A quick glance at Cagematch to confirm the match date (Japanese matches are sometimes reversed on day/month) reveals headhunter B is actually Puerto Rican. This makes a ton of sense for more than one reason. Reason 1. Both guys go directly for the gimmick. If you have ever watched a gimmick match in PR, they don't fuck around too long before they start making for the thing they can hurt somebody with. Reason 2. They remind me a lot of smaller Abby clones with the way they wrestle, the boots, just the way they carry themselves. Anyway, they stab each other with glass a lot and use the barbed wire boards. Not a huge "deathmatch for the sake of deathmatch" fan, especially here. I found myself wondering why two partners would take the chance of maiming or killing each other in a match like this. And how they would be partners after. Then it occurred to me that if they are Abby clones, then they just want to go out there and maim whatever poor schmuck is right in front of them. So it works. Headhunter A busting a few pieces of glass over B's head is all kinds of holy shit dangerous. Eyes, nose, that could do some permanent damage if a big enough shard went the wrong direction. The fat guy flying spots were good. I actually liked the botch before the finish because it got over how ridiculously out of it you would have to be after taking that kind of assault. If you like deathmatch gore stuff for the sake of it, this is a pretty good match. From what I have seen of the Headhunters they don't really do much in terms of structure or great psychology, so these kinds of matches would definitely be their bread and butter. And they hug and make up post-match while beating up some poor bastard who comes out to congratulate the winner. So yeah, Abby clones.

[2008-03-09-wXw-16 Carat Gold] Bryan Danielson vs Chris Hero
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in March 2008
So this crowd really, really sucked. Go away. Get the fuck off the ring apron too. Indy-riffic announcing doesn't do this match any favors. Danielson's heeling is top-notch. Really liked the matwork and how it always went back to matwork until the finish. The escalation was good throughout. I didn't like the lead-in to the finish because they did that "I hit you-you hit me" thing way too long for my tastes. If you like that kind of thing, it probably helps the match. Both guys worked really hard and put a lot into this match. Psychology of the match is really well done too. It's just got way too much awful crowd and announcing and the finish is a little irritating without that, icing on the never again cake with the other factors. -
Well, I'd say Satanico would match up well too. But I can absolutely see either matchup as a really fun one that never got seen for Martel. That card had to send the Ontario folks home happy.
-
I was a fan of the last two matches as well. Magnum is looking like a world-beater. Devils Duo and the Kiniskis are quietly keeping their feud going as well.
-
So you did a card in a bar with Brody, the Moondogs, Ronnie Garvin and Dr. D involved? That works for me. Big card to kick it off and I like the names you brought in. At some point you need to bring in all of the wild, over-the-top brawl guys and have just a massive bar fight where the last guy not bleeding and still conscious is the winner.

I really like the way the Nation is growing and people are coming together to oppose it. Waiting to see if the alliance of babyfaces can stay as united as the Nation. Main was great, as was the tag title defense. I also enjoy how Cornette is keeping the MX out of all of the bigger wars. Seems like a Corny thing to do.

I watched the Ogawa vs. Hash match I was given and came away with mixed feelings. I think if you give it 3-5 less minutes it could have been something at least good enough on the wrestling level that the spectacle of it is more what you remember. http://www.dailymoti...m/video/x5b0bzc Below is the review thread. http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/29413-shinya-hashimoto-vs-naoya-ogawa-njpw-final-dome-101199/&do=findComment&comment=5829341

[1999-10-11-NJPW-Final Dome] Shinya Hashimoto vs Naoya Ogawa
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1999
This was...something. There are a lot of parts I like, there are some issues I have with it as well. The good. Hash's early comebacks are really good. As is the dickery by Ogawa. I like how it is clear from the start Ogawa doesn't need it, so it only heightens the effect. Ogawa himself is actually an interesting thing. He's clearly out of place but not necessarily in a bad way. He's got this aura of badass to him, but is clearly not supposed to be in a wrestling ring. The first few STOs and throws were really good. The strategy by Ogawa is good. Picking yourself up off the ground over and over again is hard work. You get tired just doing that. If you're getting hit or thrown around it is worse. So when Hash won't back down Ogawa keeps putting him on his back and making him get up, because he knows Hash will. Then when the hands drop and no defense to speak of, lights out. The bad. I get this feeling watching Ogawa that he wasn't necessarily trained as a pro wrestler very long. Long enough so he could throw kicks to the back of the head and not kill a guy and that's about it. Not good looking kicks, but kicks nonetheless. Some of the "Ogawa doesn't belong here" comes in when different, more pro wrestling, situations come up and he just is unsure of what to do. The repetitive throws and selling really expose this. Did Inoki only train Ogawa so far on pro wrestling in order to make him feel completely different? It works, but it hurts the proceedings in ways as well. On the level of spectacle and getting over with the live audience, this was a home run. If you're looking at it as a match it's not very good as a whole. There are interesting and some good parts for sure. If you cut some time off of this it might be better remembered.- 12 replies

[1991-10-27-WCW-Halloween Havoc] WCW Phantom and Paul E. Dangerously

I liked Paul E.'s promo a lot. Rude's not so much as I thought he was too over the top for Rick Rude.I am looking forward to seeing how this plays out though!- 11 replies

[1991-10-27-WCW-Halloween Havoc] Steve Austin vs Dustin Rhodes
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1991
I was surprised by how good both were at building from matwork and telling a story. I did enjoy JR being sold on Austin already. Really good match that did show a lack of polish. But the combined experience of both guys should not lead to that good of a 15 minutes in the ring. If the crowd is a little dead, I can put some blame on the way they opened the show.- 10 replies

I thought the attack looked great. My immediate thought right afterwards was, "how many Barry Windham matches are they going to show in the next few weeks on TV?" So I guess that lets you know how much WCW has been impressing me in 1991.

