Teacher) who works with students with multiple disabilities/ASD/cognitive disabilities and we use a curriculum called Unique/News-2-You. This week's News-2-You Newspaper is all about WrestleMania! Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else out there works with this population of students and may not have access. PM me and I can send the PDFs, which are leveled from just pictures to Advanced (still pretty basic, maybe 1st grade level reading). John Cena is mentioned in the newspaper, which I found funny because I don't think he'll be there but is obviously the most recognizable wrestler to anyone born after 2003 - which would be the audience for newspapers written for students ages 5-20. What was more interesting to me was how prominently Bianca Belair was featured. That put a smile on my face. I don't think the WWE necessarily has any input in these things aside from maybe licensing photos. The word "wrestling" is said throughout. Championships are referred as "belts" that you win. The newspaper explains that wrestlers are people playing characters. It also says the wrestling ring is like a stage for the wrestlers to tell stories. Basically, it explains everything that us nerds spend our lives debating - is it a sport? is it an art? - in a succinct article that individuals with cognitive impairments can understand. One of the comprension questions at the end asked students if the sentence "John Cena is the best WWE wrestler" is a fact or opinion and that also made me laugh because I feel like that talking point could be a thread here. Well, those NOAH big shows seem so fresh compared to the current (for the last two years I'd say) NJPW stuff. The fact you don't get any stupid stuf like the americanized bullshit of the Bullet Club nor mediocre gaijins nor stupid gimmick is soooo refreshing indeed. And when you look at some of the veterans there like Marufuji, Shiozaki, Nakajima (yes, a young veteran considering how young he started), there's some severely overlooked main event level talent that still deliver some great stuff (Marufuji ruled when he did the G1 a few years ago). And I admit, I'm loving the Mutoh stuff (no, the match wasn't as good as the Shiozaki one, but pulling out a top rope frankensteiner at 58 is Terry Funk like shit and it's awesome). There doesn't even seem to be a Japanese book that is just dedicated to Showa-period AJPW history, which is our biggest hole. There are books that seem to be about Showa puroresu in general, and the IWE got an entire 600-page bio a few years back, but nothing specifically for ol' Zen Nihon. I think it's generally accepted that WWE has so many talented workers and produces so much content that some greatness is bound to break through. Being sentenced to watch every hour of WWE programming every week would be a fate worse than death, but it's quite tolerable if you cherry-pick. Yeah, from an outsider's perspective it seemed like Baba ran a smooth ship and kept whatever turmoil that did happen under lock and key. That's good for the company, but I would imagine it's a boring subject for anyone looking to write a book or do a podcast about. I would imagine there's a lot of "X wanted to do something wacky and/or get more power in the company but Baba got word and squashed it" that went on. Specifically, I would love to get AJ tv listings, at least up through the 1970s. We already have access to house show attendances. It would be cool to get actual Tv ratings for all the feds, sunce that is also something of a "black hole" in my Showa Puroresu research. Loss Posted March 31, 2021 Report Share Posted March 31, 2021 It seems like the main thing we know about AJPW is that the Babas did NOT handle it well when people left, whether that was Choshu, Tenryu, Misawa and company, or even Terry Funk. I am guessing Onita left on bad terms too, considering the things Ms. Baba said about him in 2000 when there were rumors of him returning post-Misawa, but I don't know that story. I don't want to just assume that the network just let Baba have the book again, and I have heard that Kabuki had done some booking before filling that position in SWS (still planning to write a big post about that in my thread btw, I'm just trying to get the prelude with Megane Super sponsoring and Tanaka apparently offering to buy Newborn UWF sorted out), but I haven't seen confirmation that he succeeded Sato. I scanned a whole issue of Monthly Pro Wrestling (March '78) that I ordered for Christmas, but unfortunately transcribing such low-grade paper will prove much more difficult due to the noise of the images (Kanjitomo is quite sensitive to such - a single hair gets on the page and the character becomes nigh-impossible to read). But hey, at least I got some photos of the 1/78 Baba/Race NWA title match that we don't have on tape out of it. (I've compressed them a bit.) I know a lot of people buy the "Ed Lewis was so good we had to start doing worked finishes" but that strikes me as bullshit.
