Sidebottom
I thought this would be a nice bit of fun as I have just finished reading an essay (in short) about how we tend to look at the time period when you first fell in love with rose tinted glasses. The essay was geared to a connection with music, but seeing as that is secondary to me... ;-) My first girlfriend was in 1999 and I have great memories of that time period. In relation to wrestling, I'm sure this probably did help me enjoy what is in hindsight some dubious wrestling. I was so happy in life, I have very specific memories of coming home from dates to watch my recorded Raw's and monotone Rock speeches! soup23
Actually, I am the opposite. My wife not being a wrestling fan the two most prominent times of my dating life (November 2005-started dating and Fall 2008 - got married) are pretty big blind spots for almost everything. Now on the contrary, since having my son, I have greatly enjoyed a lot of the wrestling I have watched but feel more disconnected with the current product since the previous two periods I mentioned. Moral of the story is that maybe I am an enigma but the correlation doesn't exist for me.
Matt D
Yeah i uh, came out of the wrestling closet to my wife of 4 years (at that point, and a few more of living together) last fall.
soup23
That is commitment Matt, but she was probably starting to notice your love affair with bock anyway.
Matt D
My (then) 11 year old stepson could do a better figure four than the Miz too, which should have been a sign, but really, everyone can do a better figure four than the miz. BillThompson
When I first started dating, I have no idea, honestly. Probably Attitude Era, so I really wasn't paying attention to much wrestling at the time. When I met my wife I wasn't watching wrestling at all. It's only this year that I've picked it back up again, and the wife is not happy. She absolutely loathes wrestling, so it's pretty much only a me thing. Johnny Sorrow
September 1984, The Rock n Wrestling era had just started, Valentine broke Tito's leg and took the IC title, and a 14 year old Johnny Sorrow made out with a girl and felt a boob for the first time in a movie theatre showing "All Of Me" with Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin. Johnny Sorrow
It doesn't have a happy ending. Not for lack of trying. A few weeks later in the same theatre you'd have thought she was milking a goat. Oy, the squeezing !
JerryvonKramer
That is commitment Matt, but she was probably starting to notice your love affair with bock anyway. I wonder how she worked that out ... Matt: I've been thinking, I'd like to try something new ... Mrs. D: Yes, dear .... Matt: It's called "King of the Mountain" ... and ... er *producing perfect 'Teddy Boy' blonde wig, white suit, and replica AWA belt* ... I'd like you to wear this. Grimmas
The only change is watching wrestling more when my wife is busy (or out or at work) as opposed to every night.
artDDP
I started dating during the "Attitude Era". Only once did I suggest the girl I was seeing watch "Raw". It was spring of 1999 and WCW was god awful and there was no way I was going to try to convince a girl to check out ECW. She didn't care and it didn't work out. It took me another twelve years to find a girl who actually enjoyed wrestling.
Childs
I'd pretty much strayed from wrestling when I first started dating in '92-'93. But I was back watching the Monday night wars when I started dating my future wife in '96. I think she assumed I was a geek about multiple things (accurate) and didn't care about the details, though I'm sure she didn't foresee me becoming a more intense fan in my 30s than I was in my 20s. She went to Starcade '98 with me. I'm much more apt to remember fooling around in her Oldsmobile with Oasis on the radio or watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer in her dorm room. Wrestling never held that kind of place as a shared experience. She's remained indifferent to it but has never begrudged me my interest. I think she likes that I get intensely curious when I'm excited about my hobbies or at least accepts that it's intrinsic to my nature. Can't ask for more than that, especially now that we're juggling two kids.
khawk20
I had my first date around the time Hulk Hogan first challenged Nick Bockwinkel for the AWA title...April of 1982, more or less.
jdw
Date is a fuzzy thing to define, but let's say going out to the movies and having a semi-steady girl... Bockwinkel was in his first reign, Harley was the NWA Champ, Bob was the WWF Champ, Inoki was the NWF Champ and Baba was the PWF Champ. That's kind of a cool batch of dynastic champs. EricR
Oh man, I remember very well what wrestling was happening when I started dating my first real serious girlfriend. I have never hid my pro wrestling love from any lady I dated, and so this girl and I had gone on several dates in April 2000, and by then she knew I was into pro wrestling but had seen hardly any wrestling herself (she knew the Rock and a couple others, just because that was about the most mainstream wrestling had ever been). So I was out of town for a few days in early May because my buddy and I were seeing Beck's Midnight Vultures tour (still arguably greatest concert ever) and she happened to tune into some wrestling while I was gone. I saw her a few days later and she mentioned she had watched about 10 minutes of pro wrestling and was having a hard time seeing what I liked in it. I had no clue what she had seen since I hadn't watched any of that week's shows yet. She had been flipping through the channels during the Sting/Vampiro graveyard segment. iamthedoctor
When I first started dating are we talking during School or after you leave High School? If we are talking during school then Hulk Hogan was the WWF Champion but if we are talking after school it would ben Shawn Michaels & Sid are feuding over the WWF title.
