Is CageSideSeats a respected site? Just got linked to an article on there that claims Rollins vs Bryan in an Ironman Match should be the main event of Wrestlemania, not to mention this classic gem:

"If Sting is going to have any shot of having anything resembling a classic in his one and only WWE match, Triple H is probably the safest bet to give it to him."

No. CSS is run by a bunch of marks. They hate everything about pro wrestling and are very condescending to its readers. Just look at the disclaimers within the 'rumor' section on that site. Its a very 'pat-on-the-head' our readers are 'special' mentality. The site's main demographic is smarks between the ages of 12 and 19. You know. The people who think Cena is a bad wrestler, WWE Divas 'get no respect', and other early 2000 internet wrestling fandom tropes. The site had been going down-hill for a long time but what really got me to 'check out' of that site once-and-for all is one of the articles written about The Million Dollar Man's documentary and it was titled something like "The Million Dollar Man Has a New Movie About His Story-- But is it Worth Telling?". The guys over there just can't get their heads out their own asses. Even the Smackdown/Mainevent spoilers are full of un-needed snark. If CSS eliminated the smark/snarky shit it would probably be passable on a good day.

There is no way the admin or any of the staff writers (expect for maybe one or two) can say with a straight-face that they are not overly jaded and/or completely burnt out of pro wrestling. It just makes for bad reading when you know someone is just rolling his/her eyes while writing a piece.

Regarding a rewatch project are there any coliseum home videos that have any matches that are essential to watching?

Obviously the Smack em Whack em tape for the Bret/Shawn Ladder match and the Bret/Flair title change and I guess the HBK dvd for the tag title change that never aired but any others?

Michaels vs Perfect from Stars & Stripes Forever (March '91, right around Mania hype season) was tremendous. Heenan's killing it on commentary, the bumping is insanely energetic, and the action never drops off from bell to bell. Just a HIGHLY entertaining little throwaway match that actually serves to build up the IC Title feud at the time.

The singles matches from the Survivor Series Showdowns were always solid, too. Haven't checked lately, but I know most of 'em used to be up on YouTube.

Cageside has some head scratching content but I don't think it's as bad as fakeplastictrees said. It's strange because I think in a lot of cases they take it too easy on WWE. But yeah the smark tropes that were outdated in 2004 are needless and annoying there. The recaps can be embarrassing too

Another interesting concept in appealing to the hardcore fan of the mid-90s:

Dutch Mantel will be doing another Ring of Dreams camp. For more info you can contact him at 2928 High Rigger Dr., Nashville, TN 37217. It's not a wrestling school, but an opportunity to learn rudimentary basics of working a match, then put together a match with an experienced worker and have it videotaped for yourself, kind of like a fantasy baseball camp.

They recently had an evaluation on Lance Storm listing his strengths and weaknesses where chairshots didn't even come up. How does that happen?

Bret-Owen vs Steiners is my favorite Coliseum match. Perfect-Piper from Battle of the WWF Superstars is really good too.

Same thing can be said for Meltzer, honestly. I've felt that way for years. His heart doesn't seem to be in pro wrestling anymore. He much prefers UFC, which is why half the newsletter is littered with that junk. (Sorry, I don't give a fuck about UFC, except when it's relevant to pro wrestling - Brock, CM Punk, etc.)

Not that I'm comparing CSS to Meltzer...I'm just saying.

Anyway, I like CSS. They can come across as overly snarky, I agree, but I disagree that they're burned out on wrestling. If anything, they seem to be having a lot of fun over there. What you call markishness, I call genuine enthusiasm.

Then again, maybe we're reading different people on that site?

What is the story here? This is the first I've heard of Lance Storm's chairshots being evaluated. Are they really bad? I honestly can't remember what they looked like. If it's not something he did often, I can understand why they'd look terrible. Maybe he was trying too hard to be safe? Gonna look for some YouTube footage now.

EDIT: Found this. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x37dva_ecw-rvd-vs-lance-storm_sport

10 minute mark. The chairshots look...okay? Maybe a bit hesitant and soft, but I don't have any real issue with it.

Is there another chairshot in that match that I missed? (I was only skimming to look for the spot.)

Another video had this in the comments section: "No no no....this by no means is not as funny as Lance Storm's "ahmm" chair shot on RVD at Barely Legal '97 I believe . To think it happened in ECW, in Philly. Ya , the fans let him hear it." The Worst Chair Shot Ever (not about Storm).

WrestleFest '94, home of said Harts/Steiners match, is a pretty solid watch front to back. Good Martel/Savage match, HBK/Razor in decent action.

Invasion '92 has an exclusive of the good first Bret/Flair match from November 1991. And SuperTape 1 is probably easier to hunt down for the 1/90 Rockers/Powers match than the MSG show itself. I could probably come up with a bunch of these if I looked at the match listings.

There's a DiBiase-Michaels match from mid-1990, on a tape released in the UK as 'WWF Hottest Matches' (I think) that's well worth a look. It popped up on Vintage Collection a few years ago too.

That was the one that aired on Prime Time if I recall right both Jannetty & Virgil got involved near the end of the match I think.

