Favorite build-up promo video to a big match

The one actually at WrestleMania was better, but I liked the tone of these videos building up to the Iron Man match.

 

The one before Hogan/McMahon at WM 19 was pretty amazing too, particularly the choice of music.

I love the sit-down interview Austin and Rock did before WM 17. That promo video prior to their match was also amazing.

Man all these so far have been awesome and all are ones I thought of when thinking of a question like this.

 

My personal pick to throw in would be actually from a company I don't care for and was fairly recent but CZW's video promo to plug Onita vs Tremont. As much as it was all was a bit of a clusterf**k in the end, this promo made me really go out of my way to watch a group I really never watch so I think that's what makes great promos. This captured who these guys were, what the purpose of the match was and why it was important to see.

That Hogan/Rock promo video that blends perfectly into Hogan's nWo entrance is fucking incredible.

Undertaker-HBK for the retirement match is already mentioned and probably my favorite too. HHH-Steiner at the Royal Rumble, not sure what the song is at the end but was a good choice.

Of those listed, the Survivor Series '02 first Chamber one to "Always" by Saliva is an all time favorite along with the Bryan "Monster" vid and the Taker/Shawn WM 26 "Running Up That Hill". Love those and really wish there were more of that caliber on a regular basis these days. Here's some more all time favorites of mine.

 

Test/Steiner "Suffocate" Unforgiven 03, did a really fantastic job at making a midcard feud come off like a huge deal.

 

Vince/Bret "Human" WM 26, regardless of the actual match I f'n loved the build so much and this video, really enjoyed the first half of 2010 in general.

I've always loved the one Austin did for the Bret match at Survivor Series 1996.

 

 

I also have a soft spot in my heart for the promo video for Benoit/Kane at Bad Blood 2004 because they did a surprisingly good job at making a match that was pretty much put together as an afterthought seem like a decades-long blood feud.

Never was a Limp Bizkit fan but nothing tops the Mania 17 My Way video promo.

That Miz promo is fantastic. Really made him feel like a big deal at a time when fans weren't too receptive to him being a main eventer.

I thought the Miz one was pretty funny. It's the perfect kind of thing for someone with that much hubris to do.

 

I'm surprised there's not more WCW stuff cited here as I feel like they could be just as good with that at times too.

I love The Miz "Hate Me Now" promo. What I find interesting though is that that video, along with Cena's hype video from that same night, highlighted how bad the build to the match was as they couldn't even cobble together a single cohesive video to highlight the storyline.

In terms of taking a lukewarm feud and making it look like Rock vs Austin this thing is a piece of art.

Here's my two most recent favorites, both from 2016. As said before, I wish they'd nail these more often.

 

Reigns/HHH "Hail to the King" made this feel real big time despite the obvious outcome of it all.

 

MITB 2016 "Black Honey", did the best job in years at putting over how big of a deal MITB is and made this one feel real special.

As an example of how not to do this, the Triple vs Seth Rollins one from last year's Mania really took me out of it. Maybe it's just me but HHH's overblown transformation into the King of Kings was pretty laughable.

Also I remember the Roman/Hunter video making me howl with laughter. It was during the height of 'Political Hit' and the video consists of Hunter being the most badass evil badass to ever badass like an evil badass and Roman's line was like "I just want to be a nice guy and help people." Fucking howled.
