soup23
I watched Starrcade 91 for the podcast this morning. Sort of a spoiler but I hated it a ton and hope to expound on why in detail. By contrast, Grimmas asked a year and a half ago to be on that show and I was listening to the latest Voices of Wrestling show and Joe was talking about how much he loved Starrcade 91 too. This begs the question, what shows or PPV's do you love or champion more than the reviews that are out for that show.
Grimmas
Besides the Lethal Lottery, which I will get into on WTBBP, there is my favourite show ever in Survivor Series 89. I did a whole podcast on it for P2BN, so if you want the 90 minute version it is there. For the short version, super fun show, great commentary, fun matches, everybody at prime of characters and well booked (minus the Hogan match.) Blehschmidt
After reading the thread title, I was going to come in here and post Starrcade '91! It was the first PPV I ever saw live, and I remember watching it with my best friend, just a few days after Christmas. It was also the first show I tracked down when I realized that the whole tape/dvd trading world existed, because I had spent years only owning the clipped commercial release, and although some of the matches drag and are lacking, getting to relive watching the whole show again was awesome, and for this reason, that show will always hold a special place in my heart. goodhelmet
Without a doubt, Wrestlemania 2. My parents bought the PPV for me as a kid and I have always had a soft spot for the entire card.
JerryvonKramer
Wrestlemania 5 for me. It might have been my first VHS and I watched the thing over and over. Run DMC, Piper and Morton Downey, Martel's heel turn, the Garvin stomp on Frenchy Martin, DiBiase running in and stealing Damian, Heenan top of the world with Rude IC title win -- it's all etched into my memory forever and vividly. And even now, when I can appreciate the show pretty much stinks (especially uncut), I still love that one. I probably wouldn't have ever become a wrestling fan if it wasn't for that VHS. thebrainfollower
Would it be heresy to say I prefer WM VII to III and think Warrior-Savage is better than Steamboat-Savage? Cause I think both of those things. Also Summerslam 90 was the first PPV I ever saw live so it holds a special memory. Although, at age 10 my parents STILL considered me too young to stay up late so I was off to bed after Harts-Demos with the Betamax taping the rest. I think that's why I still love that tag match more than others, it "main evented" my first PPV live experience.

DMJ
Halloween Havoc 91'. I've seen HH91' get called one of the worst shows ever, probably due to the hokeyness of Chamber of Horrors match and Simmons/Luger obviously not living up to what WCW/NWA fans may have expected from a World Title main event match compared to what they got with Flair, but as a kid, this show was mind-blowing. The midcard of this show also includes some of the worst gimmicks of its time (Oz, The Patriots, Van Hammer). Still, even as a time capsule to go back and watch, this one puts a smile on my face from beginning to end.
Sidebottom
Wrestlemania 9 for me. For all the hate it gets, I refuse to look at it objectively. To me it will always be one of my favourite ever events and I'll continue to watch it through the eyes of when I was a kid watching it and anticipating it for the first time. Even seeing photos from the event makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Something about early 90's WWF always struck a chord with me and this event encapsulates those feelings. It's also fitting that I grew up to have some amazing nights in Caesars Palace,

Can we put Steamboat/Savage and by virtue Mania 3 as one of the more overrated of all time? There's a match that doesn't do much for me. Steenalized
Wrestlemania XIV. Not the first PPV I owned on VHS, but easily the one I watched the most. Austin winning was huge to me, especially with the Tyson turn. I enjoyed every match as a kid except Mero/Goldust and I still think it holds up now. Smack2k
My first thought...Wrestlemania II Gonna wax nostalgic: The first PPV I ever got...I had just got into wrestling in January that year at 7 years old and was HOOKED by this show...still believing in what I was seeing, I couldnt wait for this show and at that time, it didnt disappoint. I got to see all the stars against other stars, which I rarely saw...and I got to see the Huikster bloody and take out that dastardly Bundy after Bundy had attacked and hurt my hero and put him in the hospital. Because of this show and lead up, I STILL love Bundy and rate him WAY higher than he has any right to be...I fuckin love the guy.. Some moments that stick in my head forever: - The grittiness and unpolished presentation of the show (I was a broadcast journalist major). PPV was still really new and they were getting their feet wet on presentation and going in and out of segments...dead air here and there, strange video cuts, strange shots of the crowd, long shots...etc.. - Interviewing the NFL Players in the lead up about the battle rotal and particularly asking them how they'd fare falling 10 or so feel from teh top rope to the floor - Andre tossing out the Harts to win the Battle Royal - The NFL Guys in the ring...I had just discovered the obsession I still have with Football in 85, and those guys were like superheroes to me as well - Fridge pulling out Studd - Terry Funk's knee "injury" in his tag match - Watching the guys bring the New Cage to the ring (the birth of the blue, as they said then "reinforced cage to support Bundy" - Jesse's interview with Bundy and Heenan pre-match "That slow ride to the Hospital.." - Bundy could cut a good promo... - Hogan on top of the cage ripping the shirt off - Hogan taking the belt off and dropping it on the ring, looking at Bundy like "here it is motherfucker, you think you took me out and can take this, no fuckin way.." When this was redone on DVD in the Mania collection, seeing the main event in great color and video (I have the original PPV as well as the Clamshell tape), I have watched the main event probably 20 times...I fuckin love it! Loss
NWO Souled Out. Terrible in-ring show, but such a ballsy endeavor that was such a complete departure from the normal wrestling aesthetic that I still respect it.
Matt D
Nostalgia wise: nothing hits the spot quite like Survivor Series 90, though Summerslam 91 comes close, as does basically the entire of Summer/Fall 1991 WCW (my essay for Starrcade 91 will be sort of a love letter to shared universe trappings in early 90s wrestling). And the Patriot/Dark Patriot feud from GWF. I do sort of apologize for a lot of that by saying "it's nostalgia" though.
Johnny Sorrow
I recently rewatched Mania 2 and loved it. Shit, the LA part is really great. Funks vs. JYD/ Tito is a fucking awesome match.
Johnny Sorrow
By the way, never apologize for wrestling you enjoy. If you love something and it's entertained you, there's nothing to apologize for.
Timbo Slice
SummerSlam '94. Bull Nakano freaked me the hell out as a kid, loved the cage match, Taker return, Neilsen bullshit, all of it. Totally captivated 10-year-old me and will always hold a soft spot in my heart for it. Another one in no need of apology - really solid mid card, althogh lacking a genuinely great match. And Austin-HBK starts off something big. anarchistxx
APW King Of The Indies 2001 will always hold a place in my heart, even though it is probably very dated now [Think this is the tournment I'm thinking of - had a disc of it with Ki/Dragon going about forty in the main event, some matches are clipped IIRC]. AJW Dreamrush has to be up there as well, fantastic card from top to bottom and got me hooked on Joshi for a little while. There are also random shows that I really dig that usually coincided with the height of my fandom - watched the 18/09/05 NOAH show about five times. KENTA/SUWA stole the show but there is also a ridiculously fun tag with Kobashi/Taue taking on Hashi and a grumpy as fuck Akiyama. Misawa vs Rikio for the GHC, a very young Morishima vs Marifuji, Yone vs Suzuki, a really cool six man. Great show.
