"_______ should have been a top guy"
flyonthewall2983 replied to JaymeFuture's topic in Pro Wrestling
Class. Never thought of this before. You'd have to tread carefully not to make 1992 Undertaker look like an idiot though. My dream scenario is that this would have been more in the late 90's, though it would have worked around the time the character debuted too. A more fiendish less cartoon-y Doink versus the ultra-gothy Taker could have worked well. -

That's the only scenario that sounds interesting. Other than that, I really hope New Orleans was it. The match was sub-par, but the shock from the 1-2-3 was pretty astounding and kind of a wonderful moment in and of itself. -

KC just shot a new Timeline with Bret, covering WWF 1992. -
The extenuating circumstances are paramount in this case, though. He was top dog in WCW, at a time when wrestling had a huge black-eye and when it was considered by people not in the wrestling bubble to be bush-league and way too regional. That stigma would really not go away until the NWO, by which time he was in the WWF. He did a lot better up north than people give him credit for. The ground was shifting and they were about to happen upon two of the biggest stars that the company has ever produced. But he still managed to stay somewhat in the upper card until the fall '97, with his gimmick intact. Maybe it was because I was more of a WCW guy at the time, but I knew WWF bringing him in felt like a mis-match but he made the most of it. That run could have failed a lot worse than it did.

I'd imagine that Patterson scene was chopped up to exclude any gay references. I think that's what that was all about, but I can only imagine how over that part went over the fans who necessarily don't know.

Tonight's episode was okay. The stuff with Jimmy and Tony at the end was quite powerful stuff, and next week looks no different. The "series finale" so it looks like this experiment was just that.

Scott was best as a tag team guy with his brother, and even Bagwell a little because they had good chemistry. On his own he fumbled. -

A heel Doink/Undertaker program would have been money. It's Batman and The Joker. The evil antics versus the other-worldly character would have been a perfect fit. -

This must have been before they had hired The Powers of Pain, who had a somewhat similar gimmick. -

I heard somewhere that before his death Brody was talking about Vince wanting him to come up and work an angle with Hogan, and that would be his gimmick. It would also be his "one last job" because he'd take the big checks and finally retire. -

Hogan had a TV match with Typhoon late in '91 as well. The announcers never mentioned Tugboat and the prior angle. Wasn't the Berzerker gimmick originally intended for Brody and Nord as a tag team? -

Does anybody give a shit about Randy Orton?
flyonthewall2983 replied to Cross Face Chicken Wing's topic in The Microscope
The program he did with Mick Foley is probably the best single angle WWE has done since the WCW buyout. It was at least the one that had me the most attuned and cheered Mick and fucking loathed Randy. Ever since the product has been what it is, and with it's share of great matches but no program has landed like that one did with me. His in-ring work is pretty good, but his character sucks, his music sucks and he's not that great on the stick. -
Was just about to post that lol. I didn't see the match, but one thing I am very curious about is if Ric and Bret buried their animosities any. I hope so, Ric needs as much emotional support from his peers at this point in his life.

Goldust was a great promo, and when he broke away from that character he was better on the mic. Sting didn't need to be that intelligent an interview, his enthusiasm and intensity would get over more than his verbiage. -
More likely Brooklyn, Manhattan, etc, etc.

Their marijuana policy is idiotic, but I understand it to a degree. The price of being a publicly traded company. -

Starting him at the Royal Rumble was nice but not very overwhelming. I heard here that he said he wished he could have told Vince that he would have been ready for WrestleMania, because of his health issues. That would have been the best platform for him to debut in, possibly in the same way he started in Japan how he annihilated Inoki. To their credit, his performance in that 4-way match a year later brought him some goodwill and I believe they were going to put the IC belt on him, possibly leading to even bigger things for him. Then Kuwait happened. -
For those watching in the arena and live on PPV, and because he still had a following and recognition for being the top hero, the high of seeing him come out (because he'd not been on TV or rarely mentioned by the announcers much for over 2 months by this point) would overwhelm anything anybody was saying. Which is what made the legdrop to Savage all the more powerful an image.

Between the two I'd have to say 54. He looked quite young when he won the tag team belts with Rocky. -
I figured he'd do it first but not really surprised that one of them did it anyway. Timing of it is a bit strange, but I don't see it as the momentum killer some others here are saying it is. We'll just have to see how it plays out.

In WCW, yes. I think he could have perservered through the Hogan era though. Not that he ever would have used it (more often it could have been used against his own momentum getting over), but his father was still a big part of the company and that kind of nepotism could have been a good balance against Hogan's influence. I could see him on the side of WCW like Savage, Luger and eventually Sting would be during the height of the NWO angle. In WWF I think he would have gotten the Goldust character regardless. To his credit he did make it work although it made the product awfully awkward, as his segments were counter-intuitive to the family-friendly approach they had in 95 and 96. But I'm just glad to see him part of the show now, especially performing like it's still the 90's. Thanks DDP. I was just thinking about it, but if WWE was a bit more forward thinking they could recycle some of those controversial angles, with less direct sexual overtones but made to just screw with guys' heads. But with Dust as a face this time. -

Curt Hennig. Had he never injured his back, he could have had the kind of career Bret or Shawn ultimately did have with Vince. If it all would have worked out before egos became involved between Bret and Shawn, Curt would have been the perfect common enemy that they could have exchanged lengthy title runs with. I don't know how well he would have fit in with the Attitude era character-wise but I could see him switching to the more intense working style that point in time produced.
