Would like to see Bruno/Sarge. Did the WWF tape the shows that did not air?

As far as we know, the show wasn't taped.

I think someone on this board had a source in the WWE with some knowledge of the WWE Library. He might want to ask. The other Holy Grail in the vault, if it was taped, is this:

WWF @ New York City, NY - Madison Square Garden - August 24, 1981 (22,000)

Televised on the MSG Network:

WWF World Champion Bob Backlund fought WWF IC Champion Don Muraco to a 60-minute time-limit draw

This isn't in circulation from way back when, if it was taped. It hasn't hit 24/7, or the web or any dvd release.

When the Backlund-Valentine 60 minute draw showed up a few years ago, it gave me hope that all those MSG cards are probably taped and in the vault, just never aired for whatever reason.

I'd really like to see the Backlund-Adonis rematch from February 1982, The first Snuka-Backlund MSG bout where Backlund got stretchered out, and Backlund-Orton from later that summer. None of those cards appear to have aired either, but I think they are probably in the vault.

Funny those are all 1982 cards.

Forgot about the Backlund-Orton. That would be very interesting as it's longer than their Philly matches:

05/22/82 Philly #1: Bob Orton Jr. defeated Bob Backlund via count-out at 16:12

06/26/82 Philly #2: Bob Backlund defeated Bob Orton Jr. in a lumberjack match at 12:12

08/02/82 MSG: Bob Backlund defeated Bob Orton Jr. at 23:38

Longer, and after they had their spots down pat.

No need to build to a rematch, so go out there and just have a match. I thought that was a positve thing for the Bob-Rose match later that month in MSG, which was really strong for their only MSG match.

Yeah, Bob-Don 60 and Backlund-Orton would be a pair of the 80s Grails in the vault. The second Slaughter match in 1983 would be interesting if it was taped. The first one was much better than espected, and very heated in a period when Bob supposedly was dead in MSG. Second Pater-Backlund isn't out and about. First and third matches are excellent.

There are lots of things from the 70s that would be Grailish in the vault.

I really think that WWE struck gold with Alberto Del Rio. Good thinking on Vince's part to not actually give him the mask that he was rumored to debut with. The guy has amazing facial expressions. If the future of WWE is people like C.M. Punk and Alberto Del Rio, there is a reason to be excited!

Now if only this feud with Rey Mysterio would finally end!

Perry Saturn is back from the grave with a pretty surreal interview with Bill Apter. Crazy stuff. But maybe this post would better fit in the porn thread.

Holy shit, that's pretty heavy. Hopefully Saturn turned his life around for good now, but hearing how you can fall off the cliff so easily is pretty scary. Glad the man is alive and getting well.

Was there only one Backlund/Muraco hour match? I'm almost certain that I've got 60-minute match with them on some crappy old comp tape I bought on Ebay a decade back.

Think they had one at the Cap Center in the same time frame, which is probably the one you have on vhs.

The Philly match is the one in circulation. It's solid, and a pretty good example of how old school workers filled 60 minutes.

The Cap Centre match is the blow off in that city for their first feud. Looks like in the first feud, the 2nd MSG, 2nd Cap Centre, and both Philly matches are out there. There also are silent clips from the Boston cage match that makes you weap when watching it: this looks like one of the Grails that wasn't shot, and you wish they ran the cage in Philly to blow off the feud there. Looks really awesome.

Randomness:

1. Was playing around in the "Matches" forum and stumbled across links to NMB from 2005. Good stuff there - glad you guys haven't taken those review threads down. It's good reading and always fun to read discussion of matches and shows from when it happened.

The specific discussion I started reading - and will finish later - is a massive one on JBL/Eddie from JD 04.

2. My brother and I were watching the original HIGHLANDER movie the other night, and it opens with that MSG match between the Freebirds and ?? One guy was Samoan, I think. Anyway, my brother is not a rasslin fan. He said, "Wow, that's back when they let you wrestle just for being big." He was referring to the physiques on guys like Terry and PS, as compared to someone like Cena today.

Interesting.

PS - Damn, LOSS was so passionate.

Eddy Guerrero v Dean Malenko - 2/3 falls - 08/26/95 (ECW)

Man, FUCK this crowd! Since when is it a sign of "respect" for a bunch of self-important fans to spend the duration of a match putting themselves over and finding ways to break kayfabe? Reactions like the ones here essentially make ECW a useless exercise overall, because the mutants refused to buy into anything the company was selling, they were dead set against suspending their disbelief, and their top priority seems to be coming up with creative chants, with swear words whenever possible, instead of letting the workers tell a story, reacting to it and *then* doing their pretentious applause, probably not even having a clue why they're clapping in the first place.

.....

Our little "smark" subculture, or whatever you want to call it, is a novelty. I think some of us really know what we're talking about and some of us don't have a clue. I think those of us that are truly wise realize how little we actually know, and even if it doesn't always come across when I'm expressing my views, I do try to keep that in mind. I can talk critically about a match here, and I can talk about how great a spot is, or how great a wrestler's selling is, or how they needed to improve something, but I would never disrespect two guys trying to tell me a story by reminding them every step of the way that they aren't fooling anyone, especially when watching a match in person. ECW had its positive influences, no doubt, but one of the negative influences that carried over to the WWF and WCW was that fans were no longer content to focus on the ring. ECW created a breed of self-satisfying jackasses that talk on their cell phones during the matches; or wave because they see themselves on the Jumbotron; or hold up signs in some type of vain attempt to get their 15 seconds of fame; or think they're being respectful when they meet a wrestler if they call him by his real name. Remember when companies used to darken the arena, to a point where the only light was shining brightly on the match? Me neither. We should all remember that what we do is simply that -- what *we* do -- and if you want to show a wrestler how much you appreciate him, give him the reaction he's seeking. It'll make the point more than anything else you could possibly do.

BTW, that match in Highlander was the Freebirds vs. Tonga Kid, Greg Gagne, and Jim Brunzell.

Nice, thx. I never really got a good enough look at anyone but Hayes (and of course BamBam, but he's easy to spot).

Did they bring those guys in for the movie? It's so weird to think of the Freebirds doing NYC in the 80's, but it sure seemed like a real show that the movie scenes were just filmed around. Really, it was just a couple of shots of Lambert in the crowd, I guess.

It was from a Pro Wrestling USA card at the Meadowlands. For the movie they pretended it was MSG.

Thanks to Kris, I think it was this show:

PWUSA @ East Rutherford, NJ – Meadowlands – April 19, 1985 (10,000)

Bobby Duncum d. Larry Sharpe

Buck Zumhofe d. Steve Regal

The Wild Samoans d. Steve O & Tom Zenk

Hacksaw Duggan d. Kendo Nagasaki

Jim Brunzell, Greg Gagne, & Tonga Kid fought The Fabulous Freebirds to a draw

Ugandan Death: Kamala d. Sgt. Slaughter

Bob Backlund d. Larry Zbyszko

AWA World Heavyweight Title: Rick Martel © d. King Tonga

AWA World Tag Titles: The Road Warriors © d. Curt & Larry Hennig

Back to NMB fun:

Will and Loss fighting about whether Savage/Steamboat at WM is awesome or just okay at best is some great reading.

Loss: "it's barely on the same planet as Savage/Warrior."

Will: "You're right. It isnt on the same planet. The Steamboat match is much better. "

funny I was reading this review a month or two ago and thinking how much Loss has mellowed since then! Ha!

Loss v Alvarez over Shawn./Angle is still my favorite though!
