tomk
I don't read the figure four, last time I did Bryan did do more lucha coverage than Dave but less insightfull than Scott Keith. The story Dave did was that this was a surprising finish, but the more important story was that EMLL didn't have Mistico available for big show, didn't have Perro Jr either (or Wagner or were willing to make concessions for Santo) and so they hotshotted a surprise finish. No one talked about it being a good match or a good finish at the time. It took about a month for the match to make the interwebs and people to go "wow despite the booking this was a really good match" and by that time, I don't know about Bryan but Dave had certainly moved onto other things. You would think for Dave to influence a match to be worked match of the year he would have to discuss the quality of the match. It's possible Bryan influenced the vote or that the votes were influenced from something else. Who knows? Still again not that many people voted for it. Dylan Waco
How many post 02 matches made your top fifty list? I would be surprised if any were. How many did you even consider? How many did I watch or re-watch? I promised myself that I would re-watch/watch at least 35 of the heavily pimped matches on the board. I made it to 50 and tapped out at that point. Ended up being everything from 2003 through early 2008 that made the Top 100, and most that made the Top 101-200. There were a few like a Benoit vs Kane TV match that I saw at the time it aired, didn't have any memory of it doing a thing for me, and passed on it to spend my time watching something else more pimped. How much did I seriously consider? After watching/re-watching them, none. I don't think that should be terribly surprising. Back in 2000-2004 when posting regularly about the WWE and it's TV and PPV's, I wasn't as big of a fan of Benoit and Eddy's work in the WWE as most everyone else. I was off Angle's bandwagon pretty early. I never was as high on Brock as most. What I think of Shawn is pretty well known (it's not like many of his matches in the 80s or 90s made my list - just one that I can recall). I never cared much for Trip. I was more tolerant of Cena's work early on than most. I've never been a big Regal or Finlay mark. Edge always struck me as "solid" rather than "great". I'm trying to remember anything I said positive about Rey's work in the WWE. 2000-2004 was well before my jag on watching 80s WWF in response to the DVDVR poll. Didn't start the WWF 80s thread until the end of 2006, which is also when Will's Backlund set came out. My lack of sporting a woody over "Modern WWF" predates looking at the 80s, especially looking deeper into the 80s than the DVDVR list - didn't start writing about that stuff until 2008, probably 1-2 months before Ray asked me to jump into the SC Poll. But what the heck, fans of the WWF/WWE shouldn't dispare. My favorite promotion is All Japan. The work in the promotion started wearing with me in 1997 and by 1998 it was painful. I haven't thought as highly about much of anything from All Japan or NOAH since then that other pimp to the moon. I think the match I've had the most fun with since then was Kobashi vs Suzuki and that was largely for Suzuki goofing on NOAH-style spots. So if 2003-2009 WWE doesn't float my boat, consider than none of the Kobashi-Misawa, Kobashi-Akiyama and Misawa-Akiyama matches after 1/97 are things that would make my "Top 50 All Japan + NOAH" list. I suspect WWE in the 00's would do better on my list than AJPW+NOAH in the 00s would. John I don't doubt any of this. My point wasn't "John compared 00's to 80's and thought 00's sucked." My point was "John and I have different taste as evidenced by the fact that he clearly doesn't like much WWE from this decade, whereas I like a lot of it." Kronos
Will, just gotta throw down some major kudos for the Tanya Tucker menu song on disc 7 of FBVE. Damn, that song makes me homesick. "When I die, I may not go to heaven. I don't know if they let cowboys in. If they don't, just let me go to Texas. Texas is as close as I've been. . ." Tim Evans
I know AAA isn't everyone's cup of Tea right now but the build to Triplemania I think has been great. Especially the 2 big main events: Mesias/Wagner and the Cage match featuring the return for one night of Santo. I never thought I would see Santo in AAA ever again. Especially with Konnan "in charge". Mesias has filled the void Cibernetico left when he left and I've always been a huge Wagner fan so seeing him back in a promotion where he doesn't have to play second fiddle to Mistico is great. Anyone else pumped for this show?

sek69
So does CMLL still ban guys who work the same shows as Santo from working for them? Cause like the whole AAA roster is fucked if they do.
Tim Evans
Yeah CMLL does. Santo's popularity has probably gone down a little bit over the years. He mostly work with PERROS and Cibernetico now along with his own group of guys. How is the AAA guys fucked if they do?

Guys (other than the very top card) in Mexico seem to go from promotion to promotion pretty regularly, and AAA seems to want to put as many guys on the TripleMania card as possible since it's their big show. It stands to reason if CMLL wanted to be dicks, the next time an AAA guy wants to jump ship they could be SOL if they work the show with Santo. Tim Evans
Most ex AAA guys now go to IWRG and the indys (Histeria, Cibernetico, Psicosis, Porky).
sek69
So I was at my wife's cousin's wedding on Saturday, and she's kind of a hippie chick who had mostly 60s-70s music for the reception. In fact, the song they chose to play for their entrance into the reception hall was Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). Thankfully I was able to resist the urge to take my belt off and play air guitar. jdw
Maybe people just liked Panther vs Villano and voted for it? Why the conspiracy theories? Wasn't looking for "conspiracy theories". Was trying to understand why it rated highly. Some of the initial stuff tossed out didn't seem to fly - that a bunch of guys like Phil and Tom voted for it. Didn't make sense as guys like Phil and Tom don't sub to the WON, and it didn't seem likely that Dave takes votes from non-subs (which was confirmed eventually in the thread. That it got a lot of run in the WON at least from a coverage standpoint makes some sense. That Japan is in the crapper without a lot of candidates does as well. That people liked it isn't really the question. It's more the quantity that pushed it that high on the list. Lots of people liked Sabu, and he damn near won Wrestler Of The Year. But if you go back to look at that year, there was more going on than just "people liked him". Dave will chalk it up to conspiracy, and in fact did (even more than he wrote about it in the WON). But that Kawada didn't get ass strong of a vote as some Japanese wrestlers later would. And that the WWF/WCW sort of farted around with having a candidate. And that WON voters were looking for an alternative to WWF/WCW at the time, and ECW filled the niche for some. A lot of things came together that year *in addition to* the Get Out The Vote attempts of the Promotion and/or it's House Organs. John

He's obviously ok with it since they mentioned his name several times putting Kidd over as his only protege, which I guess is a better way to establish his connection to the Harts than "here's a kid who grew up on the family farm and is currently fucking Natalie". I always felt that most wrestlers were pretty sensitive with how their characters were potrayed. Hogan sued WCW for pointing out he was bald when Russo did that "shoot" promo on him. Austin walked out one time because they were thinking of jobbing him out to the Coach. Allegedly HHH refused to lose to Angle when that love triangle story with Stephanie was going on because he felt that his character wouldn't lose to someone like Angle. Death From Above
Tried watching ROH's TV show for the first time the other day, just saw it was on flipping through the channels (It's on The Fight Network here in Canada which I'm getting FREE all month). I lasted less than 60 seconds. There was some promo going on with really murky audio straight out of 1996 ECW, and the first thing I hear is some fan going "Shut up", followed by "NO, you shut up. I'm the babyface, he's the heel, get it right", greeted by thunderous applause from the mutants. Flipped it off right away. Yeah I'm one of those grumpy old people. I caught pretty much the one thing that threw me off ROH to begin with (wrestling written by smart marks to cater to other smart marks) and that was a sour taste for me. Probably would have given it a shot if I'd come in during a match though, but my attention span for "wrestlers I don't relaly know" is just too short these days.
