Observer HOF prediction/ballot question thread
goc replied to dkookypunk43's topic in Megathread archive
What evidence do we really have that Brock Lesnar moves numbers (in WWE) though? I really haven't seen much. Yea he was a big PPV draw for UFC but I haven't really seen where that's carried over. -
Observer HOF prediction/ballot question thread
goc replied to dkookypunk43's topic in Megathread archive
Well I'm happy about The Assassins, Koloff & Colon making it in. Disappointed that the people who only voted for Perro Jr. sunk the chances of any other lucha candidates making it in. -
To be fair, wrestling really is more of a lifestyle than a job unless you're just a "weekend warrior." Maybe so much in NXT since you're mostly staying in one place but once you're on the main roster you're traveling all the time, doing international tours, sometimes doing promotional work on your "off" days and add in the amount of time you have to spend on keeping up your appearance for cosmetic purposes on top of that. It's not exactly a normal 9-5.

That's probably my favorite wrestling music video.

JvK reviews pimped matches from late 90s-10s
goc replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Megathread archive
That has never bothered me much because it's just moves and if you use them properly then can enhance a match. What bothered me a lot (I have now given up) was seeing young talented luchadores working a soft hitting version of NJPW 90s juniors style within the rules of lucha libre. That's actually one of the reasons I liked El Dandy more in his earlier appearances on the lucha set than I did in his stuff in 89 and some of the stuff I've seen from 1990 although I know I'm way in the minority on that. -

I thought lucha rings were really hard because they're essentially boxing rings. I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere and that it has to do with the boxing and wrestling commission still being so heavily involved. -
Actually Swagger WAS pretty entertaining before he won the MITB. I enjoyed fake Kurt Angle era Swagger quite a bit it was when they stripped him of his red, white & blue gear and wanted him to be super serious Chris Jericho clone that he went down the tubes. The tag team with Cesaro was a pretty good use of him too even if Cesaro was the clear star of the team.

Survivor series 1990 an alternative egg hatching
goc replied to Judy Bagwell's topic in Pro Wrestling
It was a really lame reveal but I don't see how you can successfully debut someone by having them hatch out of an egg. The better scenario would have been to never do that stupid idea at all but if they were going to do it, that was probably the best thing that could have happened because it was just a one-off that led to a really stupid moment and didn't end up ruining the career of a guy they wanted to push. I mean just imagine how different things would have gone for his career if it had been The Undertaker's debut like the rumor has always been. The only person who would have even made sense to hatch out of a giant egg would have been a return of The Red Rooster -
This is a good one because it cost them a ton of money and was probably the start of Spike TV souring on them.

But Vince is still in charge (for now), and he seems relentless, even to this day, about favoring the Bodybuilders over the "athlete" types. Based on what exactly? The most jacked guy on the roster is Ryback and it's not like they've done a great job of pushing him. Reigns is a big dude but he's not a jacked bodybuilder. Cesaro has one of the most impressive physiques on the roster but it's not like that's getting him anywhere.

I think you should have to drop at the same time as making your pick.
-
So how are we handling draft picks if someone is already at the cap limit of 34? Seems like you should have to drop someone before making a pick.
-
I think 2015 was worse, because they were stupid enough to do the same thing again. Big difference. They handled Reigns well enough in the WM build to where the fans were elated to see Reigns get destroyed by Brock. They screwed the pooch bad enough in 2014 to get the fans so riled up that a change in plans was 100% necessary. There's something for there to be said in that "Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns" is not a match that has ever officially happened, though. Are people still defending the WM 31 finish? Like, "well, it's the booking AFTER winning the title that has killed Rollins"? No, it's been bad from day 1 and that cash-in. And the win of that MITB match in the first place. Actually yea, I'll go with this for the worst recent debacle. The finish to WrestleMania 31 was fucking garbage and way worse than the build up. I thought the stuff with Roman Reigns & Daniel Bryan leading up to Mania was actually really good. I don't think they were wrong to not go with Bryan in the main event the part where they were idiots was bringing him back BEFORE the Rumble when they could have just as easily had him come back the night after. The stupid MITB cash in ruined what was up to that point one of the best WrestleMania main events ever. And then had almost NO follow up as they had Brock Lesnar go crazy the next night so he could disappear again and Reigns sunk into the background so we could have what feels like half of a 3 hour Raw dedicated to Rollins talking segments when he's not even all that good as a promo.

Yea they wanted Gang to win the U.S. Title (why I don't really know) but obviously New Japan didn't want Sasaki to lose to him so they filmed the re-start to air in Japan only.

JvK reviews pimped matches from late 90s-10s
goc replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Megathread archive
Tecnicos vs. rudos is still pretty much good vs evil though. The clearly defined "good guy vs bad guy" narrative is why I got into lucha way more than I ever did with puro where it's more about Super Tough Fighting Spirit Guy 1 vs. Super Tough Fighting Spirit Guy 2. -
None of the Reed/Flair matches on the Mid-South set really did that much for me. I'd recommend the Murdoch/Reed matches (9/22/1985, 10/14/1985) WAY more than any of the Flair/Reed stuff. I guess the best one was the 1 hour draw (I think that's 8/10/85) but for myself I couldn't imagine ever wanting to watch another Flair broadway.

Editing out all of your posts seem pretty fucking dramatic to me. I enjoyed the Taima.TV thing but you seem like a giant baby. -

Didn't you decide you were going to quit the board anyway? Why are you back just to hate on Parv? He was your biggest fan! -
Individual matches although you can look at these threads: http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/31560-cards-forming-on-nwa-classics/ & http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/31436-houston-wrestling-results-nwa-classics-research/ and watch the cards in order if that's such a big deal breaker

I can't take seriously the opinions of anyone who would write off Mid-South greatness as "the minor leagues." Yea let's compare the promotion that brought wrestling to the Superdome to OVW Johnny was right, this thread needs to die in a fire.
-
I think saying JYD suffers from a "lack of longevity" is a bit dubious considering his run as the top star of Mid-South was a little over 4 years (early 1980 to mid 1984) and then he was frequently in the main event on non-Hogan cards for about 2-3 years in the WWF.

I'm gonna go with what shoe said. The older the reels the more expensive they are to convert.

I haven't been keeping up as much lately with football season taking up a lot of my viewing time but I watched Tommy Rich/Kamala last night and thought that was a ton of fun. I really liked the cat and mouse stuff and though this was a good match and really didn't even get upset at the totally stupid ass finish. I mean sure it doesn't make ANY logical sense why Tommy Rich can pin Kamala's manager to win the match but the crowd fucking LOVED it and I can't see a DQ or a countout finish getting that big of a reaction. Watched the chain match between Dr. Death/Angel of Death today and thought it was pretty good, not quite on the level of the JYD/Reed chain match or the ones with Buzz Sawyer that were on the Mid-South set but still really good. I'm glad they didn't go overboard with the corner touching and only did a few cut offs although I was surprised they went with that gimmick at all since usually Watts chain matches were won with pins.

[1987-02-20-Houston Wrestling] Steve Williams vs Angel of Death (Chain)
goc replied to shoe's topic in February 1987
This was a pretty good match and man I really wish UWF would have been more successful because I LOVE Dr. Death as the babyface ace during the dying days. He just had an aura of being a legit bad ass like very few in wrestling possess almost Brock Lesnar-like in that regard. The ending did come off a bit flat but I'm not sure what they could have really done differently to have a "big moment" to finish on.
