If You Could Take Only 3 Matches To A Desert Island...

So for this week's podcast, we're taking a page from an old radio show called "Desert Island Discs" and applying it to wrestling matches to try and break down some of the classics with a different perspective. So the question is, if you were being shipped off to a desert island tomorrow, and were only allowed to take 3 wrestling matches with you to watch forever, which 3 would you choose, and more importantly, why?

Do you choose the best three matches you can think of, do you try and get a mixed flavour for what you like, or do you go for matches based on personal experiences and nostalgic memories?

As always, the best contributions will be read on the show and you'll be credited accordingly, so what would make your list of three, and what is the rationale behind your choices?

EDIT - Part 1 of this series, featuring a great many of your contributions is now online and available to listen to at the following link: http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean.com/mf/play/5u7tdk/SCGRadio73-DesertIslandDuelsPart1.mp3

EDIT - Part 2 of this series, featuring a great many of your contributions is now online and available to listen to at the following link: http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean.com/mf/play/qyreex/SCGRadio74-DesertIslandDuelsPart2.mp3

I'd take:

1 - Bret Hart vs Roddy Piper from WM8, as it's been my favourite match for years now. It encapsulates everything I love about wrestling in one sub-15 minute match, love the morality play and story-telling in it, and I think the ending is just perfect.

2 - The 10 tag team match from Survivor Series 88. I think you'd need one really long match to pass the time, and something like this with 20 wrestlers in will have so much going on that it'll still be great on repeated viewing. Plus I've always loved this match, it's just so much fun, wrestling as comfort food.

3 - Odd choice, but I'm going with the Henchmen vs Chris Brookes & Tyler Bate from Triple X Wrestling in 2014. I think I'd want something to remind me of home, so this match from my home city would do the trick. Plus, it's one of my favourite matches I've seen live, making it a sentimental pick, and it's a match I've watched numerous times and still enjoy.

Only three? You sir are an asshole.

Cena vs Umaga - Rumble 2007

My favourite match of all time. It's perfect in every way. It's Cena's best match, it's a war with bombs and weapons, it has a great story that unfolds, it's good vs evil, it has everything.

Team Austin vs Team Bischoff - Survivor Series 2003

My other favourite match of all time. It is the match that got me hooked on wrestling. I've watched it a hundred times and I never get tired of it, even though I could probably recite the commentary by now. The angle going in, the match as it unfolds early, and then Shawn Michaels' performance and the heart breaking finish. I love it all.

Trish Stratus vs Mickie James - WM22

The first two were no brainers. This I had to think about because I was torn between about four different Trish matches. It was either this or Trish vs Lita from the Raw main event in 2004. But that one is more for being the culmination of a long feud, while this one is probably a little more interesting on it's own merits, if you include crazy Mickie, JR's manic commentary and the rebellious crowd (before that kind of thing was commonplace).

Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect - Summerslam 1991 - Probably the match I've seen the most since both are in my top 5 favorites. They work so well together and Heenan/Piper/Monsoon are perfect on commentary. Perfect never looked better in WWF and it's such an important match for Hart's growth as a performer/star.

Edge/Mysterio vs. Angle/Benoit - No Mercy 2002 - Was going to go with Angle/Mysterio from Summerslam 2002, but instead went with a much longer tag match. Perfect timing and possibly the peak of the Smackdown Six run.

Owen Hart vs. Davey Boy Smith - Raw 1997 - More perfect chemistry. Bulldog is able to pull out of his older, more agile movements and Owen is right there to counter.

The Hart Foundation Vs Steve Austin, Goldust, Ken Shamrock and the Legion of Doom: I mentioned in the Hart/Austin feud thread that this was my favourite time to be a wrestling fan, and this was really the absolute zenith of that period/feud/storyline for me. Everything about this was pretty much perfect, from the incredible crowd (I love them losing their shit for Pillman's dirty cheating), the story that plays out, the post-match celebration, and the fact that the good guys won, of course. At this time I had a friend of mine who taped wrestling for me, and I vividly remember sneakily staying up past my bedtime on a school night to finish watching this match, and just being so happy that my guys won. I couldn't not have this match available to watch.

Ultimo Dragon Vs Shinjiro Ohtani: I think this was the first Ohtani match I ever saw, and I was immediately a huge fan. So easy to get caught up in his personality, not to mention his incredible execution. I consider this to be pretty much a perfect match, the highpoint of the NJ juniors style, another great crowd, and you just can't beat the first time you saw one of your favourites, which Ohtani definitely is.