I liked that everyone was trying to work hard and make this less of a dog than it could have been. Foley really wanted this to be a big deal, you could tell. That was all I liked. No fan reaction to Vader. At all. Was he even mentioned on TV in the lead-up? Ref-cam? One and done please. Putting that monstrosity in the center of the ring and handcuffing the wrestlers more than they already were? Great call on that one. Foley waiting on Steiner to put Abby in the chair was all kinds of stupid, but I guess we can chalk that one up to the crazy guy being nuts. All I'm going to say to finish off is that if i had bought a PPV for whatever Havoc cost and this was the first match I saw, I would never have ordered another WCW PPV again.

Did Eddie make more money for this than he did working in Memphis? I liked some of the close-up stuff, not sure Eddie should be running around that close to fans with so much of his blood on him though. Eddie takes a couple of bumps and that's most of the good stuff. The one fan yelling at Eddie to go get his car was amusing and disturbing.

[1991-10-26-WCW-Saturday Night] The Enforcers and Fabulous Freebirds
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1991
Here's my problem with this. You're presenting the Enforcers as these tough guy heels. And the Freebirds have been the most worthless tag team in the promotion as far as actually accomplishing anything in the ring without holy shit levels of stalling and cheating. But somehow they are equals? By that equation if the Steiners showed up the Enforcers would fold in less than 5 minutes.- 6 replies

Embry's promo was really good and I like when he gets intense towards the end. Pritchard blows him out of the water though and I love him addressing the Piper stuff because he really has been trying to make himself not sound like that since coming to Memphis. Pritchard's promo is surprising in that it really has this "shoot" sensibility to it though i doubt it was 100% accurate. I wouldn't say Pritchard was in any way trying to sound like a milk drinker. He makes sure to say that he likes going ou, getting hammered and finding a lady. But the next day he's back to business, unlike Embry.

[1991-10-26-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and Billy Joe Travis
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1991
Lawler again looks like a bully. Did he need the fire against Travis? Did he need to rub it in? What threat does Travis have that demands this kind of thing from Lawler? -
Both of the last two tags are matches I would go back in time and pay to see.

Tenryu and Jumbo are for sure not finished. That end to their match guarantees it. Kensuke and Choshu in the same corner would be confusing.

I've been talking with Boricua about organizing PR. We're making progress as to how we want to approach the subject. I count 3 who would be up for looking at 1988-1992 with specific wrestlers in mind, myself included. I am somewhat familiar with the era, but I think the setup on that project will require a lot of digging into match results, promos, etc. to get the right setup for it (which I think is key). Would have to be a collaborative effort to really dig into whatever resources are available and find the footage to go through. If Migs and Astro are up for it we can start a PM thread where we get things organized.

[1991-10-24-AJPW-October Giant Series] Jumbo Tsuruta vs Toshiaki Kawada
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1991
I like hearing Kawada's early 90s theme even though I'm glad it changed. Kawada's laser focus on the head and neck of Jumbo is superb. Jumbo puts Kawada over great for the massive difference between them in card position. I liked the story a lot with Kawada having to use stuff like headlocks, etc. early to control Jumbo because once Jumbo got loose he was just going to destroy Kawada. The last few sleepers put over how much Kawada's strategy worked and how he actually does have Jumbo on the ropes. It puts Kawada over as smart enough to know he's overmatched and willing to work around that. I liked the idea that if Kawada hits the powerbomb it might work and how we didn't get to find out. Kawada kicking out of the backdrop is big. But we know after that there is no hope left. I think this match really elevates Kawada to a guy who can challenge Jumbo. It's clear here that he is not up to the task yet, but you can see a time in the near future where Jumbo will have his hands full with Kawada. And with the slow development of feuds in All Japan I'm almost sure that is the purpose here.- 12 replies

[1991-10-24-AJPW-October Giant Series] Masa Fuchi vs Dan Kroffat
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in October 1991
Referee was Wada Kyohei. I'm not sure if he is head referee yet, but he will be very soon if he isn't. Easily my favorite referee ever. Kroffat and Fuchi were both brilliant in their roles here. Kroffat seemed like he was channeling Kobashi as the match went on. I liked the part where Kroffat decided he'd had enough and just started punching the fuck out of Fuchi. So before Fuchi goes back to the leg he repays that in kind because, well, he's Fuchi goddammit. Usually these juniors matches are meant as midcard, get the crowd riled up type deals but these two made this so much more.- 8 replies

I didn't like the ref immediately giving wright a yellow card for hitting Finlay on the apron only to allow Finlay to do the same multiple times and deliberately attack Wright between rounds with no punishment. Sign me up for more consistent officiating. It got better as the match wore on with the ref refusing to count Finlay's top rope stuff. And the ref allowing Wright to attack on the ground without continuation as Finlay had. Some really cool spots including the ridiculous phantom hair pull. The ref constantly blowing the whistle is something I could do without.

Varsity Club is going strong. Pillman will definitely not last, but Simmons might on intimidation alone. The British guys feuding is a really good idea and would be incredibly entertaining. Milwaukee got their money's worth with that card.

Really good promo from Simmons. I thought it got a little heavy handed at points, but overall very good. Harley's reaction to it was good too and I really do wish we'd have gotten that full segment.- 7 replies