Can't recall the tape, but Michaels-Hennig in early 1991 was very good. And Invasion '92 had Michaels-Flair and Hart-Flair - both really enjoyable, last time I looked.

The Stars & Stripes forever special for more build towards Bossman/Perfect for the IC belt. Something tells me they could have come up with a better challenger who seemed like they had a chance as Bossman winning the title at mania didnt seem likely.

Wrestlefest 94 was a pretty decent tape. Loved that Kings Court exclusive where Lawler ran his mouth about Bret, had a clause that said he can say what he want but Bret cant touch him or Bret pays a ton of money then Bret says screw it and just does it anyway. Loved that segment. Pretty sure Taker & Crush battled on that one unless im thinking of hits from the crypt.

One thing I was curious on. I cant remember who said it but one of the guys said one of Shawn's best ever matches was when him & Marty battled the Brain Busters. Any ideas what match the person was referring to? I dont think they were on about the SNME match but I think it may have been Gene Okerlund who mentioned it unless he was referring to a Boston match or some house show.

Wasn't the very fun Jannetty & 1-2-3 Kid vs. Headshrinkers match (probably the only successful taped tag title defense of Jannetty/Kid) also on Wrestlefest 94?

There was an immediate, noticeable drop in quality when Bix stopped writing for the place. I stopped reading them at that point and thinking about it that may have led to me finding this place. Geno Mrosko is awful.

Im sure I read somewhere Sammartino & Hogan had a tag match together in the late 80s.

Now that I have a litle more context to SMW's Fan Weeks I find the idea to be pretty innovative in doing something that appeals directly to the most hardcore of hardcore fans:

SMW has finalized plans for a one-week long fan convention from 8/13 to 8/20 aimed specifically at newsletter readers which is the first time any wrestling promotion has ever attempted such an undertaking. SMW will provide all fans to ringside seats for seven house shows in the eight day period, hotel rooms at the Grand Hotel in Pigeon Forge, TN (in the heart of the Smoky Mountain tourist area), bus transportation to all the house shows, a lunch with all the babyfaces, a dinner with all the heels, a wrestling training class with Tim Horner and a interview/press conference Q&A session with Jim Cornette which fans can videotape for their own collection. SMW will be planning three major events during that period and hold one television taping. On 8/13 they'll have a show called "Hot August Night in Motown," in Morristown, TN, 8/14 is the second annual "Fire on the Mountain" card in Johnson City, TN which will be headlined by a Rage in the cage (War Games) and 8/20 will be a card entitled "K-Town Showdown" in Knoxville. The television taping will be 8/16 in Clintwood, VA. There is both the full eight days plan and also a shortened five day version from 8/13 to 8/17. Besides the regular SMW crew, already confirmed as working the big shows are W*ING wrestlers Crash the Terminator, Miguelito Perez and Yukihiro Kanemura (who will have a revenge match with Kevin Sullivan on 8/13), plus Mongolian Stomper and Big Bossman.

I was lucky enough to attend both the 1993 Fanweek and half of the 1995 fanweek. It was an amazing experience. It truly gave you a first hand experience of being in a territory.

Cornette was very accessible. Brian Hitlebrand (Mark Curtis) ran the show for the fans. In 1995, Downtown D-Lo Brown was my driver. He carted me all over Tennessee and Kentucky.

I was 20 (1 week before turning 21) during the first fanweek ('93) and i was absolutely exhausted by the end of it, though I would've stayed for another week it was so much fun. It seemed we never arrived "home" before 1 or 2am. Some nights were 3-4am. Then you were back up and on the road by noon to do it all over again. It certainly earned my respect for the boys who were taking bumps and doing the same drives.

A few great memories for me:

Sitting in a hotel room with Dave Meltzer watching Hokuto v Kandori from Dreamslam 1 and Flair v Steamboat from Music City Showdown. I realized at that moment that as big of a wrestling fan as I was (and I was), I was nowhere near the fan he was. He watched intently, pointed out things to the few of us and popped louder than any of the "hardcore fans" in the room watching the matches.

Another great Meltzer memory was stopping at a Perkins at 2:30am to eat dinner with 20 other wrestling fans and one fan (Marty from New York, most well known for having Tammy Sytch and Jimmy Del Ray light his hat on fire at a BBQ) persisted to argue with Dave about how Bob Backlund was a much better pro wrestler than Ric Flair. Dave was doing his best to be respectful, but Marty's argument that Backlund would still be champ (this was in 1993) if it wasn't for Arnold Skaaland, was his #1 argument point.

Lastly, in '95, we went to a USWA show at the Louisville Gardens. This was in the midst of the SMW v USWA feud. Of course, we were all SMW fans. Cheering the "heel" outsiders. We needed a police escort out of the building and out of Louisville. True story. The business was still alive and well in Kentucky and Tennessee in 1995.

Saw some amazing matches and watched some amazing workers. You get a completely different view of some guys when you see them work every night. Great times.

A couple of babyfaces (one basically an actual baby at the time) aggressively working over the injured leg of Bret Hart? Nah thanks.

Does anyone know when the change was made that wrestlers on WWE TV are not allowed to work the crowd and have to work toward the hard camera at all times instead of working all angles of the arena? Is it possible there's a correlation between that change and the heat declining so strongly?
