Jim Breaks with 36 :D

I get a kick out of a majority of the Saint talk always boiling down to "well, there's these other guys that deserve a spot too" which is true but in my mind wrestler X also being a good candidate doesn't = Saint not being a good one.

I disagree, especially in a case like Europe where we are trying to establish a benchmark candidate. To me you are much better off going for the obvious candidate (if there is one) or at least the most deserving first.

From this week's Observer...

Sam Muchnick in St. Louis did the same thing, he’d often would put the main event on next to last and end the show with a 2/3 fall tag team match with four top veteran workers, in his case it was if there was going to be big heat in the main event finish, this calmed the people down before they left the arena

Does this help Blackwell's case at all, Dylan?

Hard to say.

What the St. Louis stuff shows with Blackwell is that he was a star of some magnitude somewhere other than the AWA. He was a consistent main or semi-main guy there. The lack of consistent attendance figures make it hard to say what sort of power he had at the box office there. I suspect he was more a piece than anything, but his Missouri Title wins seem to imply that he was viewed as a valuable piece.

It's clear that St. Louis is more of a positive for him then I would have guessed coming in, but it's secondary to his drawing/star power in the AWA and even his in ring work in terms of determining where he falls on a HoF spectrum.

Someone seems to have the numbers since numbers get tossed out in Dave's STL pieces (and other pieces on wrestlers who worked a fair amount in STL) regularly enough.

Another random aside on Blackwell but I think he would have made a great heel challenger for Hogan in the WWF. He was loyal to Verne for the push Verne gave him, but he had worked programs in St. Louis and the AWA with Hogan and was sort of a perfect challenger in the mold of "fat immovable object" types. He was also a better worker than Bundy, Andre, Kamala or Bossman. Even as late as 88 they probably could have had some very good matches and my guess is they would have done great business. It's funny in a way because I get the feeling if he had one six month WWF run where he drew well opposite Hogan folks would be far less dismissive of the notion that he is an HoF candidate worth discussing.

Dave on the LAW radio show said yesterday that this week is HOF issue week and he is writing MULTIPLE bios.

Update from Dave:

Just a note that the Hall of Fame issue of the Observer will be out on Wednesday. It will be the biggest issue of the year with several major bios. To get the speculation going, there were three people voted into the Hall of Fame this year.

I'm guessing one of the inductees may be a surprise by Dave's wording. Maybe Carlos Colon due to the new geographic region or a historical candidate going in by fiat?

Did Wagner Sr. fall below 5%?

I'd have to go back and check the comments I had from him last year, but I don't think Dr. Lucha was sold on Wagner Sr at all.

From last years results:

Dr. Wagner Sr. 41 55% 47%

Less than 10% of the votes from the region and dropped from next year’s balloting: Cowboy Bob Ellis, Yukon Eric, Bearcat Wright, Cibernetico, Dr. Wagner Jr., Giant Haystacks

From the prior year results:

Dr. Wagner Sr. 35 47% 48%

Dr. Wagner Jr. 15 20% -----

It's pretty clear that Sr. is the one who should be on the ballot and Jr. shouldn't be on it for another couple of years.
