Random Reasons why people stopped watching wrestling
Mrzfn replied to Strummer's topic in Pro Wrestling
My brother is willing to watch wrestling with me, but he can't stop himself from saying "that NEVER works" whenever anybody leans down for a backdrop attempt in modern wrestling. -
The Lex/Hogan stuff post match is great, but to this day I don't understand why Hogan had to say Luger had a "stinky" hand. Baffling.

Random Reasons why people stopped watching wrestling
Mrzfn replied to Strummer's topic in Pro Wrestling
He never really watched in the first place, but when I first started watching without fail my Dad would always walk into the room when Rikishi was on. Needless to say, he didn't quite get the appeal. -
This is the most common complaint I hear, but I feel like I never see it. The guy can be methodical, sure, but I always see him doing a dozen little things to keep the match interesting. An old school touch here, a bit of psychology there, a lot of subtly well built sequences... well, to each their own I suppose.

I find it so weird that people are over the moon on the Revival but down on Roode, when honestly I feel like they bring a lot of the same stuff to the table. I'm a fan of Roode and I'm curious how far he can ride this Glorious bit.

[2016-11-20-WWE-Survivor Series] Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar
Mrzfn replied to GOTNW's topic in November 2016
Didn't care for this personally. If they had done this with someone like Jericho or Miz, I'd be fine, but Lesnar? Dude breaks the streak, squashes Cena, makes a joke of any current roster guy he goes up against, but old man Goldberg runs him over with ease. Maybe it works as an in-the-moment pop, but it just feels like bad storytelling to me.- 14 replies

There definitely was. Teamed with Mark Henry for a hot second, if I recall.

[2007-05-20-WWE-Judgment Day] John Cena vs Great Khali
Mrzfn replied to Microstatistics's topic in May 2007
I think it's the One Night Stand match that people like, or at least regard as the best someone could get out of Khali.- 2 replies

Haha, it seems I am way off the majority here. I actually prefer Bischoff to Tony at this point, who has devolved into an insincere forced enthusiasm bicker-er. I also actually really liked the match, it had a lot of energy and far, far better booking than Uncensored (which is a low bar, but still). Would have made more sense for the heels to go over (for once), but I'd honestly rather Flair took the fall than Vader, especially since they were apparently building up for yet another Hogan/Vader match and they'd already done plenty to damage his name value.

I'm actually amazed to not see the Arn/Wright Slamboree match on the set, watched it on the Network and I thought it was fantastic.

Live Wrestling: What are you watching, what are you going to watch?
Mrzfn replied to Grimmas's topic in Pro Wrestling
Hitting the CHIKARA double header finale in December. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it should be a good time. -
Awful, awful, awful. I actually enjoyed the first Hogan/Vader match so I was minorly hopeful for this, but what a horrible mess. Cheap Warrior clone, poorly explained Jimmy Hart "drama", Flair falling apart when anyone touched him, MORE masked men, nobody bothers with the strap, those truly terrible chair shots, Hogan can beat everyone himself anyway so why does he even need Renegade, and I don't even know what they were going for with Savage and Arn. So Arn was the original masked man who appeared in this match, but I guess Savage found him backstage, tied him up, had an identical outfit, put it on, appeared in the ring after Arn appeared (looking like a joke), and somehow Hogan and friends knew it was him... I guess? But even if you somehow accept all of that, for god's sake why do it? A mess of epic proportions and a great way to kill the shit out of anybody's interest in Vader (or Flair, or anyone...).

This match was pretty good until the incomprehensibly stupid finish, which was bad enough to ruin the whole thing from me. From Flair in a dress (and full makeup and painted nails, why??) to the absolute stupidity of Savage somehow getting a DQ win on a PPV that explicitly has no DQs, it seriously goes to hell in the final minutes.

One of Savage's "highlights" is shaking hands with Hulk Hogan. Pretty much sums it up.

Surprised to see Charlotte is running away with this thing. I voted for her without much hesitation, but I really thought the winds were blowing the other way.

