[1996-02-18-WWF-In Your House VI] Shawn Michaels vs Owen Hart
Makai Club #1 replied to Loss's topic in February 1996
Call me nit-picky but the commentary is very annoying. Vince’s love for Michals on commentary makes me sick. Not even JR praises Austin to the extent that Vince does. It was very distracting. Thankfully, Lawler is on game. My favourite part of the match was Jim Cornette inches away of kicking Michaels before the ref sees him and he stops just in time. The timing of it was great, as way Cornette’s reaction. A few things I liked about the match: I dug Michaels’ sell of the enziguri, a call back to the angle. And Owen’s work on top is pretty solid though. Nothing outstanding but he gets heat on Michaels and builds to the eventual comeback well. There were a few spots that were poorly set up like the initial moonsault to Owen on the outside with Owen seeing Michaels whilst taking his time walking into the spot. The match really doesn’t have a ton of animosity that the feud and angle was built upon. Michaels says he wants revenge but it more that happy to dance and play with Owen instead of actually getting revenge. Just poor from him. From someone who is acclaimed for “storytelling” basic things like this seem lost on him in this match. In saying that, Michaels had a fun comeback to end the match. ***1/2- 17 replies

[1996-02-18-WWF-In Your House VI] Bret Hart vs Diesel (Cage)
Makai Club #1 replied to Loss's topic in February 1996
I wasn’t digging this at all. Totally low energy from start to finish. The match was worked fine, as most Hart matches are but this wasn’t very fun or engaging to watch. It wasn’t exactly slow but it felt very off. Not a good match. The finish was a good way to further Diesel vs Taker. **1/4 -
WWE TV 24/06 - 30/06 Is Ricochet a better version of Ospreay
Makai Club #1 replied to KawadaSmile's topic in WWE
Barring Ambrose not being in WWE, this sounds very much like WWE 2015. It's scary similar. I thought it was established already that Seth is a BTEC Triple H without having the best parts of Triple H. -
[1994-02-20-WCW-Superbrawl IV] Arn Anderson vs Steven Regal
Makai Club #1 replied to Loss's topic in February 1994
Most people like to say certain matches are 70's style type matches with zero cause to say so but this was totally that. The slow, deliberate pace they set out, the structure of the match, the style they wrestled, the way they transitioned from move to move (kinda like ZSJ tries to do now but they do it much, much better). The match itself was excellent. I think the lack of heat from the crowd was a problem, not a big one but it was very jarring to watch a match that's virtually done in near silence. Arn's work on the leg and arm was very good, as was Regal's work on the neck and arm of Arn. Tons of fight and struggle to earn every hold they got. The stiff shots by Regal met with the explosive, high impact moves by Arn. I dug the finish too. Great, underrated match. ****1/4- 29 replies

This was a good rumble, for the first half of the match. There was tons of great stuff. Everything involving Lawler, Razor chasing the 1-2-3 Kid. Vader potatoing everyone and going face to face with Gorilla Monsoon. All that ruled, then the match fell into a noticeable lull after that and never got good again until the finish which was great. Michaels having to super kick Diesel before he could realize what’s happening was a good finish. It just needed a better second half. ***3/4

[1996-01-21-WWF-Royal Rumble] Goldust vs Razor Ramon
Makai Club #1 replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
It's pretty wild that when WWE signed the son of Dusty Rhodes, they gave him the Goldust gimmick. Just the idea of giving a famous wrestler's son a gimmick like that, it's odd. It'd be like giving Randy Orton the gimmick when he first joined. Now I love the Goldust gimmick. It got hate at the time due to connotations, sadly, but I dug the ambiguity of the gimmick, when it stayed that way, at least. The match ruled, too. Some excellent character work by Goldust that was blended into the match very well. Razor showed tremendous fire and aggression in his offence and held his own with Goldust technically. Goldust sold and bumped well. Great performances all round. The finish didn’t make Goldust look all that great as he needed interference to win. It did do a great job of allowing Razor to move on for the meanwhile. ***3/4 -
[2019-06-22-Tokyo Joshi Pro] Miu Watanabe vs Yuka Sakazaki
Makai Club #1 posted a topic in June 2019
Tokyo Princess Cup – Round 2 Very good little match build around Yuka working over Miu's arm in pretty Yuka fashion, unique techniques and all. Miu's selling is fine for the most part but she is a great underdog and puts up a hell of a struggle. ***1/2- 1 reply

