The greatest cons in wrestling history

Speaking of Dawn, I was just reading her Torch Talk from 2006.

Keller: Chris Benoit?

Dawn: An amazing man. Again, loyal. I could never imagine him doing anything wrong to his family. Loves his family. Great confidant. If you have any questions, any problems with anyone, you can go to him. But different from D-Von. He's more on a friendly level. You go to him and he helps you on a professional level deal with your indifferences and problems and frustrations. And it goes no further.

Eerie, no?

Bit funny considering this week's news in the McMahon piece.

Why would she even bring that up?

The nation of Japan and geek popular culture con Ring Of Honor: If you've been around die-hard wrestling, comic book, animation, video game, pornography, toy, or movie fans over the years, you've probably felt some of the allure of Japan. Via a weird fetishization of the ENTIRE COUNTRY, it's considered this magical land full of five star matches, subservient women who want our big American penises, the most innovative video games, violent art films, and robot dogs. It's a mindset that has reverberated through the geekier aspects of popular culture for the last 15 years or so, getting worse and worse over time. Somehow this concept of Japan conned professional con men. I'm not quite sure how, but it happened. Thus, ROH spent massive amounts of money to run what were basically normal ROH shows in Japan, just because they are huge marks for the concept of Japan. These shows featured nobody of any consequence that hasn't been to ROH before. Not enough Americans were in attendance to generate a buzz based off their live reports of the show. It cost a huge amount of money to put on. Plus, in falling victim to this con, they were unable to con their usual marks effectively. A fan or two flew to Japan specifically for these shows. If you have a fan dedicated enough to spend thousands of dollars on your company, shouldn't you try to con him on to giving the money TO YOUR COMPANY instead of an airline? How do you run a wrestling promotion and get conned so hideously while also failing to properly con your marks?

Can I just say I think this is hilarious, sad and true.

Maybe a stretch of the term, but how about Dixie Carter becoming the most pushed babyface in TNA after the Heyman rumors started up? She's been the target of a con for years now, and this is one of the most transparent tactics yet.

Take a drink every time someone thanks Dixie on a TNA progam

Should we just take it for granted that Dawn only collected $3,000 for Steve Williams, when she originally aimed to raise $20,000?

I don't know how easy it is to raise $20,000 in this economic climate but people are right to be suspicious. A couple of things bother me about this whole fiasco. Instead of prividing records, Dawn Marie lawyered up. Probably a smart decision but it still looks conspicuous. She could show Dave Meltzer some documents, he would clear it up and it would be over with. If Doc did get three grand, that is still a noble gesture but was he the only wrestler helped by this fund? Was Wrestler's Rescue synonymous with Dr. Death's Rescue? Why aren't other wrestlers coming forward to say they have been helped?

I raised $1100 to help people affected by cancer-related causes this year. Half of the money you can track simply by emailing GBBrutal. The other half, you just have to take my word. If you asked me to provide documents proving the money went where I said it did, I couldn't do it.

In talking about the various characters on the WCW B sides project I remembered the story of Hardbody Harrison and the scummiest wrestling school con of all time.

http://www.wsbtv.com/news/14663979/detail.html

Hardbody Harrison used the prospect of wrestling school to lure women into forced labor and prostitution.

He was convicted of charges including conspiracy, witness tampering, aggravated sexual abuse, forced labor, and sex trafficking involving eight women.

He defended himself in court maintaining the con claiming " he was just training the women to be professional wrestlers. He said many of them arrived on drugs and left in the best shape of their lives." as though forcing the women work as prostitues and to haul lumber and sod was some sort of Mr. Miyagi "wax on/wax off" style training regimen.

Truly the standard by which all wrestling school cons must be judged.

The case was handled by federal prosecutors because the suspects transported the women on interstate highways, provided them with condoms that were manufactured outside Georgia and used mobile phones.

The latter two sound like a bit of a stretch.

He was a Power Plant trainer at one point, wasn't he?

I like how they just let Eric Young go after offering him a paycut, only to bring back Nash and whatever he's making when he hasn't made one dollar for the company in all the years he's been there. Not that Eric Young has made them any money, but at least he fills a spot in the undercard and won't cost an exorbitant amount of money.