That's extremely Heenan-esque, and I love it.

This is really interesting and timely for me because just this morning I watch Kobashi vs. Joe for the first time, a match I have heard the "cosplay" accusation leveled at. Personally I didn't interpret the match that way. Does Joe use several classic All Japan spots? Yes, but not as pure imitation, but rather as tools to build a larger story. On one side it's Samoa Joe, on top of the world but now placed against a towering legend, trying to apply everything he has watched and learned from his opponent's past, and on the other side you have Kobashi, who slaps down the young gun whenever he sees him trying to use the same tactics he's battled so many times in the past. I thought it worked even better because whenever Joe was forced to go back to his own offense, he actually seemed to make a lot more headway. It's not a case of Samoa Joe "dressing up" his moveset like Kawada or whoever, it's a device to further the story of the match. I have seen cases where I thought wrestlers were imitating others a little too much without adding anything of their own, which is what the complaint boils down to, but I also think it is thrown out too often as a blanket complaint, when in many cases it's more of a question of influence or homage. I think it's hard to say where to draw the line, because everyone borrows from everyone else in wrestling, especially now when basically everything has been done in one form or another.

I think sometimes it can. One match that isn't that popular in these parts (I think) but I have some fondness for is the Taker/HBK match at Mania 25, and I remember what put it over the top for me at the time was Taker dropping himself onto his head on that botched dive. I didn't even think of it in terms of a botch at the time, all I knew is that I felt the stakes were raised a lot when it happened. Another example this puts me in mind of is Kurt Angle trying to throw Shane McMahon through those panes of glass in '01. Another match that I think is not so popular here, but I feel it was exactly those spots which really got the match over for most fans.

They might have crossed paths during the '97 Rumble, but I think that's it.

After thinking Vader/Duggan from Starrcade was awful, despite the hype it got from some corners, I was almost afraid to watch this... surprise, surprise, I actually enjoyed it for the most part. Yes, it's got some pretty bad stuff, but it also has some unexpected good stuff, like Vader NOT pulling his punches at all (it seemed), and kicking out of the leg drop at 1 and all that. Bad hulk up and bad finish, of course, but not nearly as bad overall as I was afraid of.

I am actually surprised at so much positive hype for this match, I was not a fan and I didn't even know that was possible for me to dislike a Vader match from this era. Duggan seems to take up about 80% of the offense, and while yes it looks better than it ever did in WWF, it's still not nearly good enough to justify Vader being so much on the backfoot, which he generally does a little too much of anyway but not like this. Even when he did go on offense he seemed to be holding back a lot, early on he tried to do one of his clubbing blows but Duggan stopped him, and then after that all Vader would throw is mediocre looking bodyshots. Pretty far step down from the way Vader has been smashing around guys like Sting and Boss all year. And with all this, you still have Duggan getting a clean visual win over Vader before the finish, Vader being the man who they are supposed to be building up as a monster for Hogan! Maybe it was the booking, maybe it was the fact that I'm still reeling from Duggan's title win in the first place, but this did not come off well for me.

I'm more in the "past his prime" camp. He's much heavier and slower than his peak, which is expected, but he still tries for the same style, jumping and diving around in most matches. I feel like he'd be better off if he adapted a little more to what his body can do now. Then again, maybe it's just perspective. He's certainly better now than he was before coming in, he let himself go for years.

Gonna go off the reservation with an "other" pick... I think all the Tajiri matches from 03-04 are absolutely awesome. I'm not saying it's a landslide or anything, but I think they deserve to be in the conversation.

I still like GAB but I think it's got the worst ending by far. Sting not only takes himself out with his own move, but with a move that is actually named after him. It makes him look like an even bigger idiot than he normally does.

Not sure about best, but my favorite to watch is British style. It's just so clever, to the point where I know it becomes a turn off for some people, but there's very little I like more in wrestling than watching one hold turn into another as if by magic and having to rewind and slow-mo to find out how it actually occurred. Plus when done well there's an incredible sense of struggle and strategy involved.