[2019-05-19-WWE-Money in the Bank] Seth Rollins vs A.J. Styles
Makai Club #1 replied to paul sosnowski's topic in May 2019
The early part of the match was fine, the obligatory standoffish stuff. But once they began actually trying to win, it got better. I loved Seth actually throwing himself into his topes rather than the usual push suicide dives that he does, which usually look awful. Seth doing the Kawada kicks surprised me. They didn't look good but I appreciate the effort took to try something different, at least. Then the match turned into the usual Seth match match which doesn't do anything for me but AJ's great selling keeps me into it. The counter into the Styles clash was slick like butter, but of course, it doesn't finish the match. But one thing that stands out is both guys great chemistry together. Fully expect more matches from this pair. And I kinda like that idea. Good match but it really doesn't scream out GREAT to me. ***1/4 -
[2019-06-09-NJPW-Dominion] Dragon Lee vs Will Ospreay
Makai Club #1 replied to paul sosnowski's topic in June 2019
The match brought out some of the worst aspects of both guys game. The no selling/dramatically stopping spots can only be done so much in a match but they had some great sequences. Dragon Lee's tope was crazy, the speed and velocity behind it was incredible. Fun finish too. ***1/2 -
[2019-06-09-NJPW-Dominion] Kota Ibushi vs Tetsuya Naito
Makai Club #1 replied to paul sosnowski's topic in June 2019
A great start to the match. Naito going all heel on the Osaka crowd was excellent. Then the fans cheered him and that was the end of that. It's clear that they didn't really get what was good about their last few matches and decided to keep the neck bumps and none of the work in between them. Lacked substance, in my opinion. I desperately tried to get into it but nope, was either bored out of my mind or wincing. Not a good match. ** -
[2019-06-09-NJPW-Dominion] Kazuchika Okada vs Chris Jericho
Makai Club #1 replied to Microstatistics's topic in June 2019
I thought Jericho would do wise to do a Jericho match rather than an Okada match but the first half of this match was god awful and that's basically a Jericho style of match. Once it turned into a normal match, this improved tremendously. Jericho had some nice chops. Okada took some nice bumps. There were some iffy sequences that looked awkward and slow though, so it wasn't all good. The finish was a show, to say the least. The post-match angle sucked and it was a bad way to end the show. It's been a while since the fans rejected an ending. **- 7 replies

[1987-07-11-UWF-Oklahoma City] Barry Windham vs Dick Murdoch
Makai Club #1 replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in July 1987
It's a shame that this is JIP because if this was a full match and this is 5 star territory, legitimately. The punches, the selling, the work on the arm by Murdoch, the heat. Everything was simply great. Murdoch mixes bumping around for Windham with kicking his ass pillar to post perfectly well. Windham looked so great in the match - what a wrestler prime Windham is. The finish wasn't great though. So missing half the match and a bad finish prvents it's potential which is unfourtunte because this is a classic. ****1/2 -
[1992-04-05-WWF-Wrestlemania VIII] Bret Hart vs Roddy Piper
Makai Club #1 replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
“BYE, BYE” What a promo by Piper pre match. Fucking love him. Piper won the title from the Rumble after beating the Mountie who won the belt from Bret on a house show days before (Bret had a fever) and they’ve built to this. The heat for this match is very high. Which stuns me because it’s face vs face. Both switch the subtle heel roles in the match with momentum constantly switch very so seamlessly. They incorporate the styles of both guys very well and the match is filled with clever spots and make the match as good as it is. The blood adds a ton as well. The finish whilst not the first time was used (the earliest use of the finish was Pedro Morales vs Ivan Koloff the title change) but this is probably the most popular and would be used by Bret in a more famous match in 1996 w/ Austin at Survivor Series. Like I said tremendous match. ****- 38 replies

