Whoa, baby! I don't know anyone with a heart who didn't love DaMericanDream. One of the most endearingly egotistical people anywhere, not just wrestling--I always loved his line during the Flair/Windham WWW match about how "only a commentator the stature of DaMericanDreamDustyRhodes can call this caliber of match."

If I can cheesily paraphrase from his most famous promo--now, this time, all the love you've given us, we will repay you. Let's reach out and gather for it. Love ya, Big Dust.

Dusty was an essential part of my childhood growing up in South Carolina in the 80's. He had the gift of gab and was extremely relatable. Dusty was my first wrestling hero and I lived and died with his every move. Dusty and Optimus Prime were my big heroes at the time but Dusty had a bionic elbow so -1 for Prime. One of the worst punishments I ever got was losing JCP wrestling for a month on TV from my Dad after my brother and I tried to recreate the Horsemen parking lot angle on each other with an aluminum bat. I would have rather gotten a spanking.

I'm on vacation with my wife and all my friends (and even a few pastors) are texting me offering condolences like I'm in the Rhodes family or something. My wife has no clue who Dusty is but is realizing how important he was from the texts and items on CNN and ESPN.

Truly a huge loss for wrestling but I'm glad I got to see him live in the 80's. He was magic on the mic and in the ring and will be sorely missed.

Since this is a message board, I know there must be some DC area folks on here..

Black Cat (14th between S and T NW) will be screening a Dusty doc at 5:15 today. Free! and a chance to share memories and stories about one of America's most iconic figures.

What a sad day it is.. To start new ones without him..

Rest in peace Dust

As part of his Dusty retrospective, Scott Keith reposted an old recap of a shoot interview from like 1999 in which he said the following:

"He talks a bit about Japan and how he wasn’t a big fan of Giant Baba (now there’s an understatement), and so he got caught up in the NJ-AJ wars when he worked a New Japan show and defended the NWA title there. Backstory: All Japan was an NWA member at the time, but Baba HATED Dusty, and in fact his booking of himself to the World title in 1986 caused a major PR problem between Crockett and Baba."

What's the story here? Did Baba and Dusty have some kind of falling out? Did Baba think Dusty exposed the business? Or is this just some third-hand RSPW rumor that Scott passed along as undisputed fact as was his wont in those days?

I remember someone on Wrestling Classics posted a clip of a heel Baba coming into Florida to collect a bounty on Rhodes' head, and Hisa Tanabe remarked that he was surprised Baba would do that, based on some sort of heat between the two. I'm not sure why Baba would care about Dusty winning the title in '86, though.

To this day, my grandfather will still recall a tremendous little tale of having me with him to meet Dusty Rhodes & the JYD outside of a gas station in Shreveport. It's one of my very first pro wrestling memories, and I can't emphasize how much it's meant to my relationship with my grandpa over the years...

The fact that we still get together every year to catch WrestleMania (and usually some of the lead-in shows or fallout shows)...

The fact that my grandfather can BARELY figure out how to send photos or texts with his phone, but he sent me a text message in the middle of the night to ask if I'd heard about Dusty's passing...

Just a really crushing piece of news this week. And everyone's right. It's so staggering that it's so hard to even comprehend right away or even properly put into context just yet.

Clearly there are bigger stories to break & all that, but it's rare that something happens so sudden to make you really step back & think about how the actions of someone you never really "knew" helped to shape your own personal life, relationships, etc.

Could also just be Dusty making shit up for a shoot interview.

I'm sure there was some exaggeration since A: It was Dusty and B: literally everyone makes shit up to some degree in shoot interviews, but I do recall Baba not being happy and Dusty booking himself those quickie NWA title reigns. The two theories I heard the most was either it was a case of Baba not getting why Dusty was popular and thinking it was just some random fat guy making himself champion or that he felt that it was devaluing the world title to have it traded like that (since that still mattered in 1986).

Such sad news.

My first piece of wrestling merchandise was a Dusty Rhodes WWF homework folder in 1990. My mom wanted to get me something for back-to-school that was wrestling related since I was a total wrestling nut back then. The only thing she could find at K-Mart at that time was the Dusty folder. I loved that thing.

Reading those tributes from Sami Zayn and Summer Rae is heartbreaking. I cannot imagine the impact the "Dream" had on so many over so many decades.

RIP, Dusty.

So I watched Starrcade 85 last night after the Dusty special on the Network, and man is that the most Dusty Rhodes show ever. Blood in almost every match, tons of cage matches, and a (delayed) Dusty Finish in the main event.

And it was great.

The Dusty-Flair match from Starrcade 85 may be my favorite match between the two. The way Dusty sells the leg attacks early on really make you want this to be the night he finally beats Flair. Even knowing how everything turned out on TV that weekend it still feels good when he does.

And one of my favorite fans ever which shows you how passionate people were for Dusty: the guy who was sitting near some sort of mic who spent the entire match screaming "Wooooooooo! WOO, WOO, WOOOOOOOOOOO! DUSTY RHODES! " and hooting and hollering every time Dusty landed a punch. it was like Sam Kinison became a wrestling fan for a night.

Where is Cody's eulogy or any others available online?

No offense intended if that happens to be your website, but holy shit, the color scheme is right out of an 1984 video game and the sketchy link at the end - "100% DIRECT LINK (PHOTOS): Layla In Hot CAMO Outfit! (24 SMOKIN’ HOT *MUST-SEE* Pics)!" - is like something from a 1996 "newz" site. Good God!

Lol. No that isn't my site. I only go on there due to it being mobile friendly. They basically just post what Dave or Keller say anyway.
