People's perception of wrestler's sizes.
rzombie1988 replied to Memphis Mark's topic in Megathread archive
I do think you should at least be a certain size to be a wrestler. There's room for people of all body types, but too much of any look makes it less special. I think you can do a lot more when people buy that you could hurt someone. -
PRIDE/K-1 at their peaks were better than both. People like Fedor and Crocop were the last real guys who felt larger than life to me.
-
Yeah Sid was the man. The master of the squash match, was fine in ring and was always very good character wise.
-
Fuji def wasn't the worst manager. Humperdink/Baron/Johnny V/Frenchy Martin/Coach/Superstar Graham were worse in their roles. He was an average promo but his cane was really protected. Even in a kayfabe sense he ended up beating all of his peers minus the Wiz as he took Yoko to the title, though dumping Demolition may be one of the worst manager moves ever.

Devastation Inc, Embry, Jarrett and JJ Funk got involved and that unfortunately ended this. This was a really great and classic match. Parsons was on top of his game here and was such an awesome heel. He was just nasty trying to make Brick call him Master. I loved how he had it in control and was strutting and taunting the fans, with the fans buying into it and yelling at him back. Loved his punches and his selling was also a ton of fun too. This was your classic brawl and a total lost gem that I was thrilled to discover. I legit may go 5 stars because this was pretty great. Definitely a must see if you are into the Memphis brawling style. I was really disappointed when the heels jumped in and ended this, but nothing I can really do about it. I agree 100%. Please keep that stuff away from here. This thread was already approved as an off the topic of wrestling area. I agree we don't need to discuss politics on this site, but if you want to have a safe space where you can rip Trump to your desire, there's a million subreddits/websites/television stations that will fit your need. No need to do it here. Sorry, this isn't DVDVR, r/politics or CNN. You don't get to trash one side then try to shut them down when they say something back. If you trash Trump, you are probably going to hear from me. It's as if nothing was learned from the election results. Someone wants to ban me, edit me or report me or whatever, do as you please, but if you are going to give it, you have to take it as well. This forum wouldn't exist if everyone had the same opinion on everything. I think the mods here are more than mature enough to understand that.

I'm feeling good for a change with Trump in charge. Never felt so patriotic as now. Nice to see someone finally call out the MSM on their bullcrap, do what they say they are going to do and nice to see someone putting America's interests first. It's nice not to feel like a stranger in my own country.

Not up to DVDVR standards lol

Black History Month as a whole is pretty patronizing IMO. I have different views on race than other people, but until we can get past race, whether it be for good reasons or bad reasons, race is always going to be an issue.
-
It's a pretty easy gimmick to do IMO. You got 4 big props to play with: - Breaking the cell glass - Jumping on top of the cell - The flooring around the ring - The cage itself Truly not that far off from TLC. I'd be interested in seeing them do a 3v3 Elimination Chamber, which would be as close to Wargames as we are ever going to get. Would love to see a catwalk on top of the cells as well for even more fun.

That's honest to god sorry if that's what WWE qualifies as a PPV in 2017.

Sadly most of the IWC are people who just started watching within the last few years and despite being absolutely clueless, have the loudest voices.

My full review of it is here: http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2017/02/world-of-sport-7121974-tibor-szakacs-vs.html Tibor Szakacs and Big Bruno Elrington went to a 6 round draw with 1 fall a piece. Excellent match. They started off slow, working holds and reversals and trying to get the edge on the mat. Tempers started to flare and Bruno started clubbing Szakacs down to size. Tibor couldn't quite match the blows and Bruno hit some beautiful european uppercuts. Bruno got the first fall kind of of out nowhere after clubbing him and then using the Gory Special. Bruno kept on pounding and not letting go of holds that an old lady in the crowd tried to put a stop to him, which was great. Bruno took his first public warning in the 5th after excessive clubbing and Tibor responded by crossbodying him and then getting the leverage to pin him. The last round was tons of fun as both guys traded with each other and both were scrambling to grab the decisive fall, but could not. The highlight of the last round though was Bruno getting whipped into the corner so hard that even the ref got knocked off balance. This match had it all. Great technical wrestling, Bruno being your big bruiser heel while Tibor was the master of the mat. Some nice strike exchanges, 30 years before it was the norm and they just really sold the story well of Bruno being the big frustrated heel who resorted to clubbing when he couldn't put down Tibor. The announcer was really good, selling the match and explaining the nuances while putting over the story and both guys. Highly recommended and if you want to understand what people mean when they say "Wrestling today sucks" and "guys don't know how to work", this is what they are talking about. No one took any huge bumps, no one did anything they couldn't do for another 20 years without serious injury and they made it look like two guys trying to win, not a gymnastics show. The crowd loved it, I loved it and these two went near 25 minutes and it still wasn't enough. Classics pro wrestling at its finest here and something everyone should watch and copy. I have no idea how Walter doesn't get bookings elsewhere. He's a 6'5 dude who works strong style. ROH, NXT and various Japanese companies should be creaming their pants over him.

