[1987-08-22-WWF-MSG, NY] Tito Santana vs Ron Bass
JKWebb replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in August 1987
I totally agree. I fully expected it to go the other way, with Bass dominating the majority of the match with a hot comeback from Tito, but nope! Santana really lets him have it. I thought this was a super unique and awesome match. Highly recommended for Tito Santana fans. I also enjoyed the commentary. I like how they made up for not-so-good piledriver from Bass by saying he didn't get all of it because he was close the ropes and the selling of the fatigued Flying Burrito that "hit the jaw instead of the temple." **** -
It's fun to watch the countdown and loving the "from the voters" section too, ha. I haven't had anyone fall yet!

This is a little off topic, but I finally got the fire stick because of the app and Im really glad I did. It seems like the app is more user friendly than the website, and easier to navigate... for me anyway. To add to some other comments... dont forget about the Punk/Jericho match from Payback too (I think in Chicago)... I remember that being really great. I still think the ladder match with Michaels is probably his best match, but its an interesting thought to say its his best personal performance. I loved it. Im going to watch it again soon with the AXS commentary and see where it lands for me. I really enjoyed every match on the card outside of the YBs match and the Jay White math felt bland to me. I usually am not the hugest fan of car crash matches, but I thought the 4-way was a blast. Up and down a really solid and very fun show. Oh yeah... and i may be switching back to Japanese commentary too when watching live... the star rating stuff really takes me out of it.

I'm mostly just an echo here, but I loved everything about this match. I loved the build, the promos, the moments, and most importantly the match. I had a blast watching this yesterday morning. I think they totally delivered. I would agree with those saying it's Jericho's best match in a long while. I dug the HBK and Punk feuds, and this is definitely around that level. GREAT match. The rope breaks didn't really seem much like rope breaks to me... I thought Kenny was trying to get to the ropes to use them as leverage to help him get out of the submission. In the first one, I liked how Jericho used it as an opportunity to yell at the ref "it's no DQ" etc... so it didn't bother me at all.

If someone was about to suplex you, why would you grab your own partner and hold on to him so he gets suplexed with you? They were trying to sell the back was hurt on Matt - Nick dives out of the ring hits Matt on accident who has the bad back... a few seconds later they are both back in the ring. I don't know... I just don't get the Young Bucks.

I have really loved everything about the Jericho/Omega feud. They totally delivered. Great feud and match. It's the only match I've had time to watch this morning, so I'm going to come back to rest tonight. But, damn, that was cool!

I'm about 20 minutes into the Wrestle Kingdom 12 Preview episode of Talk is Jericho, and it is a pretty interesting listen on how the match came about (so far). For those interested, it might be worth your time. I'm enjoying it.

This is a fun time in the WWF with the debut of the Million Dollar Man, Rick Rude, and talks of Bam Bam. I'm really enjoying the tag division and also loved the Martel match from the most recent show. They did show highlights of the closing moments of the Sherri Martel title win on Prime Time.

This is my favorite place to read about and discuss wrestling by far. It's the only board I've ever participated in. Thanks to everyone! I hope everyone has had a great holiday season and Happy New Year to you all.

I'm going with Brock/AJ as my favorite match of the year. My runner-ups would be the NXT Tag mentioned with AOP/Revival/DIY and Dunne vs. Bate in Chicago. I was there live, so I'm sure that plays a factor... but, I think my favorite moment would be the DIY split at the end of Takeover in Chicago.

My list is in... now looking forward to all the discussion coming out of the results.

[2005-06-18-ROH-Death Before Dishonor III] Austin Aries vs CM Punk
JKWebb replied to supersonic's topic in June 2005
I get pretty burned out on kicking out of finishers, but there is something about that one count that I absolutely love. It sucks me right back into the moment every time. Anyways, super match - unforgettable moment. Just awesome. -
I loved the story of how many more hard hits from Hero can AJ absorb. I agree, this is a great match! Hero's big offense looks devastating! AJ is excellent with his selling and bumping, and Hero shows his great ability to think quick on his feet. As mentioned, the "hit and run" offense from AJ is top notch too. Loved this one.

This is a fun display of athleticism. It starts off as a faced paced battle back and forth, and the only time it really slows down for a little bit is when AJ takes the advantage. He hits a sick Canadian Brainbuster onto Sydal on the outside ring apron. Later in the match Sydal hits a crazy moonsault onto AJ in the crowd. There are lots of cool and creative spots in this. I would say it's fun, but not a great match. It's pretty fast moving and I think the finishing spot looked neat, but didn't feel like a finish. I wasn't exactly sure who was hurting who until AJ rolled through for the pin. Overall, it's entertaining.

I really enjoyed this match. As pointed out, I really liked how there weren't long periods of someone resting outside the ring. I also like the All Japan influence I saw with the Misawa neck chops, the overall stiffness, and the Kawada kicks from Bryan. Overall, I thought this was really fun. It's a pretty fast paced match, but I think they accomplished what they were going for and then some. I think the historical significance it played for the company adds to the aura of it. I may not be as high as everyone here on it overall, but I do think it was great.

ThROH The Years: A ROH retrospective podcast
JKWebb replied to Hobbes's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Coming in late to this, but Ive always wanted to take a deeper dive into ROH. Ive seen a lot of the hyped matches over the years, but gonna attempt this chronologically best I can based on your match recommendations. Thoroughly enjoyed the first episode! Ill catch up. -
I'm the same way as Badger with the old stuff. I thoroughly enjoy the research and reading peoples opinions. I also just love the way wrestling was presented back then - specifically the 80's and early 90's. I do still enjoy the current product. I watch Raw, Smackdown, NXT & a decent amount of NJPW. I usually wait to watch Raw and Smackdown commercial free on Hulu, and a lot times will end up switching to an old episode of WCCW or Prime Time (currently). The old wrestling is my "comfort food" as I've heard some put it. It's really my favorite thing to watch period. I haven't been able to connect with the wrestling styles of the Young Bucks, Kenny Omega and some others, but I have really connected to the styles of the Revival and AJ Styles and some others. I feel like when I watch the older product there isn't anything I'm not connecting to, so I'm just a bigger fan of that style. You know, Elias kind of reminds me of an 80's wrestler with his in-ring style. I think I've seen Marty mention that somewhere too. Anyways, I still like the current product, but currently it doesn't compare to the older footage I seek out on a regular basis.

Well... after thinking about it... I think I'd give the nod to HBK for now... basically for the reasons Micro laid out. I'm really looking forward to seeing what AJ brings us over the next few years and think this will be an even better discussion after he retires.

AJ Styles has been really good for a long time, but since 2014 he's been the best in the world in my eyes. It may have started earlier than that. There are gaps in my viewing and I'm not the best with dates, but I do remember specifically loving his 2005 in TNA (but, of course that was 12 years ago). One thing that I think is interesting when looking at both of their careers side-by-side is that I definitely think Shawn was a better wrestler in the early stages of career. I absolutely love the Midnight Rockers stuff in the AWA and on into the WWF as The Rockers. Someone mentioned that AJ has him beat in all categories outside of tag work. I'm not sure I agree with that, but I do think Shawn was a better wrestler from the get. As I said, I haven't seen the entire career of AJ, so I don't know what types of tag opportunities that he has had or that it matters. But, I do think they are both great and have both been a huge part of some of my all-time favorite matches and moments in this business. I don't want to vote because I don't have an answer. I think the fact that I don't have an answer really speaks loudly of AJ over the past few years though.
