Atsushi Onita/Tarzan Goto vs. Dragonmaster/Masanobu Kurisu (Texas Street Fight)

http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/17351-atsushi-onita-tarzan-goto-vs-masanobu-kurisu-dragon-master-fmw-texas-street-fight-040190/page-2&do=findComment&comment=5831565

All in all, a really good brawl with some nasty chair shots.

Glad you dug it, man. I'll do my best to rewatch Lucero vs. Hechicero this week and maybe I can get back in on this in a few weeks when work isn't so terrible.

Kronos,

That's a match I saw in passing a few years ago but I've never actually written it up and I'm looking forward to do so. I remember that some things really stood out as unique and it's a great example of what happens when even some of the best wrestlers in the world are put in a situation where they can't begin to contain the force of nature that is Stan Hansen.

My match for you (because you liked the 88 Rockers vs Demos match which I love) is the 8/30/86 Midnight Rockers vs Rose/Somers match. It's here listed as 9/2. This came in #2 on the DVDVR 80s set and is just amazing. I think it's many degrees better than the first cage match between the two teams, for instance.

Southofheavy gave me this last week.

Bryan Danielson v. Jimmy Rave, ROH 2009

https://youtu.be/zRoJrt_fsfs

This is from deep in my ROH dead period, so I have no clue about the context, other than it seems Prince Nana has a group that's all claiming to be from Africa. The fans use toilet paper instead of streamers, which is cute.

The matwork here is nice, seemingly driven mostly by Danielson. There's a freaky twisty version of the Yes Lock that is awesome. The match takes a while to get out of first gear, before a bit of strike exchange and then an interesting fight over heel hooks that plays out a bit like a figure four reversal spot. Danielson gets a choke and elbows to create a stoppage. Was ROH going for that UFC vibe in this time period with the stoppage?

Finally dropped the reviews for Richeyedwards and dawho5 matches, I'm all caught up :)

Really interested in seeing if Grimmas likes or is "meh" about this, my pick for you is

Suwama vs Daisuke Sekimoto - All Japan 1/2/12

https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x43jp36

Interesting, I usually avoid puro, but those are two guys people have said I would like!

Looking at your posts, you seem to be all in on puro. Which means i should avoid that, since it seems like you have it covered.

This is a match I will have to watch too, haven't seen in years, but it's got to be awesome.

Andrade Cien Almas (La Sombra) vs Jushin Liger

Man this brought back some bad memories about lucha commentary, but the match was really good.

A little, but almost exclusively to Bryan. Bringing elements of MMA helped get them noticed and was aided greatly by guys like LowKi and Samoa Joe. Bryan just happened to perfect the blend and, in truth, I wish that WWE brought the ref stoppage angle in. It made for some incredible finishes and teases.

Migs gave me a tag from 1991 WCW

The review is here.

http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/41094-sting-bobby-eaton-vs-cactus-jack-abdullah-the-butcher-wcw-saturday-night-102691/

I liked this as a fun look at guys (Abdullah and Eaton) who are out of their element here. Don't get me wrong, Bobby is fine as a babyface and Abby can do this kind of match, but they clearly perform better in other roles/settings. These kinds of matches are fun to watch just to see how they are handled by the workers. Also good ways of comparing and contrasting workers, because everyone has matches like these where the promotion has them in roles they aren't necessarily going to shine in. And to be fair it was a fun 7 minute WCW tag with big name guys mixing it up.

Edit: Also, you get to hear Jim Ross put over Gordon Solie and Lance Russell. I just found it novel that JR would put over other announcers on-air, even if they are two of the all-time greats that I'm sure Ross truly respects.

for Jetlag i have a match between Kzy and Jimmy susumu, this match was on my mind as Kzy just had his first dream gate world title match. I think this match is a very compressed and understated version of a dragon gate 'epic'.

Edit:

Second dragon gate match in a row from me.

Matt D gave me:

Midnight Rockers vs Buddy Rose & Doug Sommers (AWA All Star Wrestling 8/30/86)

Fantastic stuff. I have said before that I really enjoy the Midnight Rockers against an experienced heel team who can keep them in check and control the pacing when needed. We have that here. Sometimes the kids overdo things a bit - witness Marty's turn at being a flailing punchdrunk, which is just this side of "silly". But the whole thing comes together beautifully.

Matt D -- here's yours for the week:

Stan Hansen & Dan Kroffat vs. Rock N Roll Express (All Japan 10/26/1988)

https://youtu.be/qc3ie7truJA

Kronos,

So, I don't want you to take this one personally. It's a very cool, novel match in a lot of ways. It's just that those ways add up to defeat the otherwise unquestionable purpose of Morton/Gibson, the glorified ideal of southern tag team wrestling, and the shine/heat/comeback formula. I'm glad to have had a chance to watch it again and to actually write about it this time and thank you for that, but it's the embodiment of why we can't have nice things.