[2007-10-07-WWE-No Mercy] HHH vs Randy Orton (Last Man Standing)
Makai Club #1 replied to Loss's topic in October 2007
No wasting time by Orton who went straight for Triple H’s injured ribs. Loved the urgency and awareness by Orton to not only know how to hurt Triple H but doesn’t wait for HHH to get any advantage like he did earlier that night. Orton did some great work on the ribs but added his own twist with it, like bringing in some rope cables and choking HHH out with them ala the Rumble Umaga/Cena match whilst locking on a body scissors. Another thing that the match had going for it is that they didn’t go full on excess with the 10 counts. None of the spots were too big for it to be unbelievable. They paced out the high spots really well. Triple H’s selling and well timed comebacks added a ton of drama to the match. The spot with the Crotch-chop/HHH super hulk up after he catches Orton doing the Punt was fantastic. You get a big sense of fulfillment seeing Triple H kick Orton’s ass just because he is so despisable - a huge credit to both men’s performance. And the way that transitions to Triple H getting caught with a flash RKO on the table was superb. One of the better Last Man Standing matches WWE has ever done. Fantastic from both men. Great selling, great pacing, tons of entertaining spots and a great culmination of the show’s overarching storyline. ****1/2 -
[2007-10-07-WWE-No Mercy] Fit Finlay vs Rey Mysterio
Makai Club #1 replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in October 2007
This is a classic Rey match. Rey ruled in the underdog ruled that’s essentially his own with his selling and bumping. Mixed with Finlay’s brutal beatdown made this very compelling to watch. There is some pretty neat counters with Finlay countering a headscissors takeover with a backbreaker and Finlay hitting a nasty back elbow to counter the 619. The finish was pure genius. Finlay takes a nasty bump on the floor and fakes being KO’d only to attack Rey after the match. Wonderful stuff. ***1/2 -
[2007-10-07-WWE-No Mercy] HHH vs Umaga
Makai Club #1 replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in October 2007
Damn, Umaga was amazing in this match. He knows not only to be a monster but look vulnerable and making the opponent stand out too. His work on the ribs was absolutely fantastic. Everything looked so painful and impact. Triple H’s selling was excellent from start to finish. The ending was very good with Umaga being the cause for the loss rather than being bested by HHH. It’s obviously not positioned to be a great match so it was good to see it deliver in the way it was supposed to and progressed the story of the night. ***1/2 -
[2007-10-07-WWE-No Mercy] Randy Orton vs HHH
Makai Club #1 replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in October 2007
A good start to the match with Orton being a total chickenshit, be fitting of a champion that got awarded the title instead of winning it (HHH didn’t do that though because he is da game). The match turns into a basic TV match with Orton working over HHH which is fine as the crowd hates Orton and loves Triple H so it works in the PPV setting. Triple H actually bumps and sells relatively well for Orton which confirms that HHH would be a perfect face if he was consistently likeable. Orton’s selling was excellent at times too. The finish as fine and given how WWE uses the roll up, it protects Orton in a way. ***1/2 -
Excellent match. Easily Shawn Michaels' best singles match. Maybe Taker's too. Although I'm leaning towards Brock No Mercy 2002. Everything in the prior months culminated here. Shawn being a total chicken shit, Taker being an ass kicker to no end. Kane! Shawn really put in a shift. His selling and bumping, usually aspects of his game that I dislike, was fantastic. It all made sense and put over the story perfectly. Taker looked superb too. His punches looked much better. Had tons of aggression and hatred in his assaults. It's near perfect however, I have a rule about whether it gets the full five or not - if I have to think about whether it is or not, then it's not. ****3/4

Definitely a a breath of fresh air. I always wished New Japan would be open to more outsiders in the G1's and KENTA and Moxley are as about as Outside as you can get.

What was with the five star rating that he gave Ospreay vs Scurll? It had the same exact bump - crocked nech bump on an apron. Dumb that.

[2003-10-19-WWE-No Mercy] Kurt Angle vs John Cena
Makai Club #1 replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in October 2003
Good match. You could see from this match that Cena was becoming a good wrestler and big prospect. Angle was okay, he was breaking down and it was at this point where he was beginning just to be there for his matches. The good performance was Cena, Angle was just along for the ride imo. ***1/4 -
It has a reputation for being one of the best survivor series tag matches of all time. Does it reach that expectation? Heck no. Quite opposite, I think it may just be one of the most overrated matches of all time. However that doesn't mean I hate this match because despite the plodding, forgettable first two thirds of the match, the match towards the end was amazing. HBK giving his all in a great face in peril performance against 3 guys. Great selling (I know, shock right), awesome hope spots, drama and the melancholy feeling of it all. Man, I get down just thinking about it. Good ending doesn't make this the best of the best. ***

[1995-07-24-AJPW-Summer Action Series] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada
Makai Club #1 replied to Loss's topic in July 1995
Excellent match. Great start with the two exchanging counters before Kawada recks Misawa with a nasty kick to the face to take control. Kawada delivers a nasty beat down of Misawa with his various kicks and suplex variations. Misawa's selling and bumping was sensational and Kawada's too. The finishing stretch was pretty great. Riveting action from start to finish. ****1/2- 17 replies

Only three days from their London classic which is a must see for anyone. The Rougeaus are perfect as the chicken shit heel team that is hateable, Jacques especially, and they do just that for the Paris crowd. The Rockers however lack that usual energy that they usually have. And I wasn’t all that interested in The Rougeau’s beat-down of Michaels either. The Rougeaus were too one note in their offence, with them doing nothing, but a long front face lock spot. It lacked the creativity of their last match. It was very uncompelling to watch outside of The Rougeaus strutting and posing and getting heat from the crowd. Pretty disappointing. **1/2
