khawk20 Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 I kind of feel like inducting Ali would be in poor taste considering that the HOF contains Antonio Inoki, the guy largely responsible for Ali being in the condition he's in. All those leg kicks caused his Parkinsons?
shoe Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 Nobody was announced last night? No. I kind of feel like inducting Ali would be in poor taste considering that the HOF contains Antonio Inoki, the guy largely responsible for Ali being in the condition he's in. I've never heard this talking point? I mean the years of boxing had no effect. It was Antinio Inoki's leg kicks were the cause.

I think the logic would be if Ali hadn't got his legs kicked to hell, then he wouldn't have taken so much punishment in his later fights due to being slower and less spry on his feet.

That's grasping.
NintendoLogic Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 Yeah, the story goes that Inoki did so much damage to Ali's legs that his mobility was permanently impaired, which played a huge role in the pummelings he took in the final matches of his career. You can doubt it if you want, but it's not something I pulled out of my ass. It's been put forth by boxing historians.
khawk20 Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 I blamed those pummelings more on him being fat and out of shape with no reflexes to speak of left in the tank. I won't dispute the leg kicks slowed him down some in his later bouts, but his speed was already noticably less after his sabbatical from boxing during the Vietnam war. He was already losing steam by that point.
Al Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 Even if there's any substance behind Inoki hurting Ali, first that's not really basis for ill will in that environment. Second, Ali's doctor quit after 1977 because Ali refused to stop fighting. Inoki shouldn't get blamed because Ali refused to accept his condition.
Jimmy Redman Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 Nobody was announced last night? No, Warrior was the guy they announce early to fuel ticket sales. Yeah, the rest of the class won't be announced until after Elimination Chamber most likely, then they start going one a week during the hard sell.
Matt D Posted January 23, 2014 Report Posted January 23, 2014 On some level I'm more annoyed that it's being branded as an internal WWE leak by some people, especially since, as Matt said, we know the Vince letter was was already circulating in some places. You should look at the Austin/Rocker Dropper lawsuit next.
Sidebottom Posted January 24, 2014 Report Posted January 24, 2014 Even if there's any substance behind Inoki hurting Ali, first that's not really basis for ill will in that environment. Second, Ali's doctor quit after 1977 because Ali refused to stop fighting. Inoki shouldn't get blamed because Ali refused to accept his condition. This. Ali knew what he was signing up for. It's not as if anybody took advantage of him.
Mini Bennett Posted January 26, 2014 Report Posted January 26, 2014 Something I just noticed: isn't it kind of shitty neither Brock Lesnar or The Rock have attended the Hall of Fame since they've been back with WWE?
Sidebottom Posted January 26, 2014 Report Posted January 26, 2014 Something I just noticed: isn't it kind of shitty neither Brock Lesnar or The Rock have attended the Hall of Fame since they've been back with WWE? Not really. It's like saying it's shitty of me for not attending work functions for free either.
Edwin Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 Jake "the Snake" Roberts is being inducted into the WWE HOF.
goodhelmet Posted January 28, 2014 Author Report Posted January 28, 2014 Much better that Jake gets his moment at the Hall of Fame than the Rumble.
Matt D Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 Guy could have gotten both! Does DDP Induct?
Cobra Commander Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 uh yeah, the "Inoki helped cause Ali's Parkinsons" thing is an amazing statement. Not sure that 30 rounds total with Ken Norton and Earnie Shavers in a year would be good for your health no matter the condition of your legs. Not to mention Manila in 1975. Also, Ali's reflexes included a lot more leaning back from punches than most heavyweights as opposed to outright running, IIRC. So I don't think his legs were the x-factor when he was 35 and fighting Earnie Shavers. Anyways.. Jake is in, the video package was pretty solid. Two 1996 Lawler feuds are in the class of 2014 Why do I have a suspicion that Brutus Beefcake is getting inducted this year purely to draw Hogan in?
goc Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 I think they brought Jake in for a physical to see if he could do the Rumble and he didn't pass so they threw him a bone with the Old School Raw appearance. I have absolutely nothing to back that up but pure speculation however.
Al Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 Beefcake wouldn't be a bad idea next year, when the festivities will be in the vicinity of San Francisco. On that note, I'd be surprised if they didn't induct Ray Stevens next year either.
Sidebottom Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 Glad to see Jake get inducted, obviously well deserved. DDP has to be inducting him, surely, it's the choice which makes the most sense for a number of reasons.
shakla Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 DDP is likely a strong candidate to induct Jake. I wonder who else would work. I don't know of Jake having a best friend in the business (unless DDP counts for now). Would DiBiase work? A lot of talk about Bearer. Anyone think they will acknowledge his past career/ring names for the promo videos if so?
Sidebottom Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 Dibiase has often spoken about his fondness for his matches with Jake, and they certainly go back a long way. But you don't tend to associate the two names.
cheapshot Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 I'd expect DDP to do the intduction of Jake, that or like Sidebottom said, DiBiase would also be someone who has history working Jake over multiple territories.
shoe Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 I expect DDP, but could see Steamboat. They had that moment at I believe at CAC last year with the speech and hug.
flyonthewall2983 Posted February 11, 2014 Report Posted February 11, 2014 I wouldn't be surprised if Ted did it alongside DDP. It doesn't have to be just one. Lita was announced tonight. Warrior...yay. Has he made any statements about it yet?