Is it a cheat to take one of the big gauntlet matches from the NJ set? Because those give you both quality and quantity, and are like a bunch of matches in one. I could pick Bret/Austin WM13 as that's also one of my favourite matches. But then I already have the 10-man, and it would probably be wise to represent some different styles and eras if possible. Jumbo Vs Bockwinkel with Terry Funk as ref is another one of my absolute favourites. A real wrestling clinic with the added bonus of Funk's shenanigans. I'm probably forgetting a bunch of other stuff, but in the end I'm going to show some recency bias and go with

Blue Panther Vs Villano V mask vs mask: I only watched this while swotting for the GWE project, and have only seen it once, but I just had so much fun with this, and it's rare that I watch a new match now and just mark out so unabashedly (actually that's not true- I mark out for stuff I've never seen before all the time, but rarely to this level). This just blew me away from Perrito's second work, to Panther's barrage of dives, to the surprising (to me at least) finish. And it doesn't hurt to have some lucha with me, does it?

Flair vs. Steamboat, Clash 6. Love the match and have watched it many times without ever losing interest. This would be my first choice because 1) the match is awesome, 2) it brings back great memories of my early tape-trading days, 3) the match lasts an hour, so that's an hour of time where I won't be bored on the island and 4) it's Flair and Steamboat. If you're a wrestling fan on a desert island, you gotta have at least one Flair/Steamboat match to watch.

1992 Royal Rumble. In addition to being a great match filled with hall of famers and wrestlers from my youth, you also get an epic Bobby Heenan on the mic and a classic Flair promo after the match. This one also kills an hour. So far, I've taken up two hours of every day with wrestling.

Terry Funk vs. Stan Hansen (4/14/83). A wild match between two guys who can temporarily help you forget that you're stuck on a desert island.

For the record, my plan when I got to the island would be this:

1. Find a safe spot to store the disc that contains these matches so it doesn't get stolen by an exotic animal or eaten by a cannibalistic tribe led by Kamala.

2. Write a letter letting people know where I am and to come rescue me in one week. I need a week because it might be nice vacation to watch these matches and hang out on the island for a week.

3. Put letter in bottle, toss in ocean.

4. Search the island for hallucinogens and supplies to brew my own beer.

5. Consume the hallucinogens, pound 18 beers and watch my wrestling.

6. Pass out for the day, repeat process the next day.

1992 Royal Rumble - match that won me over live to the greatness of Ric Flair, I'd get a look at so many of the wrestlers I grew up with and the greatest commentary of all time.

WM VII - Warrior vs. Macho King - The greatest feel good moment in wrestling history

War Games 1992 - Favorite WCW match of the decade for me, and again I get a look at many different guys I love.

Team ROH vs. Team CZW (ROH Death Before Dishonor IV)

The cap off to my favorite feud of the past decade. Everything in this match was executed perfectly, from Hero trolling the ROH crowd to Bryan turning on Joe (since he cared only for his World title) and Homicide making the save, as it concluded the inter promotional feud and paid respect to every talent's history while setting them up for the future. This is the largest feather in Gabe's cap as a booker and he's yet to reach this level since.

Cruiserweight Battle Royal and subsequent Cruiserweight title match (WCW Slamboree 1998)

Bit of a cheat here, but it was one glorious segment and I count it as one whole thing. Jericho introducing the contenders for a match brought on via Malenko's suspension (for violating a "no touch" clause, instigated by Jericho himself), and his ridiculous burying of them, instantly made the match entertaining. As far as battle royals go, it's nothing special. Then the end happens. Juvi, just a few short months after losing his mask to Jericho, shakes the hand of El Ciclope and eliminates himself, granting Ciclope the immediate title shot. Jericho, confused, watches on Ciclope begins to willingly unmask...and it's DEAN MALENKO!! The next few minutes are a complete squash as Dean lays into Jericho harder than he's ever laid into anyone, and my favorite moment in wrestling history ends with Malenko holding the Cruiserweight title.