Bringing this topic back from the dead. Bam Bam has got to be one of the strangest guys ever. Had all of the tools, had decent to good matches but never took it to the next level or put it all together. It's seriously a huge mystery to me how he managed to do it. Seems that him never sticking around probably hurt his cause the most, which was likely caused by backstage issues. He's one of the few guys who probably does his best stuff near the end of his career.

Who are wrestlers who you think came too soon or too late? My picks are: The Patriot - Couldn't think of a more perfect 70's or 80's babyface. No one really figured him out in the 90's minus the GWF and he was clearly past his time by '97. He'd probably be a heel now with the way the political spectrum is. Not sure how WCW managed to misuse him. Him and Sting would have been a cool team. Superstar Graham - Kind of perfect for his time, but he would have been even bigger if he was in his prime in the 80's. Mike Awesome - Can't believe none of the other Japanese companies didn't try to grab him in the 90's from FMW. Would have been perfect as a second Vader. He's a big muscled up dude who works strong style and flies. Would be amazing in this era and would have been pretty good in the 80's.

JWP's bitten the dust. They close on April 2, 2017. Something about them losing the contract on the name. They will reform in August. You got 11 promotions splitting up a really small pot of fans. Just too much.

DDT Tokyo Joshi Puroresu - 1/4/17 - Yuu vs Shoko Nakajima Full review here: http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2017/02/ddt-tokyo-joshi-puroresu-142017.html Yuu beat Shoko Nakajima with a Last Ride Powerbomb. Excelllent match. Yuu was a total beast here just violently throwing Shoko around and slamming her down. When she throws someone, she throws them then she slams then and it's awesome. Shoko was working as your spunky face here trying to do dropkicks and flying moves to counter beast before failing. Shoko hit the best Northern Lights Suplex I've ever seen and she showed a lot of good babyface fire. Both these girls are legit and while the match was slow in the first few minutes, it gave everyone time to cool down and it set the tone for the bigger finish. Rating:****

Saki Akai beat Miyu Yamashita with a bicycle kick. Man this was good. Akai is the newer version of Yumi Ohka and Yamashita reminds me of a young Chigusa. Both of these girls were really good here. This was all about the kicks and they had tons of nasty ones here. Akai's so lanky that the kicks look really good and Yamashita was really great as the fighting spirit underdog babyface. Akai is so good at working her gimmick and constantly knows how to use her cocky egoist queen persona and does a fabulous job with it. Absolutely loved this and this made the 90 minutes of crap before it almost worthwhile. Go see this match as while these girls do have a few years of wrestling in them, they are ready for WWE. Are these available online? XWT or DDT Universe.

I watched and reviewed DDT's Joshi Pro 1/4/17 show here: http://prowresblog.blogspot.com/2017/02/ddt-tokyo-joshi-puroresu-142017.html Some shots from the show: Thoughts on the show: The first half is awful comedy and the second half is serious wrestling. Totally a tale of two shows but the main and the semi main made it worth it. Saki Akai is the next big thing as the new Ohka/Takako and Yamashita reminds me of a young Chigusa. Yuu stole the show though by just being a judo-throwing tank who has tons of potential. DDT has the talent there, just it's DDT and the comedic shit sucks.

