Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 4
Ricky Jackson replied to TravJ1979's topic in Pro Wrestling
This popped up on my Facebook. Hulk Hogan vs Dusty Rhodes from Japan 1980. First I've seen of this match up. Is this rare stuff? https://www.facebook.com/JapaneseWrestlingClassics/videos/1880493778642549/ -
World Cast: A WCCW Review
Ricky Jackson replied to Ricky Jackson's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Episode #9 https://soundcloud.com/prowrestlingonly/world-cast-9 April 17, 1982 (WCCW 17) It now SOUNDS like the World Class we know and love. It now LOOKS like the World Class we know and love. But...it's...just...not...there...yet. Pete, Kelly, and Johnny are present for the dawn of a new era, but the old era still has some fight left in it, led by good ol' Al (Madril) and his 70s All-Star Band. Plus we have an even stranger time warp as GORGEOUS GEORGE (Grant) and the NATURE BOY (not Rogers or Flair) are live and in black and white from the 1950s! You never know what to expect from World Cast! -
They actually announced that Hogan vs. Flair was going to be the Main Event of WM8. Like on TV, and everything. I remember it very clearly. Then they changed it. Why would they announce it and promote it if it was never really the plan? That sounds like more than a fanboy fantasy to me. It was part of the angle to make Sid pissed off that he was passed over for Hogan and give him more reason to turn on him

I talked about this with my pal Landy on a pod recently, and both of us agreed that Flair vs Hogan at Mania was never the plan and has only ever existed as fanboy fantasy. Most accounts from those in the know say that Hogan vs Sid was practically set in stone the day after Mania 7. Flair fell onto Vince's lap in the summer and they ran with the program vs Hogan in the fall. I really believe it was meant to just be a house show run, as crazy as it might sound to hardcore fans. But remember, house show $ was still a huge part of the company income (still is today I guess but what draws fans to the shows is different). Landy also made a good point that at the time, the Mania main event was always a fresh match that hadn't already made the rounds on the circuit, which points to Hogan vs Sid not vs Flair

Isn't it boring to have everything figured out before the match even happens?

Old gimmicks never die, they just get added to PPV main events at the last second

Really, ECW ruined it for everybody. Well, that and banal early-90s cartoon WWF and WCW booking

There is actually a fair bit of Portland out there in decent quality from the early 80s. The late 70s is mostly the Rose footage, but it's not all in poor quality. I would say Portland's main handicaps are it wasn't a well publicized territory during the peak of the mags and thus not seen as important by many, and the idea of a successful territory built around Buddy Rose, who many only know from his late jobbery period, likely doesn't give it prestige in a lot of fans eyes

Reigns is the most over wrestler they have based on reactions. Babyfaces and heels don't exist anymore in the traditional sense. Most of the top stars are like a successful sports franchise, they are both loved and hated simutaniously

Under-the-radar wrestling book recommendations
Ricky Jackson replied to Cross Face Chicken Wing's topic in Pro Wrestling
As a fan of Piper I thought the book was informative and insightful. A good amount of it does cover his pre-graps life and unveils some of the kayfabe around his commonly-accepted bio e.g. whence his ring name derives. I thought the story of his childhood and youth growing up in Canada was great. The story of his wrestling career, unfortunately, felt rushed at times and was far from the definitive account imo (understandable considering Roddy died in the early stages of the book coming together) -
World Cast: A WCCW Review
Ricky Jackson replied to Ricky Jackson's topic in Publications and Podcasts
They never mentioned it, but maybe because it happened in Fort Worth, where the regional show was taped, it was only hyped in that market. No idea if footage exists. What does exist is Xmas Star Wars 1981, which we plan on reviewing as a bonus around Xmas this year -
Hmmm, that explains the weak selection of Clash tapes at one of the video stores I frequented as a kid. To make it worse, they only offered II, III, and V 😴

Throw up some links fellas

Thesz vs Gagne from 1952 is awesome

World Cast: A WCCW Review
Ricky Jackson replied to Ricky Jackson's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Episode #8 https://soundcloud.com/prowrestlingonly/world-cast-8 (PTBN link to follow) April 3, 1982 (WCCW 15) It's the End of an Era as Pete, Kelly and Johnny bid adieu to the original theme song, the guest color commentator and the darkly lit, one camera set-up Sportatorium. The future awaits! But no rush though, as Black "Blackie" Gordman, Al Madril, Tom "Boogaloo" Shaft, and The Spoiler make sure things still have a distinct 70s flavor (this promotion will be damn hot by the end of the year, we promise!). Catch all this and much more on World Cast! -

Can an admin start the Oct 2017 folder. I don't think just any poster can do it, right? -
Really good show. The reunion of one of my favorite tag teams of all time at the end almost brought a tear to my eye

http://placetobenation.com/mount-olympus-fall-2017-wwe-unreleased-part-1/ Kelly is joined by the legendary Richard Land, who is making his podcast debut, for an in-depth look at WWE's Unreleased DVD. Everything on this three disc set has never been seen by fans before, and Kelly and Landy have a great time digging into it. The first part covers 1986-1991, featuring favorites like Hogan, Savage, Andre, Roberts, Flair, but also a young Owen Hart, and a not-ready-for-the-big-time DINGO WARRIOR! So sit back and enjoy another fun edition of Mount Olympus!

If he puts on a mask and teams with Owens again, even if he doesn't go by El Generico, I'll mark like a 10 year old

World Cast: A WCCW Review

Episode #7 http://placetobenation.com/world-cast-a-wccw-review-episode-7/ March 20, 1982 (WCCW 13) DEAR LORD, AN ACTUAL VERY GOOD (PERHAPS EVEN GREAT) MATCH!!!!! From out of nowhere, Jose Lothario and Busy McGraw shake the Sportatorium to its core and Pete, Kelly and Johnny lose their shit. Also, Al Madril provides the best color commentary yet, and we get footage of Kerry vs Kabuki in front of a heated San Antonio crowd (don't blink cuz you might miss it). All this and more on the latest episode of World Cast! -
Much like Bruno, there was nothing fake about Lance Russell in the fake world of wrestling, and that's what made him great. RIP
-
Yeah, but he was working a main event program with Hogan this time
-
Oney Lorcan vs Lars Sullivan from this week's show was predictably awesome