Roderick Strong vs. TJ Perkins (PWG Threemendous III)

This isn't a classic match. Hell, there's plenty of problems with it, I wouldn't rate it above ***1/2 on a generous day filled with intoxicants, and it's one of two matches on this show that doesn't seem to get much love anywhere. Watching it, though, was when I started falling in love with Strong's work and, in my opinion, when he started to really click it all together. He punishes TJ for the majority of it, seemingly taking out every bit of aggression over not being near the ME after being a PWG staple for years, and has found the perfect target in TJ since Perkins, too, has been a PWG staple for years. TJ doesn't go down without a fight, though, but this is the Strong show and finishes with an incredibly impressive combo by Roderick that both gets people going nuts (the End of Heartache finish debuts here, if I'm not mistaken) and also sets Roddy on the path to the PWG World title.

My mood for wrestling changes all the time but for the moment my 3:

1. Triple H vs Daniel Bryan, Wrestlemania 30. This is the rightful blowoff to the long storyline of Bryan vs Authority and it's one of the very few Triple H matches that I actually enjoy, because it's not a typical Triple H match.

2. AJ Styles vs Chriztopher Daniels vs Samoa Joe, Unbreakable. One of the two best triple threat matches I've ever seen (the other being Ttiple H vs Shawn Michaels vs Chris Benoit, but for obvious reasons I can't take that match) and probably my favorite TNA match ever.

3. Bret Hart vs Steve Austin, Wrestlemania 13. I don't need to explain this one.

Mitsuharu Misawas Vs. Kenta Kosbashi

NOAH Navigate For Evolution 2003 (3/1/03)

The last great battle between these two legends. This match was everything they did in All Japan ramped up to one million. I show this match to all of my friends who never seen any puro.

Dean Malenko Vs Ultimo Dragon

WCW Starrcade 1996 (12/29/96)

My favorite cruiserweight match and one of the best openers ever.

AJ Styles Vs. Minoru Suzuki

NJPW G1 Climax 24 Day 7 (8/1/14)

This match is just perfect. Suzuki was just unworldly here. His arm work and facials made the whole thing work. His heel work was so excellent he made Styles who was also a heel came out looking like a super face.

Shame on you for making us choose three, lol.

This is really hard to narrow it down to 3 matches. My mind changes all the time for my top 25 order. So I will just pick 3 from my list on how I'm feeling now.

AWA - 8/30/86 - Midnight Rockers vs Buddy Rose/Doug Somers. The first time I saw this match was when it aired almost 30 years ago. I was teenager then and even now it's still just as tremendous. The perfect tag match with great hope spots and awesome selling. The inclusion of blood just adds to the greatness, especially with the Rockers wearing white makes for an awesome visual. Post match stuff is fun as well.

WWF - Summerslam 8/29/92 - Randy Savage vs The Ultimate Warrior. I know a lot of people prefer the retirement match, but to me this one is better. I will admit the finish isn't as good. I do like the Flair and Perfect interference stuff. To me both guys work hard with a lot of back and forth action. I also love the pageantry during the intros with the stare down. A really fun match.

WCW - Beach Blast 6/20/92 - Sting vs Cactus Jack. This is the type of match where I really think Sting is in his element. He seems to do great in a brawling type of setting. This match has a bunch of fun spots without over doing it. It sets a great tempo right from the start with Cactus waiting for Sting on the ramp where they immediately go right at it. This really stresses the hatred these two have for each other. This is a match I just can't get enough of over the years.

1. Steiner Brothers vs. Nasty Boys from Halloween Havoc 90

2. Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat (2 out of 3 falls) from Clash VI

3. Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi from 11/06/99

The 6/99 Misawa-Kobashi is usually not atop most lists of their best matches what puts it over the top for you?

While I agree that it's not their best together, the 99 match was the first KK-MM clash I saw and holds a sweet spot for me.

OJ, regardless of the pad size, this scene is possible on my island:

While walking along the beach Elliott stumbles upon a beaten and bloodied stranger washed up on the shore. Not knowing the horrific ordeal this stranger has been through specifically, but understanding the fear of being lost at sea and washing up on a deserted island, Elliott rushes to the stranger to give assistance. When the beaten and bloodied stranger regains consciousness, Elliott attempts to communicate..."

Elliott: "Who are you? Do you know your name?"

Stranger: "My name? My name is Jerry von Kramer."

Elliott: "You're safe now Jerry. It will be ok. There's not much to do here but I have a bunch of pro wrestling matches we can watch."

JVK: "Do you have any Ted Dibiase matches?"

Elliott: "No."

JVK: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Jerry von Kramer dashes back out to sea.
