WWE Network... It's Here

Indeed. It's somewhat funny that there will be a GWF episode uploaded next week before there's any AWA on the network. :)

Hopefully its a episode where Waltman wrestles Lynn.

No, it's an episode where Chaz ends up looking like a total idiot (I guess that's every episode with Chaz though) and a lot of Ebony Experience/Harlem Heat.

They have uploaded a very varied and cool mix of stuff... I'd advise anyone that wants to watch this to do so during this month... the 12 Days of Attitude christmas section has seemingly vanished with all its videos, though that may be temporary.

Either way it's quite a treat to watch some of this old stuff in such beautiful quality.

Maybe they have just moved the videos to their proper sections.

They probably do something similar to what they did for WWE 24/7, where all the categories we see are folders on the server end and when stuff disappears they just make the folders hidden. The stuff that was there is still uploaded, I'd expect it to be up in other categories once they take off the Christmas themed intros (kind of like how the Nitros disappeared for a day or two while they did those).

I have such fond memories of watching Global after school as a kid. That was my first exposure to Cactus Jack. I literally haven't gone back to watch any Global since it originally aired, so this should at least be interesting :)

It's probably you and me and no one else around here that have those memories of Global, with the Cartel and the Dark Patriot and being pissed off at the MLB expansion draft preempting it.

I was much younger but I remember watching it after school. My dad would tape the UWF shows on SportsChannel for me, too.

As to how WWE got the rights to Global, wouldn't it have just been part and parcel with the World Class deal?

No. The Von Erichs owned the pre-SuperClash World Class footage, which is what WWE owns.

The footage after the Jarrett buyout (from Ken Mentall, who had bought World Class from Fritz), and the USWA Texas footage, ended up in Max Andrews' hands after Jarrett closed shop. Andrews produced Global and Wild West and my guess is that he sold all of this to the Savoldis.

WWE likely owns GWF and USWA because of early Cactus Jack, Booker T, Sean Waltman, JBL and most importantly Steve Austin. My guess is that WWW and post 88 WCCW were not of prime interest to the WWE at the time. The Savoldis and the McMahons are close so I'm sure that the footage will someday all end up being owned by WWE but acquiring old minor libraries may not be one of their main priorities at this time unless they can produce a DVD or two (Memphis would be an exception here obviously).

They have to have some interest in USWA Texas considering Steve Austin had plenty of matches there.

How does the deal on the term WWF stand?

I know that all the scratch stuff is unblurred and they say the word WWF now but any details on when this all happened?

Does this mean the next time they do a old school they can use the proper 80s WWF logo instead of the F just cut off the side as I recall Cena having it on one of his old shirts.

Are there any big companies left from the past WWE doesnt own?

I gather they dont own Memphis pre 2000.

The major remaining territory era North American libraries that they do not own (ignoring Mexico) are:

Memphis Wrestling: by far the most valuable collection! They will buy this as soon as the ownership deal is settled.

World Wrestling Council: it was rumoured that WWE wanted this last year. The Colon’s promotion is cash strapped so this will eventually end up being owned by WWE whenever they decide that they need footage in Spanish language. This may be a gold mine if the older stuff has been preserved half decently.

Savoldi collection: Jarrett WCCW, Wild West and IWCCW, as well as probably a lot of random shit: they may have WIN masters (1989 lucha libre promotion), Venezuela wrestling tours, early 90s Carolinas indies (NAWA/SAPW) with Shamrock and Tatanka and other low value stuff. I just hope that someday somebody finds a pristine copy of the WIN bout with Eddy, Mando, Chavo and Hector teaming together.

St. Louis: only the last few years are available. Not sure who owns this. Matysik?

Houston Wrestling: not sure who owns this but apparently somebody does. I wonder if they still do have film of Lou Thesz vs Kintaro Oki.

ClassicWrestling.com: this is owned by Todd Okerlund and partners so it will end up owned by WWE someday. Basically it’s the old PM Film library which has been marketed for two decades in different forms: Blanchard’s Southwest, Einhorn’s IWA, whatever survives from Bruiser and Sheik’s territories, Abrams’ UWF, Poffo’s ICW, some Memphis, some old Black and white wrestling and they may own the few tapes from Hawaii/Polynesian wrestling that are still around. I believe they also own Texas All Star and mid 80s Central States (WWA) because bits and pieces of that used to be part of the old PM Film tape lists.

Canadian Wrestling: whatever survives from Montreal (International and Grand Prix) apparently seems to be owned by Scott D’Amore. This may include Canadian AWA and indies like Tony Condello’s promotion.

Anything else, such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Portland, comes from private recordings and not actual masters. I don’t believe there’s anything left from the Welch/Fuller territory either. Besides that there are private owners of individual masters from Memphis or Mid Atlantic: Jim Cornette may be the biggest individual owner. Also, there was a quick mention in the Observer a few months ago of WWE acquiring the tapes of a gentleman who shot his own handhelds and may or may not have the only Flair vs Andre match on tape.

They reached a deal with the wildlife group shortly before the network launch, having realised how much of a problem the blurring would be when they were showing Attitude Era stuff.

They haven't, it's all gone. SmackDown pilot, Sunday Night Heats, etc.

Apart from the Smackdown Pilot what other interesting stuff did it have? I think I recall a Raw but unsure what else.

Not a lot, a couple of Raws I think and some pre-PPV Heats, the Halftime match with Rock vs. Mankind was one of them, which made me hopeful the first year of Heat would get uploaded. The rest was just Raw clips, like the Corporate Rumble from early '99.

I just threw on a random World Class that has Bill Mercer meeting with Scandor Akbar at his home where Akbar explains how his OPEC dealings are tied into his wrestling interests and it's glorious.

Edit: How cool is it that World Class was doing heel gangs vs. heel gangs angles all the way back in 1983? They really were ahead of their time.

Thats probably one of my fav Foley/Rock matches and the comedy Rock did in that match when he answered the phone.

Even the search results on the network bring me to the match just you cant view it. Wouldnt it be best to just remove it instead of results listing it?

Two things here ...

1. I'd always wondered who owned the Abrams UWF library. Now I know.

2. As far as Wild West Wrestling, I do recall there being a match on the most recent Mick Foley DVD from Wild West Wrestling on there. Not sure if it was perhaps from Mick's personal collection but it was quite interesting to see something from a random territory like that on there.

I can't put over the Mid-Atlantic episode with Rufus R Jones vs. Dory from July 13 1983 over enough . We get great promos, the best being Harley's bounty on Flair promo. We get a good Steamboat/Youngblood vs Briscos match that was perfect for tv. A fun Rotundo spotlight match, and some other good stuff.

Digging through the Black History Month interviews and promos. It is obvious that the Ernie Ladd Georgia promo is ripped from Youtube, but now I am obsessed with what else is in the master tape for that Thunderbolt Patterson promo from Central States 1977. That one looked like it came from an actual master tape.

I am also going nuts seeing all of the old filmed footage they show on the early TNT episodes. If at some point they had a Dory Funk Jr-Red Bastien Texas Death Match from Amarillo for a TNT episode 30 years ago and all the late 60s/early 70s Philadelphia Arena film they used for that and some of the early Coliseum Video tapes, I am going crazy wondering what other film is in the vault and probably just sitting untouched due to cost-benefit of converting all the old film.
