Loss
It felt like he had the WWE bumping style down already, so he has that going for him. And that back body drop bump suggests that as far as his working style goes, his calling card is probably as a heel after the new wears off. NintendoLogic
I think it's more interesting that they shot him straight to the main roster. I was under the impression that WWE had an ironclad policy of having everyone do a spell in developmental after the Sin Cara debacle. Matt D
What matters is how they present him. If they hide him in a multi man ladder match with R-Truth in the midcard at Mania, that's way more of an issue than his height or anything else. That looked nasty, to the point where I thought the big clumsy oaf had legitimately injured Styles. Kudos to such a great bump and that no one got hurt. Definitely the highlight of the night for AJ. Working heel is part of his renaissance the past few years as the indy ace/NJPW star gaijin. I think he probably doesn't want to ever revert to his TNA babyface style again. jcmmnx
I'm interested to see how over he gets with the casuals. I think his style will baby face him pretty quick to the younger fans. Regarding him being too small to Styles Clash big dude's I don't think it's an issue. AJ has a million other moves like the backflip ddt, spiral tap, springboard 450, calf killer etc that could end matches. My personal favorite of his is the spring board fore arm that is a thing of beauty.
Matt D
I do think the second Vince heard him speak, he probably went looking for Jeff Jarrett's novelty Double J hat to see if they could turn the first letter into an A.
Badlittlekitten
Odd thread, didn't notice it at all.
Cap
I noticed that he looked small, but it only really stood out when there was a cluster of guys. I didn't think it stood out when it was just one other person because it really more accented how big someone else was. Â Even though I "noticed" it doesn't "matter". Styles was bumping and selling like a star. His athleticism stood out much more than his size. I think if anything it will actually help him because they can really sell how gifted he is and focus on his pound for pound strength and athleticism without really highlighting his size that much. Â I never underestimate WWE's talent for losing talented people in their shuffle of mundane and narrow storytelling, but I came away thinking Styles is going to be just fine and has a real chance to be superstar for them. victory
I know it didn't play that way on t.v., but live he got the loudest pop I've ever heard in 30 years of going to live shows. No one cared that he was small. I thought it came across pretty well on tv or at least a lot better than I expected. Â As for him being small I thought he looked fine. ragemaster
The problem is Vince, in his mind he has his idea of what a star looks like. The booking of Daniel Bryan is all you need to know of Styles future. Â I'm sure he be giving a title run. Â But will Vince book him like the top star, very doubtful, they don't even book Reigns like a top star.(because they don't know how) In there minds the Rumble booking was suppose to elevate Reigns, But just made him look like a loser. Â The best you can hope for Styles is matches with the mid card guys and one every now and again moved to the main event before they move him back down. Â What in the last 15 years gives anyone hope that Vince will change his mind and book what the fans want. Daniel was the most over of anyone in years, all they did was try to bury him. Â Made me laugh on JBL legends show with Brian James, that JBL clamed the fans all thought we were burying Bryan. But we were giving him the biggest push ever to get him over. Â Not sure what else to was going to say, but it just shows how disillusioned the people in the company are, if they really think that. jushin muta liger
I've seen this thing about AJ going back to his TNA days when they used the NWA World Championship. Hell, the first time I saw him on those weekly PPVs all I kept thinking about was "Who is this little guy with the NWA World Title?" But it all goes away after you watch him and the casuals will get over it as soon as they see him on Raw. The guy carries himself as a star. Â People forget about Daniel Bryan when he debuted that he looked small but once he gained weight and grew the hair, he was fine. AJ having long hair helps him cause if he had the same look as he did in 2005, then he's small.
Coffey
AJ Styles is like one Springboard 450 away from the people in WWE audience not familiar with him to collectively lose their shit.
Slasher
Thing is Im not sure he should be doing that stuff either. You don't want to set the fans up to expect a 38 years old guy to move around like a 28 year old guy week in and week out on television. Matt D
I will say that a buddy of mine who is way more casual than us just send me a text of "I didn't realize he's smaller than Jericho." completely without any context to this thread or anything. joeg
Like, Rey Mysterio level tiny. Look, I know, it shouldn't matter. He just had a great match on the ROH PPV. He's a great worker and he's in ridiculously good shape. But... even next to Jericho. It's amazingly noticeable. Possibly limiting even in 2016 WWE. Â Â Jericho is also a good 20 pounds heavier than he was when he debuted in WWF.
Laz
Jericho is also known to wear lifts.
Benbeeach
I didn't think AJ was small, until I saw the Jericho match. Jericho is definitely at his restauranteur Jake Lamotta weight now but still, there was a noticeable difference. Like others have said though, AJ is one springboard 450 away from being Daniel Brian regardless so it shouldn't matter. The booking however... Eegah
AJ has never been large so I don't get the whole hub bub about it. He wrestled as a junior forever but over time his ability to get over moved him into an "Ace" role in TNA then along the Indies. I see people are shitting over the fact he wrestles Axel on the SmackDown takings, I'll be cautiously optimistic and say that he isn't going to go out and beat all the top guys but hopefully he works his way up on a win streak. He's become a good enough worker that I think he will do well, add in them obviously poneying up the money for him and people need to pump the brakes on the burial train.
