[2000-12-31-Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye] Kazushi Sakuraba vs Kendo Kashin
Edwin replied to GOTNW's topic in December 2000
Just to add some proper context to this. The reason Kashin is wearing a gi to this match, is a tribute to the great 90 minute fight between Sakuraba and Royce Gracie from PRIDE. Royce wore a gi to that fight and Sakuraba was smart enough to use that against Royce. That's why there's a huge "oh" pop when Sakuraba uses Kashin's gi pants to fold him up. Also the reason there's such a heavy emphasis on the kimura is because Sakuraba had previously beaten both Royler and Renzo with the kimura, inclusive he broke Renzo's arm with it. The match itself is underwhelming. It was more so a way of getting Sakuraba on the card and having him display all of his PRIDE signature moves in a worked environment -- e.g. spinning his opponent when they were on their backs, mounted Mongolian chops, kimura, etc. Kashin was very predictable, lazy and everything he did looked very weak. Sakuraba on the other hand landed some great looking punches in the corner, plus he got all of his great looking PRIDE signature stuff in even got some dives to the floor. Forgettable.-

I'm sure I dug this more than most people will. I thought this was a masterful performance from Hashimoto. Him chopping the bigger Goodridge down with leg kicks, his selling of Goodridge's somewhat held back punches, his selling/facial expressions during Goodridge's rolling kneebar and him finally getting frustrated with Goodridge's clean breaks and blasting him with a headbutt and then landing the grounded headbutts, etc. was pretty awesome. I thought Goodridge did pretty good for having such limited experience in pro-wrestling. Him getting the full mount was pretty neat and got a pretty neat pop from the crowd.

Was at SDL with the wife... Had a good time. Mojo and Ryder had a dark match before the show which Mojo won. Thought the women's match dragged, but the post match stuff with Charlotte, Naomi and Becky got a huge pop. Weird there was no Nakamura or Roode, but the post show dark match was Styles, Nakamura and Roode vs. Owens, Zayn and Mahal. I'm not a huge WWE fan (plus I'm dead tired and have to head to work early in the AM), so I headed out during Tozawa vs. TJP. A lot of people hit the door once the SDL tapings were over.

Im calling Jazzy Gabert as a surprise entrant into the womans Royal Rumble. Alundra Blayze possibly too.

Tye Dilliger will enter as #10 again as they burry the joke to the ground as per usual.

This seems like it was blast live, but it came off really bad on video. I'm a huge fan of WarGames and had high expectations of this, but this was really bad. I don't mind the minimum details such as the cage not having a roof or it only be three on three. The eliminations felt really rushed once the Match Beyond started. I also don't get them going for eliminations before the Match Beyond began and the commentators saying there couldn't be any eliminations until the Match Beyond began. I thought Quack looked really bad. His kicks looked awful and the commentator continued trying to put them over as the stiffest strikes he's ever seen. His cage dives looked really bad. Namely the first one where Jake Daniels just popped up and no sold it. I guess the earlier periods where Flash and Dino actually used the cage and got a gusher from using it were the highlights, but aside from that, there wasn't really much else to like. Very disappointing.

This was a manly match. That collar and elbow tie up is an example of what it should look like. Both guys followed by bringing the brutality and working with intensity. Those strike exchanges before the Ki Cutter and the series of lariats were great. The finish sucked, but the post match chaos added to the brutality of this, so it made up for the horrible finish. ****1/4

This is the most un-Hit Squad Hit Squad match ever. Instead of potato throwing and chest bruising, they work like they're invading 1980's territory heels and its awesome. This really showed their versatility from working and stiffing Low Ki and the other crew of Nuyoricans to working with some fat old school old men. ***