YES to these two from DDT Tokyo Puroresu 1/4/2017 Saki Aki vs Miyu Yamashita Yuu vs Shoko Nakajima Saki Aki vs Miyu Yamashita: Akai is basically a new Yumi Ohka or Takako. She's this tall lanky egotistical snobby gucci girl. She has a man servant who wipes the floor for her. She's a total arrogant bad ass and plays her character to a "T". She used to model too and yeah the sex appeal helps. Miyu is a young Chigusa. Fiery, a kicker and has a mean streak in her. While this did have some comedy crap in it, some of the strikes were a little off and I rated it only ***3/4, I thought this really good. Both girls are already WWE ready and Akai could easily be the top joshi star right now if someone spots her. You could tell just by watching these girls enter that they have the it factor. Yuu vs Shoko Nakajima Yuu is a female Brock. She does all these awesome judo throws and really slams people home. Shoko is your Io-Shirai like babyface girl who flies and has some fire to her. Pretty much a perfect matchup for these two as their puzzle pieces fit right in. They start it off slow and work the match and escalate the violence as it goes further on. Yuu is a fricking bulldozer and you'll love it.

Were there clips of it on the NWA doc release a while back? There was a section of footage shot by one guy from ringside that was included from that era. Don't know, but I'm pretty sure I saw the clip before any doc was released.

Double Jeopardy - Steve Corino vs Jerry Lynn vs Sandman vs Justin Credible This match was absolutely awful. The rules are pretty cool - 2 matches are going on at the same time and the two winners fight each other to determine the winner of the match. Cool scenario, lots of various things you can do with it and it's something really unique. Unfortunately, this was about as bad as you can do it. Remember the 2 matches thing? Well, Sandman doesn't come in until about 5 mins and then drinks for another few in the crowd and they don't do a 2v1 with the heels vs Lynn, so they miss out again. During this, there's bladejobs and people are busted open, while absolutely no one pays attention, including the cameras. This was the WWE Network version too, so no Enter Sandman and weird crowd micing. When the match finally starts, it's no good. Sandman immediately just starts beating up everyone and it basically becomes a four way. No story was worked and they tried but failed to establish a partnership with the two faces of Sandman/Lynn or the two heels of Corino/Credible. Everyone just ends up fighting each other, and 2 people are always outside the ring throwing each other into the barricades. They do some of the weakest ladder spots I've ever seen and Sandman suplexes Corino on a rail while hitting his head off of it. They then do double pins on the Sandman and Lynn...the two faces, leaving only the two heels of Corino/Credible to fight. The crowd doesn't really get into it, but it's a little better than what we got before. Francine and Dawn Marie get in and we get the obligatory Francine thong shot, before the guys get hit in the nuts and Corino hits Credible with an awful superkick to end this. This match was awful and a total fail. This was ECW at its worst and they took a really good concept and completely blew it. I have no idea what they were thinking here.

Why aren't 3-way and 4-way matches a bigger deal?
rzombie1988 replied to rzombie1988's topic in Pro Wrestling
Wanted to chime in with some of the responses. Cena/Rollins/Lesnar was really good. Also enjoyed the Daniels/Ki/Styles one on the very first ROH show. Dragon Gate probably did them the best though and they'd do trios matches with 4 teams which were always tons of fun. I hate to bring up the Barely Legal 3 way, but I remembered enjoying it. >people standing around/laying around The laying around is lazy and lame for sure, but if the guys put effort into purposely going into the corner to get a 2nd wind and stuff, and the announcers actually pushed it, I don't think it would be a problem. >Multi-man matches as filler Definitely one of the problems. Getting guys on the card is no different than wrestlers who "need to get their shit in". >So should battle royals. So should a lot of things. Battle royales are such a great tool that I'm shocked they aren't used more. Toryumon probably did these the best with their "Dragon Scrambles" as they'd do pins and submissions and actually work a match along with the battle royale portion. You can just do so many different storylines and create all kinds of fresh matches out of them. They can be boring for sure, but the potential tools you can work with in those are really great.
