It is kind of jarring to see how hard they were pushing the angle with Vince blowing up in his limo and the subsequent investigation prior to everything happening. Obviously, they had to do it, but it sucks to watch the build up knowing what is going to happen.

Not to be too morbid/insensitive but considering that the Limo Angle just morphed into the Paternity Angle and that the Paternity Angle ended up being a total joke with a lame punchline (it was...Hornswoggle! So funny I forgot I laugh!), I kinda wish that entire storyline would've been in the house when Benoit did his thing.

And, while I know the original concept had some people intrigued (probably myself included back in 2007), when you consider the way Mr. Kennedy turned out in TNA and you really look at his track record of even just "good" matches, I don't think even the original concept, executed perfectly, would've bore fruit.

Yea I'm really not sure how the whole Kennedy hype train even got started as I never thought the guy was all that good. If the angle had played out as planned as he'd have been the illegitimate McMahon I'm pretty sure that would have lead to a huge push for him and I'm quite glad that never happened.

He wasn't good but this was during a weird time where everyone they bringing up through developmental was so identical, if you did anything different to stand out you were considered good. See also: Carlito.

They have the entire year up now. I really loved that anniversary show they did in December that had the random appearances from Bastion Booger and Sunny. Much better than the terrible 2003 anniversary show.

Funny you say that about Carlito because I almost mentioned him in that post as a guy in that same boat. But even though I never thought Carlito was all that good in the ring I thought he was a more interesting character than "all I do is say my name twice" Mr. Kennedy. At least around the time that he debuted and they were doing the whole "did Carlito stab John Cena?" deal.

I think people got on the hype train because Kennedy had the Vince seal of approval that basically guaranteed a big push. As I recall, Vince personally chose to give his middle name for use as Anderson's new surname, then he started getting PPV matches with the Undertaker pretty early into his run.

Well times have certainly changed then if that's the case because now having the Vince seal of approval just means everyone hates you even if you're putting on the best matches in the company.

Like political/social issues debates, how much do you want to put the blame for that on the rise of the more "quick hot take" nature of social/network media platforms that rose in the ensuing years?

Twitter, Tumblr-esque gifs and memes, podcasts, YouTube channels, etc.

Though to be fair, Kennedy/Anderson was presented as a guy who wasn't given the keys to the kingdom the way Reigns has, or seemingly fell into the business because of failures at other things (Cena/body building, Reigns/football).

This has always been the absolute dumbest criticism of Reigns to me because there is an incredibly long list of wrestlers who didn't make big names in professional football but became huge stars in wrestling. I guess we should all hate The Rock, Butch Reed, Jim Duggan, Ron Simmons, etc etc etc now though since they didn't have lengthy All Pro careers in the NFL before getting into wrestling.

Not sure which is worse, that Reigns only became a pro-wrestler because he failed at football, or the hate because he replaced Chris Hero in CM Punk's original concept of The Shield (I try not to look into crazy anti-Reigns corners but I have to assume replacing an IWC darling in a concept created by an IWC darling who is noted for creative clashes and being proven "right" more often than not is high up on their list of reasons to despise him).

I always remember this for Bret Hart doing a pre tape, marking the first time he was filmed specifically for Raw since 97. It took a further three years for him to feel comfortable enough to enter a ring, live. Apparently Vince's brother was meant to get involved with this storyline also until the Benoit incident. My memory is suggesting he was even at that "tribute" Raw.
