Your Wrestling Regrets

Since we're doing a few of these sorts of threads, I thought I'd go with this one. I think there's some level of tone to be sought for here. There's a line between "I wish Owen Hart didn't die!" and "I'd have been really curious to see the Owen/Blue Blazer IC title run that was rumored in 99."

- I know he wasn't a good person. I know it, but I do wish that Buddy Rose had lived just a couple more years in order to reap the benefits of the tape library he unleashed upon the world. From all accounts, he was someone who put so much weight on his wrestling and his star power and that's why the tapes exist in the first place, because of his ego, an ego which was not really fed for the last twenty or so years of his life. If he'd made it a few more years there would have been people who really came forward and understood how good he was and talked about it and I think that would have been one of the things he would have enjoyed most in the world.

- I think it's a shame that Warrior and Jake never had a match in 91 after their big Trust Me angle.

- I wish we had another year or two of Austin/Pillman as a team. It's funny that Austin goes on so much about how they never keep tag teams together anymore when he was basically in the tag team of the 90s and they lasted less than a year.

Im kind of taking this thread in another direction specifically selfish to myself.

- I wish I would have been born earlier. This is cliche but growing up in the geographically area that I did, if I could have hit my driving years in 1977 like my dad, I would have had a great amount of wrestling within a 60 mile radius to go to. Every time I look at those great Omni cards, I get a tad sad.

- I should have went to WM 24. I had the funds and time at that point in my life as a senior in college. I just didn't have anyone to room with and decided against taking the trip solo. Being their for the Flair moment and Raw afterward would have been a great antedote in my wrestling fandom.

I wish they had never split up the Shield.

A regret of mine is that we did not get to see the Shield square off with The Wyatt Family for an extended period of time. I'm talking upwards of five years, on and off. I am probably lower on Bray Wyatt and the Wyatt Family more than most (though I am a big supporter of Luke Harper), but the feud with the Shield was the only point of their run that I was invested in the team whatsoever. It was excellent while it lasted, but had the potential to be something very special had they not panicked and broke up the Shield. I'm still not sure why they decided to split the Wyatt Family up either, but at least their amicable parting of the ways leaves the option for them to reform at any point. It would take years and years for any sort of Shield reunion to be at all believable (see Evolution in 2014). Overall, the Shield was excellent while it lasted, but I feel there was a lot of missed opportunities for both teams. You could have kept the Wyatt Family together for at least another five years and then given Rowan a Virgil-esque babyface turn.

Eddy Guerrero/Chris Jericho "Eh & Wey" tag team should have been a full-time tag team for at least a couple years if not more. As babyfaces they were the second coming of the Rockers (see Faces of Fear match). As heels, they were the late 90s version of the Midnights (see the Brian Hildebrand Tribute). WCW were ultimate cockteases.

Faces of Fear being pushed as the dominant ace WCW tag team of the late 90s would have been awesome. They deserved more time to shine and be remembered as one of the all time great tag teams.

Personally, not going to Wrestlemania XXX. I went to XXVIII and XXIX and had a ball, but neither card was all that great. The decision whether or not to go to Mania is always decided at the Rumble and the prospect of Batista/Orton meant fuck this shit. I am going to save my money. Of course, it goes on to be one of the best Manias of all time and the ultimate feel good story. Fucking WWE, you suck! :P :p :P

My second trip to Japan was to be built around this:

08/30/95 AJW "Champions Night" in Osaka (Kong-Kansai, Double Inoues vs Toyota & Hasegawa)
http://www.cagematch.net/?id=1&nr=38461

09/01/95 Pancrase at Ryogoku Kokugikan (Rutten vs Funaki)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995_in_Pancrase#Pancrase:_1995_Anniversary_Show

09/02/95 AJW "Destiny" at Budokan (Hokuto-Toyota)
http://prowrestlinghistory.com/supercards/japan/women/ajw/budokan.html#090295

09/03/95 AJW 1995 Grand Prix Final at Korakuen Hall (Toyota-Hotta)
http://www.cagematch.net/?id=1&nr=38463

Then there was this:

09/10/95 AJPW at Budokan (Misawa-Taue)
http://prowrestlinghistory.com/supercards/japan/alljapan/bud95.html#0995

Not sure if we both would have stayed for the 9/10 card, but I would have looked to extend it to see a TC match live. There were almost certainly more shows in Tokyo between 9/3 & 9/10 to fill in the time.

Dave got a chest cold, wasn't sharp in getting to the doctor quickly to get on some anti-biotic, so we had to shelve it.

Missed one of my favorite joshi matches: Kong-Kansai with Big Red on the line and Kong finally putting her over to let an outsider hold the belt. And never got to see a TC match.

* * * * *

Beyond that, regret never getting to drag Hoback and Yohe to Japan on the two trips that I did take.

Would've loved to see the WCW-NBC specials in 1999 if the NBA strike wouldn't have been settled. Possible Hogan-Goldberg rematch, Savage's return, Piper-Raven (this was definitely planned), and Dennis Rodman-Carmen Electra getting divorced on national TV on Valentine's Day. Would've gotten a ton of press and probably big ratings. A bunch of angles that were stalled or dropped when that fell through. Also the Bret Hart-Kevin Nash match on Jay Leno that was supposed to happen the night after Owen passed away.

I have so many wrestling regrets. My biggest is letting my fandom lapse instead of trying to find new promotions to watch or different watching projects to keep me interested. Looking at everything that is available now I get this feeling I won't ever get to watch all the things I really want to.

16 year old me was absolutely disgusted that WWF didn't do more with Mike Awesome in 2001. Looking back they were probably right, he's not aged well at all. And I don't mean in the "dead people can get older" sense. I also wanted to see a proper Dustin Runnels babyface run in 1998 and am gutted that it didn't happen. Funk/Bradshaw/Dustin vs Lawler/Too Much off Shotgun Challenge is one of my matches of 1998. Of all time in fact. Super fun.

I regret that I sometimes forget to pay attention to some of the stuff that is going on in my local scene. In the past year, I missed out at seeing Atlantis and Blue Panther in a norteño night club, and Negro Navarro and Solar at a local flea market in a tiny town.

I'm perennially gutted that Rick Rude vs. Vader never happened due to Rude's back injury, and I still harbour resentment about not winning tickets to SummerSlam '92, nor knowing that they were actually on sale at a toy shop 30 seconds from my front door and that a friend and his dad went on the coach trip down who could have chaperoned me (I was 8 and live at the opposite end of the country). My friend isn't much of a fan anymore, which makes it hurt harder.

Are you Lee who used to be on the UKFF then? If so, awesome. I still occasionally call Eric Bischoff Eric Fishshop.

How long would it take to catch up?

I'm fascinated by how everyone that posts here seems to be at different stages with stuff they've seen/want to see. Shoe wrote in another thread 'I love finding footage of one of my favorite wrestlers that I've never seen before. I've watched a lot of footage so finding something new to me is such a treat'.

I'll be at that stage in 2030....maybe.
