW Archive Google Drive. Kind of surprised people here weren't aware of it.
